Speed hiked on the west (grassy) side of Lake Shore Drive (not the concrete/beach side), between 67th Jeffrey (Jackson Park) and 47th Street (Hyde Park), which covers part of the Bobolink Meadow Trail. This side is less traveled, with relatively no foot paths alongside the Drive. 70% of my workout was on grass and not on any trail. Total mileage was 6.6 mi @ 15:25/mi pace on flat terrain. It was a clear, sunny day. This side gives an all-encompassing, fuller perspective of lakefront beaches, parking, Jackson Park harbors and lagoons, golf courses, driving range, exercise park for dogs, tennis courts, and the museum — not noticed in detail when driving in either direction. All Jackson Park attractions are accessible by foot within a 1.5-mile radius after parking. Beyond Jackson Park (north of 57th Street, ending at 47th Street) is a detailed view of local lodging and businesses along the Drive — this is the lakefront side of Hyde Park. Lodging is available less than a mile from the museum and Jackson Park. Hyde Park has it’s own attractions on the lakefront, and further inland, all within walking distance from lodging. This turned out to be an appreciable speed hike in a way that I had not expected. It was a great outing. If only there were foot trails it would be near perfect (4 out of 5 stars). No photos.

Very tranquil and rustic trail. Especially good south of Irving Park

Main trail nice and dry, side trails still a little muddy and some dead ends, coming back after a few warm and dry days.

Good paved path with fewer bikes on weekdays. . too many bikes on weekends, and with poor trail manners. Great example of Cook County’s accumulation of poor forest practices with loads of fallen trees .

Dirt trail, sparingly marked Yellow trail with good views of the river. Many trees down along trail, but that is the trademark of Cook County “maintained” Forest Preserves. Between Lawrence and Irving Park, O’Hare flight path, so noisy, even with Covid19 reduced traffic. Path seemingly more maintained and quieter south of Irving Park. Robinson Woods entrance closed, so access via Schiller Woods off of Irving Park.

Much of the inner trail was muddy and washed out, but it was still good - in a totally unmaintained way.

Walked from Sunset Bridge Meadow to Dean Nature Sanctuary. The AllTrails trail north of Thatcher Woods Pavilion leads off-trail across the forest. Would be better to use one of the existing trails on east or west side. There is no entrance to Forest Home Cemetery by Harvard/Taylor St., need to use main entrance by Polk St. Cemetery gates close at 4 pm. There is no Roosevelt Rd crossing at 1st Ave. nor 1st Ave crossing at Cermak or 1st Ave Cutoff and rail tracks south of Miller Meadow. Certain sections of trail are for foot traffic only - horses and bicycles prohibited.

One of Chicago’s great boulevard parks. The view of the prairie style boathouse from the island is sublime in the evening. The park district has done a great job over the past several years w planting trees and creating areas for native plants and birds and butterflies. Great bronze buffaloes guard a formal garden. Terrific views of the city from the sledding hill. My only complaint is they don’t run the water pump that powers the recirculating Prarie river all the time causing a drop in water quality. But over all a great trail in the heart of the city!
