The drive to key west is beautiful, lots of great ocean view. Beware of the traffic on the weekend; at times it will be bumper to bumper. The 3 hour trip is worth it and at the end of the trail you can actually see the island of Cuba( as long as there is no clouds in the sky).

The Overseas Highway consists of 42 bridges of various lengths connecting the many scenic keys along its 113 mile length. The longest is the famous Seven Mile Bridge, which separates the Middle Keys from the Lower Keys and is the largest segmental bridge in the world. There are five regions in the Keys (Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West). I have made it is as far as Islamorada. I am very much looking forward to my next opportunity to visit South Florida so I can complete the trip to Key West and the Conch Republic…as well as to extend the experience with a ferry excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park (70 miles past Key West).

For $25.00, you get all the mosquitos you want and if you go in the morning after it rain you have a better chance of seeing the wild life.

great, bring mosquito spray. also good and drink, nothing till flamingo

Nice place to visit. Love it.

This another must do scenic drive that our country has to offer. From Florida City all the way to the southern most point in the U.S.A., this drive is like no other. The bridges from Key to Key are endless it seems. I'm surprised again that no one has reviewed this incredible drive to Key West. I had always wanted to go to Key West, but would only do it if I could drive. I would go again in a minute. And Key West is a fun town to hang out in for a few days too. So if you ever find yourself in South Florida, this is a worthwhile adventure!!

I visited on Thanksgiving weekend last year, driving from the east entrance all the way down to Flamingo and back. It was a beautiful day, and I got out on the trails and boardwalks in many locations along the park road. Happily, I was able to see lots of wildlife (gators, turtles, deer, egrets, herons, anhingas, osprey and a few huge spiders...and also happily, no snakes). I soon realized that it wasn't far enough into the colder months to significantly limit the often relentless mosquitoes, particularly in the southern part of the park. I still was able to thoroughly enjoy my visit however.

Did this years ago and again last December. I am not really into the reptiles, but we did not see anything last time anyway.

I have done this drive many times and I must agree with Christine; sometimes you see a lot of wild life and sometimes nothing.

I have driven this route many, many times and at different time of the day and night. Sometimes you see a lot, and sometimes you don't. Keep your eyes open for deer, turtles, gators, snakes, herons, egrets, anhingas, cormorants, kingfishers and hawks. The Everglades are subtle. Don't expect any huge "oohs" and "ahhs" like the Grand Canyon. Beautiful times to see it are sunrise and sunset. If skeeters scare you, go in the winter and they won't be bad at all (though Flamingo seems to always have plenty of 'em!) . Don't forget to stop at the Ernest Coe visitor center at the entrance...nice gift shop, restrooms and informative displays. Oh, and if you go all the way down to Flamingo, look for tarpon and manatees in the basin! Hurricane Andrew destroyed the rental cabins that used to be there, as well as a restaurant and lodge.

This is a very interesting drive, but stay in the car. We saw owls, alligators, cormorants, egrets, and herons. An alligator warming himself in the road hissed at the car and then slipped into the water; he moved so fast we didn't even see where he went in. The mosquitoes were so thick they were like a fog; they got into the car and buzzed us for the rest of the drive :p
