Beautiful sunset pics!

Magical beach, absolute worth spending a full day at with lunch and beers. Hike through exposed black lava fields so lather up on sunscreen in/out.

trail running

Agree with comments on technicality of trail for running... had to go slower due to roots and loose rocks (although volcanic and grippy), yesterday’s rain made for slightly slippery terrain. Beautiful and convenient!

Pretty jungle trail!

Attempted to trail run this, but it was way too technical for us, ended up run/hiking 5 miles on the various trails. It was beautiful! You become immersed in the jungle, then pop out and see cows grazing next to the property, are greeted with lava mountain roads, and then can become immersed into the jungle again! Super beautiful, quiet (except for all the birds!) and perfect for an early morning run/hike. Lots of roots/overgrown paths, but completely worth it.

on Makuala O'Oma Trail

A nice quiet trail to take the dogs hiking on. It is not far from town but cooler, so good for a couple hour adventure, depending on how many side trails you want to go down.

We really enjoyed this trail. It was 16 degrees cooler than Kona when we arrived there. Felt good but soon became quite humid in the forest but that did not take away from our enjoyment. We hiked a loop of about 1.8 miles according to my phone tracker. Beautiful flowers, ferns & singing birds & literally no annoying bugs. Wear shoes as there are lots of rocks & roots & you either have to go uphill on the way in or out depending if you start clockwise or counter clockwise on the loop. May rain on & off so be prepared. Shaded in the forest all the way. Trail is not marked & there are a few off shoots so this app was helpful to keep us on the loop using the gps.

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen along this route. Bring extra water. It’s hot.

We hiked the loop portion clockwise and it was a quick 0.9 hike. Lovely foliage, no bugs and easy to see the trail. The trail was beautifully scented though the smell of wood smoke (campers?) crept in 1/3 into this slice of Hawaii heaven. Plenty of free parking along the road near the trailhead.

I am giving 4 Stars because we have only been on BI for a week and this was our first hike. It might actually be a 5-star trail. We love that it is dog-friendly, 15 minutes from town, and a totally different landscape than Kona. We only did the short trail, but will be back to do a longer hike soon.

You can make this trail quite a bit longer by taking offshoots. Beautiful surroundings and quiet. The loop back up is a bit of a workout.

Excellent trail with beautiful surroundings

Gorgeous Flowers.

Just what we needed to escape the 90+ degree heat! Temp dropped by 20 pts on the drive up from Kona. The trail was lush, beautiful and a bit slick in places. Don’t wear sandals,

Our absolutely favorite place on the big island.

nice area. very clean.

Just minutes from Kona Town but worlds away in climate, this trail is a short and easy hike that will take you out of the heat! It’s poorly marked, actually there are no signs whatsoever, so bring your phone with GPS because the signal is pretty good. The trail itself is not bad but lots of big rocks and roots, easy to twist an ankle if you’re not careful. The birdsong in this forest is a thing of beauty!

I kind of had a hard time figuring out what was what but did eventually. Direction and maps are not my strong point. Beautiful place to check out. Saw turtles and I even saw a monk seal.

Very cool trail along coast of Kekaha Kai State Park. Start at the popular southern enterance (Mahai'ula Bay) and hike along the trail past the renowned Makalawena Beach, over Pu'u Kili, to the popular Kua Bay. Portions along this path are heavily visited, but the entire distance is seldom walked, as most people access Kua via car, or stop their hike at Makalawena for the sand. I saw no one on the trail north of Makalawena till the paved rd at Kua.

From the south it is an easy walk across a mostly level foot trail, but with medium rocks. Hot if sun is out. From north it is a little more technical walk down sloped 4wd trail over medium to large rocks, although not hard. The red route on the site isn't showing going to Makalawena, follow the black dotted trail instead. I'd recommend at least tennis shoes for either way.

There are other hikes of note that aren't listed (at least that I can find) within this park.

Pu'u Ku'ili - very short hike up a cinder cone, immediately next to Kua Bay. Look for the 15mph sign on the drive in, the entrance to the trail is about 30 yards back from the sign across the road on the left. Hidden so if you don't know it's there you'll miss it. Really cool views form the top of this cone. I'd recommend tennis shoes, but I have done it a few times in slippers (Hawaiian for flip flops).

Makole'a Black Sand Beach - about a mile hike south from the Kekaha Kai State park pit toilets. Follow the coast until you start to see white coral chunks marking a rough trail over Pahoehoe lava flows. Cool little beach with sweet black sand. Saw one person during hike. I did hike in slippers.

Beautiful lush foliage and just enough up and down to get your heart pumping.

Great place for a quick hike to escape the heat in Kona.

Very lush trail. I went with my 3yr old and 1 year old. The trail floor is knotty, narrow and not well marked. If you have young children a carrier that straps onto you is recommended. There are some steep hills. I'm very athletic so carrying both children back up hill was fine. Definitely going to be a regular visit for us. Beautiful.

Not a hike, and fairly small beach

The beach is crowded, close to the street, and very small. This was my least favorite beach I visited.

The beach was stunning and very easy to get to. The rest of the hike was also pretty nice and very easy.

Great trial although GPS and google are a necessity.Fairly easy even for a novice hiker.
The map with AllTrails is very helpful

Nice hike through the forest. Lots of tree roots and rocks so bring hiking shoes. Trail is not marked too well.
