There is no signage for Wind River Trail because this trail is actually Centennial Trail #88 When you cross the bridge you will see a trail sign to the left with Centennial Trail #88 and Bullion Trail, and Florence keep left and follow that trail The trail is easy to follow but overgrown in spots so wear long pants and be prepared to be bombarded by small grasshoppers. As mentioned this trail is exposed until the tree line and the best time would be Spring, Fall or very early in the morning as it gets very hot. My puppy and I only did 2.5 miles in ( 5 miles out and back) as we just ran out of time. Many switchbacks with the ascent The view of the Salmon River and surrounding mountains of the Gospel Hump Wilderness is breathtaking beautiful. This is pristine, rugged wilderness. The drive to the trail is just as beautiful Epic country Like our adventures on Facebook, “ Apackof2 for the Road” Follow us on Twitter, “apackof2fortherd”

There seems to be some confusion on this hike as there are two trails that start at the foot of the bridge that crosses the Salmon River. One trail (the one shown on this map) branches left and immediately charges up the mountains away from Wind River. It is in fact the Idaho 88 Centennial trail going to Florence. You will only see Wind River at the beginning and will quickly lose sight of it as you progress to the west. The other trail (Forest Trail 312) goes to the right, and works up the Wind RIver valley before rising above it. Of the two I would consider 312 to be far more scenic and interesting.

This a beautiful, rugged and a bit confusing trail at the beginning. The trail turns into a road and you wonder where it went? Keep following the road past the old livestock corral with the small barn Also there are several gates and some blowdown Trail is muddy in some parts Beautiful mountain lake with clear water Hunters are allowed here and I met several elk hunters so it might be a good idea to wear some orange I found it to be a good workout and longer than 8 miles Like our adventures on Facebook, “Apackof2 for the Road” Follow us on Twitter, “apackof2fortherd”

One of my favorite hikes! Sheep Lake is full of camping spots. Gorgeous views of He Devil and She Devil. Took this shortcut and made it to the lake in about an hour and 15 minutes. Camped for two nights, had the second night to ourselves in August. Hiked around to the other side and scrambled up to the top of He Devil. Great area!

Beautiful trail, single track mostly in good condition but my puppy and I only did about 1/3 of it for several reasons 1. We got there late 2. Looked like a storm rolling in 3. Pretty fresh bear scat on trail So since I don’t tug on Superman’s cape or spit into the wind, we turned back I am hoping to get up there again before we leave the area. So when I read the other reviews of how steep and in some spots technical this trail is, I figured maybe they were exaggerating... they are not. It says “moderate” because of the length, but probably should be labeled “hard” due to the exposure in some places. We went on a cold, foggy, and rainy day so footing was a bit precarious at times. Couldn’t see much thanks to the fog, but I hear it’s beautiful lol!

Beautiful trail, decently long sections of scrambling though. Wouldn't recommend it for dogs.

Look for Rd 316 about 2 miles before the turn to Burgdorf hot springs. The road to the trail head is rocky and not suitable for passenger cars. The hike though was beautiful. No trail signs either, but it was a popular trail. The lake is very pretty, but the fishing was disappointing.

It is moderately difficult at most. Not bad even with a fairly heavy pack for camping. I did it mid-week and didn’t see another hiker even though there were lots of cars at the trailhead (they must’ve been on the Grass Mountain Lakes trail). Not a lot of shade so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. I was also glad to have mosquito repellent. There is a very nice camp site by the lake. Al coyote started howling from across the lake in the evening after I got camp set up. Lots of fish hitting the surface but I had a spinning rod along (barbless jigs) but you really need a fly rod and flies.

Quick way to get into sheep lake... hard to find the beginning of the trail since it’s not marked you have to kind of walk through a campsite, head for the saddle & once you go up the mountain over looking mirror lake, you (most likely) are going lose the trail it’ll be to the right once you get to the top of this saddle you’ll head down what looks like it’s not a trail this part is pretty sketchy since you’re so close to the edge many times but once you hit sheep lake it’s all worth it! Just remember two saddles & you should be good! Happy hiking! :)

We did one half of this loop. Started at Corduroy campground and rode 4 wheelers down the French Creek grade. Beautiful drive. good road, you could easily take a truck down it. We couldn't find out if the Carey Creek grade was open. Found out later it is it's just a little rougher. Camped overnight a few miles downstream from French Creek at "Hot Pear" camp. Tried fishing the river with no luck.

Beautiful but steep climb up Goat Trail Pass from Seven Devils Campground summits with amazing views of Mirror Lake below Tower of Babel. The initial decent into Sheep Lake is a bit of a scramble then it side-hills nicely for a little while. There is a scree patch as you finally drop into Sheep Lake that I would recommend trekking poles on but if not just take it slow. BRING BUG SPRAY to Sheep Lake, especially if you plan on camping.

Enjoyable and challenging out-and-back. According to my GPS, it's about 9 miles each way, or 18 if you do it all in one day. The first 3.5 miles are completely exposed to the sun; a forest fire turned all the trees into bleached and charred skeletons in that section. The rest of the hike is very nice, though.

Started from the parking lot and took the loop counter clockwise to shelf lake. The route in was 7.5 miles and took us almost 3 hours, gaining and losing 1700 feet. The way back was significantly more difficult but shelf lake was worth it as we had it nearly to ourselves and caught more Cutthroat than we could count. An alternative way out would be to hike ~2ish miles to Sheep Lake and take the Goat Trail out.
