Channahon, Illinois Map

Nice, easy walk. We saw a couple of other people, but otherwise pretty much had the trail to ourselves. I liked that it went through prairie, woods, and along the river - plenty to look at. Lots of dragonflies and butterflies. I'd definitely go back, and possibly bring a bike. Trail was wide, paved, and well-signed.

I travel the world. This was a great experience. Boundless Spirit International will share with followers for others to enjoy. Great bike and walking trails. Drop ins for Kayaks. Information about the trails are posted. Wonderful place to have a picnic.

my go to trail right in my backyard.maintained by the state which is haphazard at times.good amount of parking and newer outhouses at entrance.

Walking with brother Jim. Very nice day April in Joliet. Saw a few birds like herons and ducks. No alligators! Although I thought I heard one. LOL

this is a great trail along the I&M canal, uneven hilly ground, in the woods, quiet and peaceful. good for birdwatching and wildlife enthusiasts.

I love this area as it's very peaceful and quiet, most times it's not heavily trafficked. good chance to see herons, cranes and cormorants as well as ducks and geese. trails are flat and wide and easily traveled. excellent for families to have a picnic along the river. just remember to pick up your trash and don't litter!!!

Watch out for the rattlesnakes! Saw one in August near Utica.

Nice trail to bike or walk. Most of it is gravel and flat..... very easy walk..... travels along canal so you will usual see some wildlife. Much of it is full sun.

Nice quick trail in the woods with a river over look..... very small forest preserve but nice place to get out for a little while. Canoe access on the I&M canal and shore access for fishing on the river. Some parts with steeper elevation but overall very easy hike.

About tennis ball spiders crawling all over you and your stuff so you cannot stay still for too long. There were also millions of them.

Did the 30 miles from Channahon to Ottawa. It was a good, well maintained trail. Lots of spring flowers, birds and camping spots from Channahon to Seneca. Be aware of the detour in Morris! From Seneca to Ottawa however the canal is dried up, the scenery doesn't really change and it is hard to find a spot for your tent at night. Luckily the trail goes next to a Caseys in Seneca because there is no water location from Morris until Ottawa. The trail from Seneca to Ottawa would be much better for biking. Overall is was what we expected and gave a good experience for our first overnight hike.

Its a nice place, lots to explore but not really as hard as some others get.

This place is amazing! highly reccomend!

Nice trail to put in some miles, but not a lot of scenery. We saw a few water birds. Flat and a lot of sun.

Beautiful day! Trails were in dry and in good condition. Moderately challenging. We saw a baby deer, but couldn't see mom!

I live in Channahon, I hike to this location several times per week. I don't know why it's rated HARD. Unless you have joint problems its pretty easy. It's a peaceful and usually quiet area where I've seen tons of wildlife, Blue Herons, Egrets, Hawks of all kinds, songbirds, deer and a lot of different water snakes

Muddy. peaceful awesome....find the bench.

We went on a chilly day in November. It was beautiful and so peaceful. We saw 2 huge herons in the water.

Excellent day of hiking. Did the trails listed first. Natural trails, great taste of nature. Then i did the I&M Canal Trail down to the north McKinley woods preserve. Excellent place, paved trails, prairie restoration on the island, but also trails into the woods a bit. Lady in the nature center filled my water bottle with her cold bottled water back in the office. That's an automatic 5 stars :). Excellent for bird watching, hiking, biking. I recommend!

Don't forget your bug spray! My only complaint about this trail is there is a lot of overgrowth in some areas so it can be slightly difficult find the trail. There are no trail markers so you more or less walk til you come out of the woods. I ended up following a trail but it didnt lead me anywhere near my car and I had to walk the road to get back there. Plusses are lots of wildlife, and nice rough terrain.

I actually started at Brandon road in Rockdale, just outside Joliet. Trail is 47 miles to Ottawa. Excellent hike on a well maintained trail. There is a major detour in Morris due to a washout that has the trail closed. Requires hiking on city streets/sidewalks to get to Gebhard Woods state park where you pick the trail back up. The section just outside Channahon along the Dupage river is especially nice as it almost feels like walking on an island with the river on one side and the canal on the other. Once you approach Morris the canal is mostly dry as you head west. I will certainly return to finish the remaining 15.7 miles to Peru.

Great trail with great company ♡

This is our go to place. I really enjoy the woods even saw deer this last time. With all the rain the mosquitoes are crazy right now. Make sure you bring spray.

Maintained very well. I was looking for a fairly easy walk to get in shape for the summer, this fit the bill. Weather was perfect. If you need to you can add to the distance by starting or finishing further along the I & M Canal pathway. Everything was very green!

NIce easy trail, well-maintained. Plenty of parking and a good look at Dresden from the river. Plenty of birds along the way.

Nice trail that connects to the I+M Trail Network. I was surprised to see some decent short single track and double track.

Very easy trail next to I and M canal. Lots of wildlife, pretty outdoor scenery.

I love this park, probably because I have visited it many times over the years. There are some nice trails, woodsy, hilly. You are right by the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Illinois River. You often see deer. There are the remnants (mainly foundations) from an old CCC camp. there is also a lovely, small shelter.

Better for biking, I would say. It goes from a lovely park in Channahon to McKinley Woods State Park, which is a really nice little park with a few hills and trails and some CCC remnants. Anyway, the I&M Canal Trail goes all the way from the Chicago area down to LaSalle Peru. This particular stretch is often the only thing between the canal and the Illinois River. It's a nice ride.
