Very well marked and maintained trail. Will definitely hike again. A few areas had very fresh tree falls on the trail but nothing overly large or blocking to much of the trail. Was some trash at a campsite but I packed it out.

Thinking back to June when REI had an event here to help repair the trail. There is so much damage from horses & just unkept areas. There are no blazes & in some areas it's hard to see where it connects. There are some arrows painted on the pavement to direct you in a couple of spots. There were just to many places that the entrance you had to duck down to walk through the next 2 miles or so. You had to walk out in the open, over paved areas & grassy fields all unmarked. there are a lot of hills & muddy area where you have to straddle each side of the dirt to walk through. All of these things made for not a good hike.

Not what you expect in Kansas.
Other worldly.

This is a great trail with many fun spots and lovely trees. It is not well marked. We had to use GPS with the app to find our way and that wasn't always correct. I wouldn't go if it has rained in the last three days as there are many muddy trails in shady areas. We went many days after a rain and we had to straddle some parts. There are many places along the route with water for refilling bottles.

Gets crowded with bikers and runners.
Fun little walk

Easy and very pleasant.

A friend and I hiked part of the orange trail and all of the red trail on a recent Saturday. Our whole hike was about 7 miles. Even though we hiked during the middle of the day, the trail was partly shaded and comfortable in temperature. This was my first visit to Shawnee Mission Park, and it is beautiful! The visitor's center staff is very friendly and provides free detailed maps. Like some other reviews mention, there are some large rocks and tree roots on the trail. Since we were hiking, this was not a problem, but it may be a challenge for a beginning biker. I can't wait to go back and try the other trails!

Fun outing. Not much of a hike really but I enjoyed it immensely. Unbelievable views and very cool to see the castle

So it's literally a .3 mile walk up a road to the high point in Kansas. A very unique summit on private land with a free little library, signs, and picnic table. I raced the sunset up there and was amazed with it's beauty. Glad I did it.

This place was not designed for hikers or bikers. This park was designed for Frisbee golfers. There are two Frisbee golf courses, upper and lower. You can walk around the upper one, but there’s no real path. And you’re really just walking around a big field. The lower course (below the “cliff”) is better for hiking. That one gets you into the trees and onto an actual path. That one’s actually pretty cool and fun to explore. But I’m only giving it three stars because even though the lower course is fun to hike around, none of it is very well marked and it wasn’t created with hiking in mind.

Just fun to say you did Kansas High point. Nice prairie views. A couple of nice metal artwork. Did it to break up the drive through Kansas.

My go-to trails in the area. rocky, rooty, and varied.

Agree with previous comments regarding how horse traffic has ruined the trails for runners and hikers. Very narrow paths and lots of uphill/downhill trench straddling due to muddy conditions. Only saw 3 others besides our group yesterday and no horses. If you tire, there isn’t any place to rest. I’ll be back, though when the weather is cooler.

Trail Condition:
A few muddy spots, and fallen trees

Issues:
Equestrians destroying the paths, not well marked trails during road crossings, damn connection trail is marked with No Trespassing sign.

Experience:
Overall it was a fun trail. Not as hard as most people make it sound but for Kansas its a good trail. My favorite section was the uphill grade on the west side of the dam.

Not digging all the rocks gardens, tons of roots and fallen trees on this trail.

Very cool area, different from surrounding areas

Did the whole 8+ mile hike. The trail is trashed by the horse traffic. I mean dung and destroyed sections of the trail. That's a pretty big deal considering that the width of the trail is tiny. On first time hiking I saw close to a dozen horse riders that made me to believe that this is not for human/dog traffic. Plus, no scenery what so ever and I'm never coming back.

Could be a fabulous trail for a good day hike, but horse traffic when the trail is wet has done a lot of damage. If it has rained in the past few days the trail is almost impassable with mud due to damage from horse traffic. Trail could also use some signage at several locations to keep hikers on course.

Trail itself makes for a decent short hike. Lots of people just let their dogs run through woods unwatched. Witnessed a couple dog fights both times I went.

Good for hiking, not the best for mountain biking due to the quantity of loose rocks

We walked the roads around the lake (the trails were pretty muddy). The hills were a good challenge and the scenery was peaceful!

the trail has gotten. little more challenging since I rode it a couple years ago. but, it was a great ride and I had lots of fun.

I love taking my dogs here to run and play! There are always a lot of four wheelers to watch out for. But it’s a great place to get away and walk or fish!

fun variety!

The castle was neat! The walking trails were alright. I wish the 2 large dogs there were on leashes, I had to wait until they were gone.

My husband and I hiked this on April 2. It was about 30* out, but the humidity made it feel so much colder!

This was a nice, flat walk that with nothing too remarkable to look at except for the dam.

Everything was drab and brown when we were there but I imagine it's more pleasant-looking at other times of the year.

Loved all of the paved and forest trails! There is also a really awesome dog park here too!

This is an easy trail that you can make as short as half a mile and as long as two miles, depending on which path you decide to take.

Well maintained and marked, but a few trees are down due to the recent insane wind. Lots of leaves right now, so I would recommend poles or a walking stick because they hide a lot of obstacles. All in all, this is a fun trail.
