The first part of the trail from the parking area to the intersection with the power line road is my favorite trail on this road. It meanders through several kipukas where you can see several endemic species of birds. The kipukas also provide shade and a magical experience as you walk through the old Koa and o’hia forests. You also walk through a few meadows. Nice! Once you get to the powerline road the shade is limited and the surface you are walking on is somewhat rocky. The worst part is the last .8 mile—the trail follows the busy highway with cars speeding by at 70 mph. Unnerving! I suggest you turn back at the powerline road and walk the forested path back the way you came.

This is not a hike but it is a pretty Falls. You cannot get down to the actual water. There are rails to prevent that.

Okay falls, no hiking allowed

Not very special. I guess it most rain a lot in order to make this river looking boiling.

No a hike, just a parking lot with a waterfall.

Amazing. looks like a popular access point for swimming at the base of the falls. Lots of locals at the bridge where everyone parked. you can hike past where the swimming hole is which takes you up to the falls you see from the bridge. if you take overgrown trails to the right off the main path you'll find a smaller set of falls. lovely hike, lots of careful climbing. I could see how someone can surprise you on this trail. A local hiker covered in tribal tats and carrying a backpack crossed paths with me while sitting at the edge of a tidepool. Was a Friendly type.

Absolutely beautiful. I wouldn’t consider it as much of a hike as it is a lookout. That said, worth the stop. Please stay on the main trail, as you could be fined for walking off, but more importantly it keeps you and the local ecosystem safe. The right is wheelchair friendly, the left requires stairs (the right is a better view of the falls anyways). There is a bathroom and seems highly trafficked, but it was easy for us to take pictures around the people.

Beautiful overlook. This is a two level overlook - there is no trail at all.

Easy waterfall, just walk out of the parking lot to see it. Cool Banyan trees at the top of the falls.

Quick and Easy walk with nice view of the fall and surrounding

Not hike - just a lookout point. You’ll see the beautiful rainbows if you arrive in the morning, when the sun is behind you.

Beautiful area & local folklore of the river explained on boards. Hiking area closed is though.

5/27/2018-Not much of a hike, it’s more like a short walk. The parking lot is rather small considering the number of visitors and buses that park there.

5/26/2018-It wasn’t a lazy river today! However not enough rain has fallen lately to get it to really boil either. Still, we enjoyed our visit!

It had been dry for a week so nothing really to see. Just peekaboo views of the river and the pots I imagine would have been really cool the day we left since it had rained for 24 hrs. It looks like there used to be a trail that would give you better views that was closed off.

The trail is hard to see and is across the street on the far side of the bridge. It's quite bushy and you can find you way ok. It skirts the river and one misstep could put you in the drink.

The falls are pretty. There is no real hike here although maybe in days past. All side trails towards the river were closed off with no entry permitted. I heeded the signs and did not go beyond the overlook. Same with Boiling pots.

Cool falls. Seems like it rains all the time in Hilo though. Not a hike...you get out of your car and walk a path up to the overlook. Kid friendly, even saw some older people with canes making the walk up the rock path.

The trail is not that accurate. Cross the bridge and park off the road and take the small trail going up the hill towards the waterfall. Do not take the trail going under the bridge

Best view of the day!

Please don't "climb over the rocks" to get a better view. We have had rain here everyday for over a month. I work across the street- the river is fast and high.

Quick and easy view. Not really a hike at all. Except to go up the stairs to see it from the top.

I'm sure this is a beautiful trail, but I also don't want to get abducted while trying to see it.

I was about to begin the trail with my mom, when a car pulled over by where I was parked and the two locals inside kindly advised us against it. The man told us that a young man had been abducted in the last few weeks while hiking this trail, and although the views were lovely, that it was the type of area where people could hide and catch you if you weren't well-guarded. He mentioned that a group or burly-looking guy could probably manage, but not two ladies. Shame to be a woman at times like these.

Paying it forward - hopefully no one else gets hurt here.

Beautiful lookout over the falls! The lookout is really close to the parking lot, so not really a hike. You can head up a staircase and climb over some rocks to see the falls from the top, I would definitely recommend doing that.

Amazing waterfalls! Water drops down almost vertically.

So much to see! After you stop at the overload to see the waterfall, drive on past the the actual lookout and park at the next pull off area on the left. Cross the road into the wooden area...unbelievable trees-beyond description! Excellent for kids (& adults) to play on. Continue on through a narrow pathway to find a path to a swimming area-gorgeous! You can't see the waterfall from here. In fact, it was all so beautiful, we forgot to go back to see the waterfall but didn't even care.

Not a hike an overlook and you can take the hidden trails to the tide pools.

A little muddy and overgrown. Some lookouts aren’t solid ground so look before stepping. Beautiful at the top!
