Best known for its 100-foot bluff and demanding stair workout. Constructed in 1930 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, 125 limestone stairs lead to the top of a former toboggan run at Swallow Cliff North (the runs were closed in 2004). Some stair climbers build pebble piles at the top of the stairs to keep track of their trips up and down. The Cook County Forest Preserve recognized its increasing popularity, however, and decided to add to it with 168 more stairs. Now, the bluff has 293 steps, and because it is slightly west of the other set, there are more landings to rest. During the winter, the bluff still serves as an active sledding hill. The stairs are cleared and salted.Show more

If you're looking for an easy short trail, this is the one. You'll feel engulfed by nature, forgetting there is civilization right around the corner. It is best to go later in the evening to catch an array of fireflies. The trail itself is quite short, but overlaps with longer trails (in case you want to hop right over to a longer one). There are maps along the way, so no worries of getting lost. Show more
