Explore the most popular rails trails trails in Illinois with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Off the beaten path but a nice change for those used to the relatively flat trails of Illinois'. Trail is not kept up very well and had tall vegetative growth when we hiked it. Very cool Tunnel entrance at the end and other abandoned railroad remnants can be found along the way.

Great bicycle patch

New trail for me, surprised to see a paved trail here, easy to navigate, though paved its run down and very bumpy due to cracks. River smells , but I would ride it again. Straight as the crow flys. Has mile markers on the trail, climbing the bridge at Route 83 is cool ... Down side is you have to turn around and ride same trail back .

Excellent trail! Beautiful scenery and lots of shade. Some inclines but not too much, pretty smooth and easy ride.

A well maintained trail....a good cardio workout because of the length out and back on a mountain bike. No technical riding, though, just straight pedaling. Nice facilities along the way.

Trail is closed -

Very flat trail that parallels the Hennepin Canal.

It is paved all the way, but since the road is not maintained very well, grass has overtaken the road in many places and in places there are potholes. No tree roots though!

I ran this trail from Sheffield to Colona mainly at night. I imagine this would be a beautiful run during the day. Depending upon the time of day there would be very little shade since trees only are on one side of the trail.

It was an awesome hike. Short, but fun nonetheless.

The trail is a hilly, mowed path that leads to an old railroad tunnel. A nice, short walk, of just over one mile will take you to the tunnel. There are side paths, and no signs along the way, but if you keep taking the most prominent path, you should be fine.

I live close to the start of the trail in Sterling. It's flat as a pancake, but goes on for miles and miles. If you want a secluded area to be by yourself, head south out of rock falls and follow the canal. Bring plenty of water in the summer, as there are no water stops along the way. Along the canal in Rock Falls, there is some dirt single track to run on above it on the west side for around 4-5 miles worth.

The Hennepin 100 is ran on this trail as well. 100 mile point to point race annually in October, with a 50 mile, 50k option as well!

As a moderately in shape person I would definitely rate this trail easy. The tunnel is very cool but you can't explore it at all. The trail is very lush and green and would be perfect for younger and older active people. We did it in under an hour.

A decent hike. Only a couple of spots with the elevation change I was hoping to find. The rest was relatively flat on old railroad trails. Nice for a short hike. The bugs were feasting, even with spray.

Great trail! So much along it! If you walk the whole thing you can get a badge from the county!

Great family trip.
Spooky tunnel at the end!! Go a little deeper for extra adrenaline rush.
Be sure and follow the old railroad track to the dead end on the round trip so that you can take an off road, steep, short cut back to the car!!

We were drawn to this trail because the line ends at an old abandoned railway tunnel - sounds spooky! It was phenomenal! Main trail is easy to follow - no markers but highly used. Plenty of fun game trails to explore the area along with some nice views. Lots of wildlife. Several great steep hills to go up and down along the route. The best were a few old ruins and foundations from when the railway was still running. Although it's a short main trail, there is a lot to see and explore along the way. We were lucky to have a warm winter day so the foliage was thin and there weren't any bugs. I imagine it gets very overgrown in the summer months though. Oh, and the tunnel at the turn-back point did not disappoint! Highly recommended for the seasoned adventure-enthusiast with an afternoon to spend in the hills below Galena.

Ten mile run. Started in Frankfort, went towards Joliet.

I was a little disappointed. We started in Rock Falls and went south, the further we went the more grown over it got and we only could go about 7.5 miles before the path was covered with canal water and was not passable. In the description it said it was used by road bikes, not likely!

My family and I ride this trail often and have been for many years. It is very scenic and offers a lot of shade through the forest preserve if you go on a hot day. You do have to cross several streets, but overall, not too bad.

This starts in my back yard! Easy gravel path for walking, running, biking, kayaking, birding... You name it, you can pretty much do it all.

For biking I give it a lower rating as it's just too boring. But if you want to go for leasurely bike with someone new to biking that is scared of road and trail it's ok. But it's closer to road then mountain biking.

It's a great place for long runs. I have prepared for marathons and many triathalons on this trail. I prefer starting at Alta and going out so that it's all packed limestone instead of paved and easier on the knees and feet. It's fairly flat and straight so it's not technical.

Terrific asset for the south suburbs! I've biked most of the trail at various times and use a local segment twice a week for regular bike rides. Well maintained and safe, at least from Joliet to Matteson.
