The Upper Mesa Falls Lookout Trail is family-friendly and goes to several observation decks overlooking the Upper Mesa waterfalls and surrounding canyon. Some of the decks require using staircases on their final descent. There is a fee for the parking lot. The boardwalk begins at the Mesa Falls Lodge and loops from above the falls and meanders down the canyon for a few hundred yards until it connects back to the trail near the lodge. The trail is accessible year-round but during the winter special gear is required. From November-April it is only accessible via snowshoes, cross country skis, or snowmobile and the road to the trailhead seasonally closes due to snow. Please see the park's website for up to date information. Accessibility: This trail is considered partially accessible for wheelchair and stroller users. The trail surface is paved (boardwalk) and typically at least five feet wide. Some of the viewpoints are not accessible due to staircases. There are some steep sections in the estimated grade (12%) but it is unclear whether these are being calculated from the actual trail or from staircases.Show more

Mostly easy out-and-back hike. The first four miles of this trail follow a gated FS road, then it's all bush-whacking. The 500-foot descent to and ascent from the falls is very steep. Most people see the iconic falls of Island Park from the overview, atop the cliff on the other side of the Henry's Fork. This destination is only feet away (don't fall in).Show more
