Explore the most popular partially paved trails in Iowa with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

For an infrequent biker, this has been challenging for many years. I’ve done the entire trail only twice. Wish it could have continued into Missouri.

Great trail! Will definitely do it again. Wish it had route markings or maps at the forks - I get turned around easily.

Very scenic trail. Crushed limestone makes the trail easy on the body. Must-do for bikers is the Taco Ride on Thursday nights.

nice ride

I was passing through Dubuque and wanted a short hike. I drove up to the parking lot and it was a short beautiful walk on a paved walkway to the monument and overlook. I would recommend it for the elderly or small children to view the Mississippi. There were steps leading downhill for more trail but I didn't have time. it was a lovely spot.

Great trail! Paved with some spurs. My only complaint is there are no signs marking the trail for what is located where. Twice I've been on this trail and twice I've missed the "turn" to go back to the parking areas. I've never been on a trail this nice that has no signs (except for the 911 locate signs). There were bicyclists, skateboarders, people with dogs and people pushing baby strollers on this trail.

This is one of my favorite rides. There’s two spots you need to detour around, LaPort City’s bridge has been closed for years and has no signs of being fixed and just west of Center Point they are actively installing a bridge over a creek. The middle third of the trail is crushed limestone but the rest is paved. It’s well maintained and has stops all along the trail. I never get tired of riding this trail, I always see lots of neat wildlife.

I really love this trail as it is very open to walking as well as biking and offers beautiful scenery along every mile you take.

I love this lake it's so beautiful

Great trail!! Easy riding on a paved fairly level path and beautiful scenery! The bridge is gorgeous and we liked all of the stops with historical information.

My favorite place to do my long runs! Friendly people. Lots of bicyclists. Well mannered users. There is a port-a-potty at the start and at mile 6. Not sure beyond that. Lots of benches to stop along the way. Love this place!

Just a really nice, easy ride. The half of the trail between Slater and Woodward is a better ride than Slater to Ankeny, and not just because of the bridge. It’s just more scenic and more beverage stops if you’re so inclined.

06/19/18 - I headed north from the Douglas Ave trail head and made it only about a quarter mile before the trail was impassable due to the high level of the river. It was fun while it lasted, though. I'll head back when it dries out some.

Love it did 6 miles

Little close to the highway for my liking.

It’s quiet minus the traffic nearby but loads of birds and a good distance with no real inclines/declines for need an even level path.

Well maintained grass trail that would be great to take pups out on. I made the mistake of wearing my gym shoes and wish I would have worn shoes that could get muddy. A few spots were rough but overall a flat and easy walk along the (dried up) river. This trail comes out at the highway so about 1/4 mile is paved cement. Your start and finish is at the campground, which is small and quiet. The Cardinal Flower trailhead, which is .8 miles is also at this trailhead. It too, is an ok grass path. I enjoyed this walk in the woods but probably wouldn’t make a special trip unless I was here to camp. Happy hiking, folks!

From the lower parking lot up to the monument is a fine climb through forest along the edge of steep hills. The trail is wide and easy to walk, so all the difficulty comes in the vertical climb. The worst parts have stairs.

The view at the top is spectacular, but there is a parking lot at the top so don't expect an isolated pinnacle. Two large families were there when I hiked up, so the beautiful view had a commotion next to it.

This is a nicely maintained, paved path along Muddy Creek connecting the Oakdale campus with Auburn Hills park. It's nice all year round, but in my opinion is most appealing in April and May when the wildflowers are blooming.
