Explore the most popular birding trails near Ketchum with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

This is a lovely hike! We did it in late-July and there were still loads of wildflowers blooming. There are many birds by the river, offering great birding opportunities. The trail is easy, with just some rolling steeps at the beginning; well maintained! I'd suggest leaving to hike early in the morning during the summer months as it can get hot in the alpine sun.
The drive in is long and bumpy requiring a medium, to high-clearance vehicle due to large rocks embedded in the road. There are numerous beautiful camping spots on the way in, no need to pay at the early campgrounds.
From the main trail you can access numerous big mountain ascents, so plan to backpack in and day pack up!

moderate hike, short but with elevation change. great camping

When you get to the trailhead facing the posted map and registry, take the trail on the right if you want to run into a rock slide and not find your way through like we did.

So we went back.

Back at the trailhead (facing the map) if you take the trail to the left, you’ll find a lovely hike through forest, and meadows. THIS was the hike I read about in Sun Valley Mag and the one I actually set out to do. At around mile 1.6 you reach a gravel beach along the river and it’s a great turn-around spot if you don’t want to continue on to the lakes.

This trail as mapped here is to Roundhouse NOT the summit. The summit is an additional 2 miles (and about another 1800' elevation gain!) one way from the Roundhouse Connector, which is itself .7 miles. The signs at the bottom are misleading because it says 3.7 mi. to Roundhouse and 5 to the summit but the connector makes it so that it's a considerable detour to do so.

Pro Tip: the gondola at roundhouse is free on the way down.

If you want to continue to the summit, you can append that 4 mile round trip and take the connector to roundhouse for the free ride down making for a 7.7 mi total trail. Roundhouse is worth a stop too for some food and beer and to really absorb those views!

This is not an easy trail. To get to the lake there is a hard climb almost straight up.

A really nice easy hike through swathes of wildflowers. The lake was relatively quiet as we hiked early but there were several families and groups hiking in ad we made the return...guessing it would have been quite noisy later! Definitely worth the effort to drive up to Baker Lake though just for the wildflowers.

Well maintained and the view is incredible!!!

Short and sweet hike up to a small lake. All the flowers were dead, but the views of the snow covered mountains made up for it. Some small patches of ice and snow but nothing crazy. The burnt trees are pretty cool. Easy hike overall.

Moderately strenuous trail with great views the whole way. The hike to the overlook is predominantly shady, and the rest of the hike is a nice balance of sun and shade. We hiked this Sept. 30th, and the trail was clear, although we saw snow patches higher up. We turned this into a loop by hiking up Bald Mountain Trail, then coming down Saddle Up Flow Trail and taking the Roundhouse Connector Trail back to the main trail. This trail also works for running; although parts are rocky, we found it relatively smooth and root-free.

This trail is steep & extremely difficult to find because of all the fallen logs across the trails. It's easy to get lost! It is in need of some serious trail work!

Easy hike for all ages. Lots to look at, from flowers to creeks, to the final destination of the beautiful lake. Lots of people on the trail.

This area is very beautiful! Be aware that the trail is very poorly maintained and disappears for long sections at a time. Be prepared to do a lot of bushwhacking and climbing over downed logs and avalanche debris.

Quiet and serene trail. However, not well maintained with a number of fallen trees and the trail kind of disappears as you approach the river crossing which seems to have moved from the one in the map. We crossed via the large, white fallen tree. At the end you are by a waterfall and a view of a sawtooth formation in the distance. We tried going further up toward the lake, but it became a bit of a scramble.

My track below is the Bald Mountain Trail. It is a tough up but worth the effort. Free ride down the mountain. Great lunch at Roundhouse Resturant.

Great hike! Visiting from Colorado and was looking for a mellow hike with family and our dogs. The dogs got to cool off at the lake before turning around and heading back down. The wildflowers are amazing and the contrast between the burnt trees from the recent wildfires and the bright colors of the wildflowers are beautiful.

My map below is to Brodie Gulch Saddle. On the trail to Baker Lake at 1.4 miles (and .3 to lake) turn right on Apollo trail. there is a trail sign here. Then go .8 to the saddle. Beautiful. Then turn around and back to the trail sign. Turn right to lake and left to car. My map shows I did not go to lake as it had started to rain. This hike as of now has the best WILDFLOWERS.

This was difficult. We ride the gondola up, not really planning a hike. We got to the top to take a look at the beautiful view and decided to walk down. Quite steep at times. Lots of rocks. Good hike tho. Very pretty.

Pretty lake and the hike is really easy. There was a fire a few years back and it hit this area pretty hard. It was still pretty though because all the burn allowed for new undergrowth and there was a lot of flowers. The lake is awesome as far as scenery. We fly fished and hooked a few but never landed them.

Not sure what trail Sam is talking about. The Cold Springs trail I hike starts at the bottom of the Cold Springs lift. However, just to get to this trailhead u have to hike up a fairly steep road that may actually be the hardest part of the hike. The trail winds around the south side of Seattle Ridge and finally ends at the top of the Broadway ski run. However, u are not yet to the top. Plan this hike carefully as it is not a family friendly hike. It will wear u out. However once u get to the top u get a free ride down on the lift/gondola.

I really enjoyed the hike. I also hiked to the saddle from the Trail Creek side. I started to go further but as was previously mentioned the trail sucks and is very dangerous especially when u add the wind. I turned around an made it an in and back. I also tried to hike the trail from the Lake Creek side. It is mostly an old mining road. When the road ran out I lost the trail so I turned around and went back. The hike from the Trail Creek side is much more scenic.

Hiked this with my two daughters and a friend of there's today 8-27-15. The weather was perfect and the hike itself was pretty easy but it seemed to be longer than 2.2 miles. A lot of burnt trees along the way but the lake was beautiful and we even jumped in before heading back down.

You need a four wheel drive to get to the trailhead.

I did this last summer and it is a great hike. One of my all time favorites. It actually can be done as a loop but regardless of which side of Trail Creek you start on the trail is difficult to find in places so be prepared to just find your own way. The trail(s) dead end at the headwaters of Trail Creek so just keep going up the canyon and you can't get lost.. There is a saddle separating the two headwaters. It is an easy day hike or would be a great place to camp and do some additional exploring.

I too liked this hike. I just hiked to the saddle that looks down on Trail Creek road. The High Ridge trail actually continues past the saddle but the trail is in very poor shape and dangerous so I turned around. The trail can be accessed from the end of Lake Creek Road just north of Ketchum but I lost the trail so I turned around and made it an in and out.
