Aloha! I typically hike up 1-3 times a week for almost 3 years now. Went up 7 times in the last 13 days. Had an awesome time hiking up today! I will be going again tomorrow on Wednesday and this weekend Saturday and Sunday. Possibly Thursday and Friday too. I have probably done this particular hike more than anyone else on island. (over 120+ times) It is often windy and/or rainy but we never have issues as we always have the right gear (including microspikes and gloves) which are supplied by me when we go. If you're looking to hike and want to link up or get some ideas of what this trail looks like feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram @mike.karas or mikekarasphotography@gmail.com. Bring plenty of water for this hike and other hikes out here in Hawaii.

My husband and I very first hike in Hawaii. we chose Diamond Head. enjoyed the views. Too busy on MLK day. Could not get a good leave.

Short, moderate hike! There was way too many people though. It was difficult to take pictures at the top. But the view was well worth it.

Amazing amazing trail! It’s hard to describe unless you’ve done it. As others have said, be sure to bring plenty of water as you’re in the sun and it gets hot fast. If you do an out and back, leave extra time for the climb back up. The views and silence in the crater are out of the world.

As a 57 year old out of shape woman I found this hike to be pretty hard. It was worth it though to see the view from the second pillbox. Do not go inland to find the second pillbox- follow the L shaped trail map along the ridge. You will end up heading down at the end towards the second pillbox.

It’s only easy up to the whale watch lookout where you start your scramble down to the tide pools. The scramble isn’t easy, the rocks are all loose and it’s quite steep. Wear tennis shoes, hat and sunscreen. Bring water and water shoes would be helpful so you don’t hurt your feet climbing in and out of the tide pools. Check the surf report before going and watch the waves. The blowholes at the tide pools were cool too. Their are still faint arrows pointing the route back up the side.

It was so hard to climb, but the scenery at the top is wonderful enough to make you forget all about it. Especially the sunset from the top is really the best.

Doing this trail in my opinion is better than the stairs. It’s more of an adventure, the views are amazing and it’s a bit longer. Took me a solid 3 hours. I went up the stairs and went the back way down. I’m honestly surprised the legal way isn’t illegal. It’s definitely a hard hike. Bring plenty of snacks and water.

I did this hike today on January 22nd 2018. When I went, there was no guard or police officer posted. However, other hikers I saw along the way said there was one when they went by. Anyways this hike took me about 2 hours up and the views were amazing. They’re were rescue helicopters flying around up there and will come very close to the stairs. Make sure to go on a non cloudy day. Otherwise your views will be blocked at the top.

Nice rainforest loop. Not much for views etc. surprising this is rated so highly given other areas.

Really liked this hike we did the hike from the paved road & did black
Pipe loop first then down to waterfalls & back up. Prob around 5 miles. Loved it!!

Great starter hike for our first day on Kauai. Cool trees for shade & critters on the side of the trail. Maybe they are salamanders???

My average speed walking was a mile in 45 min. Plan for a 2 to 2.5 hour walk each way but well worth the time.

I started from the main trail head , up the pillboxes, and continue until I got off the hills next to Kamahele St.

I've been going every weekend. this past Saturday it was very cloudy and muddy. If you want to avoid getting fined/arrested I will be going up this Saturday the 26th this legal backway. In my opinion going up the stairs all the way gets boring, the backway is more of an adventure and there are better views. It can get pretty muddy and windy. Crampons(spikes) recommended, I do have some spare spikes.
If interested send me a message on instagram @angelo_q or email me at chicolo@hotmail.com for details. Make sure to bring plenty of water and food.

Nice hike. The second option is a bit overgrown so I recommend wearing long pants. other than that great work out with an amazing views from the top.

Great little hike to the falls with lots of great vegetation to look at. The trail is not maintained so be prepared for some ducking under fallen branches and some steep muddy terrain. Wear swim suits if you want to enjoy a dip at the end!

Rocks can be slippery but footing is solid overall. Good workout; nice morning hike.

I was more annoyed at having my pace set by the 8,000 people ahead of me than I was thrilled about the views. There are better less crowded views on the island.

Let me start this saying I had fun. This was a great experience for me. I hiked solo.

The trail was very muddy. I would never attempt it without proper water resistant shoes with good traction.

Up to the final loop was a decent, moderate hike. You are going up hill and it's not easy, but nothing too strenuous. You will climb throug banyan tree roots so that is fun (no sarcasm, it was really cool).

Now for the loop at the end. First, this hike is tagged as kid friendly. the upper section of the last loop is NOT for children. In many sections the trail is overgrown and you cannot see where you are stepping. It requires a lot of concentration and you are very close to the edge. I am an experienced hiker and I had trouble in some spots. It was a challenge, and I was looking for one. So this hike was great for me. I am not trying to scare anyone away. My hike was nearly 7 miles and took me about 4 hours.

I highly recommend following the advice in all the other reviews and if you are going to do the loop go counter clockwise. I went clockwise and missed the turn off twice and I had a GPS and trail map telling me where to go.

If you make it to the final loop and go either right or left you will get some amazing views before the hard part starts. and you can always double back. So don't be afraid, just be prepared.

This is not open to the public. There are signs posted that warn against unauthorized personnel accessing this property. Enter at your own risk (that being a substantial fine $$$). That being said, there is one part of this trail (on the far side of the loop) that is not clearly marked and is not visible. I hiked out “hugging the ocean” only to have to turn around and hike back to the paved road, making this hike twice as long as originally planned. Take plenty of water with you and apply sunscreen to your entire body. Wear a hat that covers as much skin as possible — at the least a baseball hat, but ideally one that will also cover your neck. Steep parts of the backside of the loop are smooth, wide, rocky pathways that were once old lava flows. These are very slippery when dry with a lot of loose gravel, and also dangerous when wet.

Paved walk to the lookout. Access to lighthouse is prohibited with a 1500$ fine for anyone who is caught jumping the fence. Wry easy walk to the lookout, mild traffics between 0600-0900, minimal shade during sunny hours (bring water and sunscreen)

Does anyone know if this hike is worth paying local guides for? Or are the trail markers visible and quite straight forward along the legal route? Guide cost is about $160-$180/person which is pricey.

Did this hike on a fairly dry and sunny day so there wasn’t too much mud but that also meant that the waterfall was fairly disappointing. I hiked this trail clockwise. Be very mindful of the trail markings. Almost missed the turn off for the trail and also missed the marking for a turn. If you keep going straight in this portion you’ll end up back onto a road. You’ll quickly find your way back if you miss it though. Beautiful scenery and a very adventurous hike through the jungle/woods down to the creek bed. You’ll follow along there till you get to the waterfall. At this point I would just turn back though. The trail was extremely hard to follow with many paths leading all over the place. It was so bad that I ended up on another small trail completely skipping over a fourth of the hike, leading back up to the main loop trail. I’m not typically one to lose my way on hikes but I got to a point where I was so annoyed that I just followed this side path back up the mountain. The map is also a very useful tool in this hike. Really interesting overall but be prepared to get lost.

so pretty!!!!! and long!!!

it took me allllllll day to find this trailhead and kept going left in all the wrong places and ended up at lulumahu falls BUT WHEN I GOT TO THE RIGHT SPOT it was beautiful and easy lol

I highly recommend going through and returning the way listed on this map. We parked just down the street at around 4am and easily climbed through the hole in the fence to the right of the main gate.

We made the mistake of returning through the other gate, where we encountered the guard, had to crawl under the gate which was within feet of an angry pit bull, and were bombarded by angry neighbor verbal assaults, video recordings, and threatening up close encounters with the neighborhood dogs. Use the main road it’s way easier.

This is a workout, you will sweat your ass off in the beginning, then freeze up near the top. Bring an extra warm shirt or jacket in case you get too soaked like I did.

Not too far but you will definitely feel the elevation. Very rocky and muddy and be mindful of other hikers.
