The actual trail begins near the boat ramp and is only 1/2 mile out and back. Spectacular view of the river.

We missed a few blazes and had to back track a bit, but all-in-all It was a really great hike,.. up until about the 11mi mark anyway. After that it was pretty tortuous. There were so many pines across the trail that it was just easier to make a new trail around most of them. Can you say briar patch? In many places it was a whole grove of trees on the ground. The trail was also cover with a tall grass that made it impossible to see where we were putting our feet. Once we finally got out of that mess and reached Bassett Rd we were greeted with a very official looking notice informing us that the next section was closed for logging. Yippy. We ended up road hiking it the rest of the way back to our vehicle. All of that aside, we still had a good time and I'm hopeful that the next section is in a little better condition, when we come back in a couple of weeks...

Despite the trail conditions, I’m thankful it is so close to home and that it even exists.

I plan on doing a section hike of the AT in about 18 months. I would like to do the River to River all the way through to prepare. It's close to where I live. I wouldn't mind others tagging along.

First of all, this map is inaccurate. It's about 160 miles. You can find updated maps at rivertorivertrail.net. Pushed myself and hiked the entirety plus a few side trips in 6 days. Waking up on a misty morning in Panther's Den with no one else around was the highlight. Hiked it in late March, so the weather was perfect and I enjoyed and nice cigar before heading down to the Mississippi. I'd definitely do it again, but there are many more trails to hike.

From what I can see on the map here, it definitely doesn't follow the trail markers. Mainly after Goreville to the Mississippi. Im sure there is a more accurate map somewhere else to be found.

Would love to do this trail from start to finish or possibly in two sections. Would anyone be interesting informing a group and going?

Short walk from the campground to an overlook.

Extremely short trail, but the view is great up top on Tower Rock. Steep walk up, but not difficult beyond that.

Me and my girlfriend are trying to plan a 4 day 3 over night possible trip and I would like to get about 20 to 30 miles with Garden of the Gods included. Does anyone have a good trail to go with?

Once we found the trail (at the boat ramp as stated by Brenda L), the views at the top were great. The trail shown on this app is the gravel road around the campground and boat ramp. From the boat ramp to the top of Tower Rock and back is .5 miles.

Nice secluded camping with view of the Ohio River. However, the trail map is incorrect. The trail does start at the boat ramp, but ascends up into the forest with scenic views.

anyone planning on hiking the entire trail in one trip? I really would like to do it but I don't really want to go at it by myself, and if anyone has already done it I'll take some pointers on where I can resupply on food and whatnot along the way. thanks!

started in e town, stoped hiking in eddyville. this part of the trail hiked has a lot of forks that are not marked what way to go. trail has been moved around a lot, but they never took down the old blazes. wasted about 10 miles following false trails, lusk creek is the worst part.

It's a nice place to camp. Very quite and secluded. Right next to the river so that's a perk!

Decent hike, a lot of ups and downs, steep in some places. Completely overgrown and not taken care of. It's like a forgotten gem. Wonderful views of the Ohio River. The trail starts by the boat launch. Saw a very large bird and have no idea what it was. It appeared to have a 5 foot wing span. Was the largest bird I have ever seen my entire life.

Great place in Southern IL to explore. Vast areas of different ecology's with many opportunities for wildlife viewing. Trail can be wide and paved with gravel in places down to barely a single wide dirt path with encroaching greenery on the sides. I hiked this trail every season and would say that late winter/early spring is best for the views before all the leaves grow back. I recommend planning extra time along the trail to explore the numerous side trails to different scenic areas.

Fun first short thru hike for me. Not well blazed in many places and confusing to navigate, but rugged and rewarding.

It was definitely fun, however it's easy to get lost. There are many other trails that branch off of the River to River. The trail isn't always well marked.
