Nice trail

By far the best hike I have done so far in Hawaii!!! I will not discourage anyone from doing this hike but please know that there will be some climbing to get to the top of the peaks. I only did two but next time I come back I will finish the trail. It is challenging but worth every step you take.

Super fun trail! Be careful about doing it when it’s been rainy because you do need to cross the stream bed several times and go up alongside three waterfalls with ropes. It’s muddy and there is a part where the trail is missing so you need to swing across with ropes. The trail follows the stream bed in along the last few houses in Palolo Valley (trail head is on private property but there is a hand painted sign marking it and warning caution and street side parking) and pipes bringing water from the crater. It can be windy along the rim of the crater but it’s a really neat and very different view! I’ve seen families try to bring kids along for this one but I wouldn’t... it’s pretty long and the last group I saw made it to the base of the third waterfall and was trying to figure the shortest way out. There are a few different paths that crisscross and can cut a little time off.

Super fun, super beautiful hike. I had wanted to do this for years, ever since I was a little kid riding over the Pali. It did not disappoint and I’ve gone back several times. Avoid if too wet because it can get muddy and people have been seriously injured. But otherwise it’s a fun few hours. The views from the peaks are fantastic and (most) of the tricker parts have ropes to help.

Brief trail, great views. The first time I went I accidentally missed the puka (walked right over it—when you reach the tall rock face you need to u-turn left and head down to the next level to see it) and went up to the next peak instead. If you are comfortable with ropes and heights that’s not a bad add on to this trail.

This was a last minute find and is now one of my favorite hikes. Can be a little tricky if you’re not sure footed. It gets a little slick in some spots. Enjoy!

Terrific hike!

very fun trail. it can be very muddy and dangerous. great views and a nice challenge

This hike has a very steep incline for about the whole time. Must be in shape and have good stamina. After you hit 2.5 miles there are many climbs which require use of ropes. If you have never been on a hike with ropes, I recommend turning around. Great views about the whole time looking over the west side of Oahu.

Awesome but there are sketchy spots and difficult when muddy
Fun though!

Gorgeous hike got lost at the top of the crater. Don’t if you don’t want to go all the way around once you get to the top hang a left of the creek before the crater and it will take you back down.

Short hike with lots of fun scrambling to reach an amazing view. We ventured to a little scramble area that looked like it’d reach the peak but we turned around with the kiddos.

This was a really great hike very worth it for the views at the top. It is definitely no joke, especially if you complete the crater and don’t take the shortcut after the third waterfall.

Parking - we had to park about 0.7 miles away on the street. We hit the trailhead at 1pm. We only expected to be able to accomplish 1 peak (we are very experienced hikers but have heard how crazy this hike is and were actually scared to even do it), but ended up doing all 3!! It took us 6 hours from when we left my car to when we got back, we were stuck in the dark on the way back using flashlights on our phone, so start early!!

People hesitate to do the third peak because they see the drop down from the second peak, and it’s sort of an optical illusion. It does look like you drop off the cliff with a rope but don’t worry there are rock edges to put your feet the whole way down. I will say though, coming back from the third peak and back up the second peak was terrifying. You are bouldering, and I saw my life flash a few times. We also saw a trail of blood the whole way back up.

Just getting to the top of the first peak is a grueling hike in itself and has the best views of the hike, so if you’re uneasy I think you should stick to the first and feel accomplished of all of your hard work!

Takes a little effort to find the trail after getting to the arch but well worth the uphill hike for the view at the top. DON’T climb over the arch unless you have climbing equipment or are an adrenaline junky

Great trail to experience! easy walk besides last few miles to climb back to the mountain.

This is my favorite hike on Oahu.
Gona do this one again tomorrow morning!

Great hike, very short and simple to the first 2 peaks. If you’re worried about the 3rd peak, you can see the difficulty going down the 2nd so you can assess right away whether or not you’re comfortable doing it. A note on parking: I would recommend to NOT park on the street. We saw multiple smashed in car windows. We parked at the lot for the park with the washrooms and it was fine. Took us 5hr round trip from there to do the 3 peaks.

Pretty crazy but fun hike! Lots of climbing involved but there are ropes to help you on most of the difficult climbs. The views are breath taking and it's totally worth the strenuous climb to the top! Climbing the third water fall was deffintly my favorite part of the hike! You better have your day clear tho and pack lots of snacks and water because it will take 6 or 7 hours give or take to hike the whole trail.

Great warmup for the Pali notches hike on the other side of the parking lot

Awesome hike! The notches consist of 4 sections of 15-30 foot rock climbs

A favorite. Taken many friends and visitors here. Sweeping views, climbing sections and a great challenge.

Enjoyable

Admittedly, I only made it a mile in on this hike. It is definitely a more difficult one with inclines the entire way and a technical terrain. I threw in the towel when I got to the steep rock climbing wall with a rope.

Omg this was the most beautiful hike we have ever done! We are casual hikers usually doing 3-4 hour moderate trails. This was challenging for me. I’d say moderate to the waterfalls some rope climbing which I thought was kinda fun. Then the waterfall and ridge came. The 3rd waterfall you climb looks easy from the bottom, and it’s not hard, it’s just a lot longer then you expect like it doesn’t end! Then the ridge towards the top some parts i couldn’t get up without my husband boosting me. It is so slippery!!! Even when it’s dry the lil foot holds you have there is lil pebbly dirt that slips out from underneath you. I’d say you definitely should wear some sort of shoe grip just to make life easy. I had Nike’s. But when we got to the top the view is like 360 all sides all the way out to Honolulu and the opposite coast. So amazing! We had to hurry back so no as much time up there as we liked. But I highly recommend NOT going back down the waterfall, the other ridge was much easier and u can go down on you butt if needed. Lots of roots towards the bottom but I used the trees for balance. We were slow so it was like 7 hours total for us. Views were so worth it!

Challenging and lengthy hike. Took about 5 hours round trip. Olomana in Kailua would be a good hike to challenge yourself on prior to tackling Kaala. Be prepared to climb into the clouds and not get any view from the top. Visibility was maybe 100ft when we last climbed this one. Fantastic views of both Waianae and Makua Valley while 3000 or so feet up. Punched into clouds soon after though. Honestly hit or miss given the altitude.

Didn’t make it all the way to the Puka. Very windy and slick the day we went. Will try this one again!

Awesome hike. Very difficult towards the top. Best hike on Oahu.
