FishingGreat!Muddy

Honestly, I was a little disappointed...but perhaps my expectations were too high? I came here for a Labor Day weekend fly-fishing trip, and thought it would be good to take this trail to head further upriver from the end of the road to a more secluded fishing area. I was surprised that I had to hike about two miles before coming to an area with relatively convenient fishing access. The hike followed the river, but stayed well above it most of the way (with limited views), hence the disappointment. Also, the trail was surprisingly muddy in places despite being late summer after a long dry spell. HOWEVER, I caught the two biggest fish of my life in a section of river off this trail, so I definitely did not regret the hike. Plus, lots of social distancing with this hike!

Fun hike up to a nice view point overlooking the river. The trail is nicely maintained until it isn't. There is no real stopping point it just becomes a very narrow trail with a lot of vegetation. This is probably past the 2 mile mark.

Really enjoyed, poor gps quality as you can see from the map. Told us it was about 6.5 miles, unsure on the accuracy. Very lush and green right now, beautiful. Would recommend.

2nd time. Took all of my daughters (minus one) this time. Still didn't make it to the end but had a terrific time. Love this easy trail.

I chose this trail because I wanted to start with an easy trail as I work my way back into hiking. It is indeed an easy trail but it is also in bear country. After hiking 2 miles in by myself I began to pass several large bones. Once I got to bones that still had meat on them I decided to turn around. The only wildlife I saw was deer. And that’s all I wanted to see. I did not realize it was bear country until I went back into the town of Avery and saw the pictures on the wall.

The only wildlife I saw was a fuzzy caterpillar but it was the fuzziest caterpillar I ever did see.

A good easy trail for most folks. We went about 3 miles with a toddler in a pack and two dogs. First several miles are very rocky and were pretty washed out from recent rains. Lots of horse poop from pack horses heading back and forth from the lodge. We ran across a Mama Moose and her Baby just off the trail in some pretty moosy water. Thankfully, some horse riders came up and were able to get her a little further off the trail so we could pass. Lots of flowers though and the St. Joe is always gorgeous. Oh, it was reported at the trail that there had been recent bear activity further up the trail, I don't think we went far enough to even get into that.

Took trail 11 to Fawn Lake with a stop up to Mallard Peak along the way, lots of mosquitoes, great fishing. Fawn Lake is worth the hike. It’s beautiful. Not too many other hikers on the trail. Great trails to backpack through!

This trail is top notch! We’ve been five times now and are always obsessed. Current conditions are perfect with essentially zero snow! We went from the Aquarius side and hiked just to larkens. Ran into some people that camped at Heart Lake and said it was mostly free of snow. If you go to larkens definitely check out Mud Lake and the waterfall along the way!

Backpacking

My boyfriend and I are just starting to get into backpacking and this was our first real backpacking trip! We had a blast however there were a few problems along the trail. The trail was pretty easy to follow until trail 108. In the beginning It was an easy trail for the most part however once we got to the fork of trail 12 and 108, the trail disappeared. They were both clearly labeled and trail 12 looked decently maintained but about 100ft from the fork trail 108 was practically nonexistent. We decided to keep going however thinking the trail would start to come back or we would be able to find It... we ended up doing this for so long there was a slim chance we could make our way back to the trail. Not the smartest idea, we admit, but It was too late. So we kept going northwest, luckily we had brought a compass and some printed out maps. We kept going northwest knowing we would hit the sawtooth creek or the river. Finally after about 9 hours of going up and down steep mountains and over/under tons of blown down trees and through shrubs that were taller than our heads, we finally hit the sawtooth creek. We ended up hiking about a mile down and hit the river and knew about a quarter of a mile back was trail 50. So we turned around went back up the creek and got back on trail at that point and completed the loop. It was extremely challenging when we lost the trail and we contacted the forest services afterwords and they said multiple people have complained about the lack of maintenance of that trail. I would advise bringing a compass, a good map, an excellent gps, and a lot of determination. It was a great challenge and I feel a lot more confident surviving in the woods now, but It was not the safest route by far. Good luck!

This trail was my first "real" backpacking trip, and was absolutely amazing! The forest was dense, the fly fishing was great, and the views were spectacular. If you have the chance to take this trip, by all means, do it! You will not regret your choice.
