Well done trail. Pick up one of the trail guides as there are numbered spots where you can stop and learn more about the park. The highlight is Buffalo Cave. I made a short video of the park if anyone is interested: https://practicalvagabonds.com/visit-craters-of-the-moon/

This trail is really about whats below the surface! You can go into 4 lava tube cave. Indian Tunnel was our favorite. We made a short video of Craters of the Moon if anyone is interested: https://practicalvagabonds.com/visit-craters-of-the-moon/

Seeing the molds of trees caught in the lava flow was fascinating in this interesting landscape of different kinds of lava. The various plants and trees are interesting, too.

This is a must do! Gorgeously scenery and views. Park is well kept and has great camping facilities. Make sure you hike in the morning.

Nice trail with several cool scenic stops. Nice view of the lava flow and the northern half of the park, and a quiet little trail running around most of the loop. Gets a bit more exciting once you get to the lava flows firsthand - pretty cool to walk over and check everything out up close. The cave is a great way to finish up and cool off, since it stays pretty cold all year round!

Beautiful, surreal. Worth the hike! Very windy the day we went so dust blowing. With younger children consider the sharp rocks.

Pretty nice trail, but the trail is overgrown the last mile and a half or so before turning around. Pretty much can't avoid making contact with the brush. My wife found a tick on her sock, then later another on her head, so probably not worth going past where it begins getting overgrown.

Quite possibly the best trail in the park, and definitely the most challenging. Offers a good variety of scenery and features unique to Craters of the Moon. My most highly recommended in the reserve, for sure.

Nice looped trail. I ran the Tree Molds Trail and then Broken Looped Trail for a total of 4 miles. It was in late May and it was warm, but it was neat to run around an inactive volcano. :)

So different and amazing.

The end of this trail is a little anti-climactic (where the actual tree molds are) but the hike was nice. Not a ton of shade options so if you are going during that hot part of the day, sunscreen and water!

Enjoyed this trail and it's eclectic features! Totally kid-friendly and not hard. Bring your headlamp for the cave! :)

Nice little hiking loop. Not technical, but lots to see. Kid friendly.

The tree molds are probably the least scenic part of this whole trail. The trip in is beautiful, with a crater, shrubs, trees and of course the vast wilderness of the volcanic wasteland, always beckoning for you to wander out into it.

unique landscape, easy

Monday, March 16, 2015

This is a unique and unusual landscape in an out of the way place. Worth seeing just for the novelty of the large lava fields.

This area is a freak of nature. You really do feel like you're on another world. You can see most of the "must sees" just driving through, but if you like there are some trails and nature trips near the visitor center that can fuel your curiosity.

Amazing and austere place. Recommend exploring Lava tunnels (dewdrop, boy scout, and Indian) and also climbing to the top of inferno cone. This is easier said then done as two steps up equal one step back in the igneous rock scree.

I camped and explored this National Park with my family (wife; son 10 y/o; daughter 8 y/o). The rangers and the programs they deliver were outstanding. Getting a caver permit was not difficult (even though we had been in other caves in recent years - there's good information on the National Park Service website). We were there for one day / one night. We probably could have spent another night & day there. In August, it was hot and there was a strong and steady wind, which is typical. The stargazing was AMAZING. I'll upload a photo.

Craters of the Moon National Park is definitely worth seeing, at least once. It was awe inspiring to see something so unique and different. Glad I saw it for myself - the views were amazing.

A really eerie place to hike. You truly feel like you're on another planet, it seems so desolate. There are several short trails to hike around (and a few caves to explore, if you can obtain a permit), and it's a great place to stop and stretch your legs, or you can hike a few of the trails and make a full day of it. Great experience.

Spent nearly a week here going through lava tubes and hiking back to echo crater. Navigation in back country can be dificult as trails can easily be lost within all the volcanic soils beautiful. Watch the wind as it gets kicking accros the plain. Hiking back to Echo Crater we did not see a single person but awesome geological features.

Nice little break along Hwy 93. National Park service is improving some of the roads in the park right now, but still a great little place to see.
