Very pretty. The hike takes you north along Lake Michigan. The area seems very well managed for invasive plant removal. The trail connects to the trails in Illinois a State Beach for an extended hike. The southwest trail is a foot path through vegetation.

Beautiful vibe!!

Nice wide, well-groomed trails. Plenty of wildflowers, birds, and frogs. Lots of bicyclists since it's a bike trail.

Started out as a pretty cool place. Unfortunately, there was broken glass on several locations of the trails. It’s not worth a punctured tire or falling and landing on the glass.

Lots to look at. Not much shade .. I was dying on a 97 degree day but I would go back

The pups and I loved this hike. You can walk the perimeter or walk the trails. There’s some incline and decline, lots of wildlife, plenty of shade from the tall trees throughout. Also saw a pretty doe frolicking through the woods about 20 feet away. We will definitely have to come back and explore some more.

It was bit overgrown in places but it was a beautiful trail.

Trail has sandy parts and dirt/stone parts. Nice mix of sun and shade with benches located throughout for rest stops. A beautiful array of insects but surprisingly I didn't see or get bitten by a single mosquito. Nice variety of flowers in all areas. Public restrooms are located at both trailheads and there is access to the beach from Dunes trail. I loved both of these trails and will definitely be back!

Well maintained trail and horses but not to exciting. Took blue and yellow trail.

we walked along the beach here up as close as we could get to the power plant. the walk was nice but not a whole lot to see as far as nature goes.

nice dense woods with lots of Wildlife

We did the blue loop trail. Not great if you're trying to take an interesting hike.

Nice for biking, horseback riding or jogging.

Pretty dull and entirely exposed to the sun the entire loop except for a few small areas.

Would not hike it again.

Short trail, but really beautiful in July. Loads of wildflowers.

Sensational, Beautiful Lake County at it's absolute best. Like the single track path along the dead river,South of the park's trail bend, and out to Lake Michigan!
( Great old park now in "dis-repair" due to the State's budget crisis. Don't need the stupid DNR's annual "burns" which kill all the small wildlife and baby oak trees

Watch out for road apples!

About a 1.5 mile hike to the north entrance from the truck stop. Followed the river around the east side of the lake. Over cast breezy afternoon. Saw horse tracks a me cyclers and a few joggers. Nice families and friendly fishermen.
I saw a couple of families of geese with their new young.
On the northwest side of the lake were two beaver lodges which were occupied.
Overall it was a nice nearby hike that ended up being about eight miles round trip. Quite a few more in the area I'd like to try next.

Not pet friendly, Beach Is OK kinda dirty and always packed on weekends, but all in all fun with friends! :)

Trails were in great condition and picnic shelter areas were perfect for our afternoon away. We were hoping to explore more but brought our dog and found most of the park was not pet friendly.

I did the Blue Loop on my bike and really liked it. I will be going back to try another trail.

The trail is nice. There aren't really any hills, for Illinois that is. Most of the trail has horse prints so watch your feet when running, walking would be easy. This will probably go away after a good rain. I ran the entire trail and once the leaves come in it will be awesome. I will be going back.

We hiked this trail on the only sunny day in a week of floods and more rain in IL. The trail was the highlight of our stay at IL Beach State Park Resort - to which I'd give only 2 stars. Here's what we enjoyed:

Sounds of tree frogs simmering,
Grunting geese are glimmering.
KEV in, song of chickadee
AB by too, we all agree.

Breezes sigh through dead oak leaves;
Pussy willows bas-reliefs.
River flows like crackled glass;
Redwings call from prairie grass.

Kildeer court in strip-ed view;
Muskrat skims the river slough.
Kinglets flash their ruby crown
For the female looking down.

White tail deer beside the trail,
Harvesting the dunes and swale.
All these gifts, a sunny day
Hiking offers such display!

I hiked this trail in light rain with a bit of hail. It is an easy, lovely hike through mixed habitat. You follow the Dead River for the first half of the hike. There are great views on this leg. At the midway point you can split onto the Dunes Trail northbound or head out to the coast of Lake Michigan eastbound , or continue on the Dead River Loop westbound which will bring you back to the parking lot. There is a lot of downed timber due to recent storm activity and the old growth trees are perfect for woodpeckers, owls, and other cavity nesters.
