Great quick hike. Steep in some places. Great view. Recommended water and snack because you'll want to hang out up at the top for a bit.

Really cool, interesting climb to the top with a great vantage point of the neighboring valley and beaches. Wouldn’t recommend on an extremely windy day, or for small kids and dogs. The hike does require quite a bit of scrambling up rocks depending on the route you take.

Nice short, uphill hike. Park at the large dirt lot adjacent to the lower Makua Cave and head down the road toward Kaena Point and take the trail just before the 25mph sign. As you head up, take every right fork you can. This hike is a little too steep for even large dogs and small children. I completed it on a dry day, but it would probably be extremely slippery on a wet day. Great views of the west coast at the top and the upper cave is a cool spot to enjoy.

Did this on a wet day. Wore slippers which was a mistake because they kept getting stuck in the mud and coming off. I actually had to go barefoot at times which is not advisable for the whole walk. We got caught in the rain which was fine but definitely needed water shoes or tennis shoes.

This is in addition to my earlier review. We went too late in the day. Going to the top was not really an option for my 4 year old grandson. It’s climbing over lots of rocks and skirting the hillside with exposure. It’s a great workout for the surer of foot.

Went on a hot and sunny day and took my 4 year old grandson. Only went part way due to heat and although my grandson was doing very well going up, we were a little concerned about coming back down. An early start would be much better.

sweet trail can be done point to point by going up main way and coming down right ridge to watertanks at piliuka pl kawiwi way. I went to peak at 3200 ft, not recommended as its a hot trail and dehydration was a big problem. best on rainy day. dog friendly aside from 1 narrow canyon section.

As catsmallears said before, This is NOT private property. As far as I know you should even be able to drive up the road to the actual trail or to the top of the initial hill as on the Honolulu parcel website shows the road is public. For them to being do that and saying you need to have a tour is disgusting and shows what has happened to oahu, making a fee to enjoy the aina. im saddened to hear about this, anyways just enjoy the hike. if there is any saying anything they are speaking nonsense.

Great views. Moderate difficulty due to steep narrow trail. Wouldn’t recommend for little kids, but great for any moderately in shape hiker

Pretty sweet hike that will kick your literal ass. I consider myself fit and active, but came away from this hike sore in all the places. There are ropes that are necessary to use if you'd like to complete the last 1/3 of the hike. I repeat- rope climbing is absolutely necessary to complete this hike.
Advisories:
(1) Don't go on this hike if it has rained recently. Just don't. You will probably have to just slide down most of the mountain on your way down.
(2) If your not into heights and real skinny razor blade-like trails, probably don't do this hike.
(3) Don't go on this hike without at *least* 1.5 liters of wawa, and some sort of snack(s). Did it without any food and only 1 liter of water, which was not cool at all.
(4) If it's cloudy, consider the fact that you may be disappointed to struggle strait up a mountain for 3 hours only to find that you can't see further than a few feet in front of you.

Anyway, lots of type 2 fun. Highly recommended.

It is a great trail for people who likes walking by the ocean. I am mostly a forest person so I did not enjoy it much. The trail is very easy people were walking with flip flops.

Easy hike for the whole family. Nice views and lots of wildlife. The bird sanctuary at the end was really cool and we saw a seal napping on the rocks. Take water! It was really hot the day we went and there is little to no shade the entire way.

Fun short hike. It’s fairly steep and straight up. My 12 year old did it with no problems but a family with younger kids had to turn around about half way up. The upper cave is not as impressive as the lower face but the view is absolutely beautiful. There is a lovely breeze and the photo ops are totally worth the climb. Great way to see the West side of the island- check out the caves and then hit the beach. Makaha is our favorite on that side!

The trail is right next to the 25mph sign. Recommend taking a buddy if your going to continue to the top. It gets a little hairy and most of the way you have to rock climb. Definitely bring some good hiking shoes!

Amazing view! It’s a little steep and you have to climb rocks to get to the top. There are some trails but for the most part you just have to commit and find your own way to the top!

Very windy, rocky in some places. Lots of albatross at the end and really pretty overall.

Gorgeous trail. Take the beach route or trail route.

This is a fairly easy hike that I think anyone could complete and the best part is that it comes with a great reward! We decided to complete this hike to catch the sunset and I would highly recommend doing this hike to do just that! It can be pretty heavily trafficked but there is enough space at the top for you to choose where you'd like to sit and enjoy the view. Getting down may be a lot slower after sunset considering the amount of people that were trying to leave the trail at the same time. Also bring a flashlight because it will be harder to see on the way back down after the sun has set. Really cool pillboxes, the pink one is super cute! My only reason for giving it a full 5 star review was because of how heavily trafficked this trail is. You can tell people frequent this hike by the stuff people leave behind at the top (beer bottles/packs of smokes/garbage).

Scenic hike along the coastline, easy trail to follow, bit rocky at a few points but all in all easy for everyone! There is no shade the entire way, maybe one or two places to rest with little shade but otherwise, come prepared with sun protection and plenty of water! The tide pools at the loop of the trail were incredible. I HIGHLY recommend taking a dip into one of them to relax and cool off! Its almost like having your own private pool! Then venture around where the Albatross live (from afar of course, as it is roped off). They are a very cool looking bird! Huge eyes, wide wing span, never seen them before but they did fly around and got close enough to us at one point where my boyfriend had to duck down to avoid getting in its way!

The last few rope sections were muddy and somewhat sketchy. Otherwise, a very fun hike.

Hiked January 2019,
If you asked me to envision my perfect death it would be 85 years old meditating in a cave overlooking the ocean. The cave at the top of this hike is the cave I imagine when I picture this scenario. It’s not about the depth of the cave or the work you put in to get to it. This hike is all about the tranquility you feel when you reach the peak. It frames the ocean beautifully as the ocean holds up the sky in the horizon. Definitely a place to revisit before I leave.
