Nice, quick trail. You’re pretty much exposed to the sun the entire trail though. Great for summer evening rides and nice views

Doing this trail in one day makes for a long day. We started from the black canyon side. The first few miles are easy and beautiful (The whole trail is beautiful!) There are so many water crossings that it would have taken all day to keep changing shoes back and forth to water shoes each time. Just wear some wool hiking socks, good shoes, and forge through.
After about 4 miles you come to the beaver damn. This is about the last water before you make the climb, so fill up your bottles before you turn up the canyon to the left. The climb from the Black Canyon side is easier than climbing the burns side. You will climb for a few miles till you get to the trail signs. Once you see the signs, the climb is over. Turn left and drop steeply into Burns Creek. (I would not want to climb this side). Once you get to the bottom (a mile or so) you will see more trail signs. Turn left here and follow the creek out. Lots of overgrown vegetation and creek crossings. It was SO lush and beautiful, I didn't know Idaho had such lush scenery. My 9yr old pretended he was in the amazon rain forest.
If you want to make the loop, and you have a group, park a vehicle at each trail head and save the over two mile road walk back to black canyon trail head.
Next time I will just do Burns creek in and out and skip the climb.

This trail seems to be an old forest road. Pretty easy quick little hike. Lots of wild flowers right now.

Great climb and fast down, overall great cardio!! Best part, no else around!!

Fairly even. Nice and pretty. Had kids with us.

This was a good beginner hike. It’s more an ATV trail than a hiking trail. Very little of the trail is shaded and it’s not marked very well where to go from the parking lot (go behind the gates). Luckily my gps worked fine the whole time. When you get to the Y, go left. There’s a giant cell tower. Go past the cell tower and the view is amazing! Plus you’ll have perfect cell service lol

When you get to the top, make sure you go straight for about another half a mile. The view there was 10 times more gorgeous.

Beautiful view, just thought there would be a spring, but nope!

Well marked and completely clear. Beautiful view of snake river. A great fall hike.

First 2.5 miles are easy switchbacks through sage brush. The trail then joins up with an ATV trail, and gets a little steeper and rockier.

A quick uphill walk or ride to the high point of Jefferson county. Views at the top are OK.

Not well-marked. We had to guess that we were on the right trail.

Nice hike through Kelly Canyon Ski area. The trail follows a very dusty road up and around the ski area. Go early to avoid the ATV and dirt bikers that were making their way to the trail by late morning.

Watch for snakes. Friends of mine scared a good sized rattlesnake off the trail right at the bottom

Just did an overnighter on this trail. It has lots of trail crossings. I think 19 crossings is about right, so bring some water shoes. If you want to have an easier hike start out on the black canyon side. It is not such a hard up. I did the burns creek to start out, and it gets really rutted and steep. Not too many places to camp until you get to the black canyon trail junction. The trail is in some serious need of work. Super washed out, vegetation above your head. No ticks though, and not too many mosquitos. All around good hike, but I would caution dirt bikes it has a ton of narrow wash out. Solitude rating 10/10. Nobody was on this trail on a middle of July weekend. Happy trailing!

Honestly probably would've been a great hike but it's not clear where it starts so we mistakenly just started on a path and 10 miles later, near death, got picked up by a nice couple who took us back to our car.

It was beautiful this time of year with all the wild flowers. Perfect length for children. I expected a hiking trail though and it was an old road the whole way.

I am giving this 5 stars for the 2.5 mile portion we went in with our kids. If you like zero traffic, water crossings, beautiful views and a beautiful drive to the trail, you'll like this. I can't wait to do the whole loop. One of our new favorite hikes for sure!

For being as close as it is to Rexburg and Idaho Falls, this is a great hike that gives you a pretty view here and there. There is quite a bit of ATV track. And this is a great trail to mountain bike.

Good quick afternoon trail

This hike surprised me as the name left me thinking it would be dull. There are definitely better hikes but for those in the Rexburg/Idaho Falls area looking for a decent and challenging hike this is it. The first half of the hike is uphill (first in sage brush, and then in a beautiful grove of trees) to the top of Kelly Mountain about 5.5 miles in. There are great views of the Snake River plain. I would categorize it as moderate and there are some steep switch back sections as you climb out of the sage brush to the tree line. It is a multi-use trail but I only ran into one mountain biker and two hikers. I did not see any wildlife unless you count a small dog. I was surprisingly pleased with the sage brush, views of the snake river, and the beautiful grove of trees at the top. I would suggest making it an 11 miler and going all the way to the top of Kelly Mountain.

Fun moderate hike! Felt like a work out but didn't feel like I was going to die. It's sandy and I slipped a few times - wear shoes with good traction. Pretty!

Nice trail for hiking and biking. I like that it isn't too crowded. It is windy for most of the ascent.
