One of my favorite places to hike and backpack!!!!!

The last mile was really steep but the lake was well worth it.

Its takes anywhere from 4 to 5 hours with breaks to complete. its absolutely beautiful went early October there was light snow but nothing unbearable.

lots of good fishing at Louie lake!

Moderately difficult. We went clockwise around the loop, and the elevation gain is more gradual that way. The only issue with the trail we ran across was that the turn off to complete the loop is not marked well, so we had to turn around and double back to find the right turn. Take lots of water and have fun!

The views are amazing and the beach camping is all you would want. It needs to be emphasized how difficult the first stretch can be if you are backpacking. There is a lot of steep elevation gain before the trail briefly levels out into a meadow. Then there is some more uphill before dropping down to the lake. Enjoy!

Did the Boulder / lake Louie trail today with my husband. Bring plenty of water as once you're past Boulder Lake, very few water spots/shade. Beautiful hike but dry. Loved Lake Louie!

Great trail! Did it going clockwise. Only draw back is the dusty exit along an old jeep trail from Louis Lake. Lots of great views and wildflowers still out!

Lots of variation in this hike. Approaching the edge of the lake from below (the North East leg) was a unique experience. Lots of beautiful meadows with wildflowers in mid-Aug. The last 1/3 of the hike (SW portion of the loop) is an uneventful walk on fire roads. Keep an eye out for direction arrows or you can miss your turn.

A beautifully strenuous hike up but well worth the effort. While ascending you will plateau two times and crest mountain ridges three times. If you're hiking with dogs access to water Will be after your first crest just a little over a mile up. Once you reach the lake,
The immediate campsites are very nice but used heavily, if you hike around the west side of the lake to the northside you will find more campsites and solitude. Enjoy.

Great hike. First 45-60 minutes is a bit tough but lots of flat areas after that. The lake is beautiful. Hardly saw anyone and pretty much had the place to ourselves.

One of the most beautiful trails I've hiked in Idaho. Meadows of wildflowers -- lupine, fireweed, Indian paintbrush, sulfur buckwheat, penstemon, strawflowers, wild orchids and other things I don't know the name of. Lakes on the loop are crystal clear and the trail borders them for wonderful views. The loop took us 3.5 hours with a foot soak at Boulder Lake and a lunch break. Be sure to use the record feature on this app; it saved us from potentially going way off course. The trails are more or less unmarked and it would be very easy to get lost without the tracker and a fully-charged phone.

Just returned from Idaho and wanted to share that this trail was beautiful and challenging. But only challenging because once you get to the lake, there is no sign to indicate where the trail continues, simply cairns showing the way. Well, we totally missed it. And as a result, hiked 17 miles instead of 7. Heads up to everyone--- we are experienced hikers and this happened to us. So, look for the rocks, not the sign. Even with the suffering, great trail!

Go early in the year to experience the runoff pools around the dam at the end of the trail. Felt tropical! Good for dogs and kids.

Hiked 7-14 thru 7-16 and camped at the head of the lake. Snow is all clear, some flat areas are still wet/muddy. Lake is high this year, likely that the sandy beach will be water covered until next year.

Great hike, moderately strenuous just due to the short nature. It is uphill both ways, just like like my grandpa's walk to school. Totally worth either a day hike or an overnight.

Spouse and I hiked to Box Lake Saturday morning (7/1/17). Description rates it as "strenuous" but we felt it was somewhere between moderate to strenuous. 1st hour is on the steep side but the rest isn't too bad at all. Ran into snow (approx. 2-3 feet) in the saddle at 7,300 feet or so, but easily made our way to the lake overlook. Trail before snow is in good shape (wet in spots) and the 3 creek crossings are very manageable. Total time with a 20 minute rest/snack stop was 4 hrs and 15 minutes. All in all a great hike with beautiful wild flowers and views. Enjoy!

Beautiful! Hard hike but worth it.

Still a ton of snow on the north side of the lake. Be prepared for trekking over large snow mounds. The trail gets covered occasionally. Snow melt made for a lot of standing and running water. Chacos or Keens highly recommended. Beautiful lake and great backpacking trip.

Amazing views!

The 9.1 miles must be for an ATV trail. The hiking route is 1.4 miles and about 800 vertical. Had to cross Boulder Creek on a log to get started, and then hiking on an ATV trail for much of the way, but no traffic today. Lake is reminiscent of Sawtooth Lake, very pretty.

Great hike. We were pressed for time, so we just did a 3.9 mile or and back to Boulder Lake. It was beautiful. Lots and lots of water flowing out of the lake this time of year, and there were some bugs, but not too bad.

Too much snow at the top to finish the loop but worth the trip up just to see the lake. wIt's still a bit frozen over and has snow on top. Very beautiful! The trail was a little hard to stay on at times with a few fallen trees covering the trail and it was at times unclear where the trail was--but we managed. We saw a total of 4 people today and it was lucky we ran into them at the end of the trail because we wouldn't have realized we needed to climb up over some rocks to actually get to the lake so it was nice that they let is know that. We did this with a baby and it was only at the end of the trek to get to the lake that was a bit difficult for us. Definitely recommend!

Beautiful Hike. Made a day trip up from Boise early in the morning to check it out. Still has a good amount of snow (seeing as we had a ton this year) at the lake so you couldn't get around to finish the loop so we just did an up and back. Snow was melting decently near the streams so be careful to not fall through. Give it a few weeks to melt and it will be much easier to get to the lake. Cool hike for our first time and only getting about half way through it.

Not too rough, just a little rugged. Great view. Watch for hazard trees.

This was a fun and pretty easy hike! Our 5 year old made it the whole way up and back without any issues. The lake is beautiful and the hike has a lot of beautiful scenery along the way as well. I would highly recommend it for a quick day hike!
