Not really a hike but more or less a woodland walking trail next to a fully operational historical site... gift shop ,icecream and restrooms next to the castle. You can take a tour for $6 per adult for the castle portion (worth it) or watch a free little movie near with admission area. Pretty neat in all honesty. Awesome views of the water along the outside of the castle.

Great water falls.

Great spot & view. Kids love it. Places to sit on the rocks both at the bottom and the top of the falls. Trails and steps around are easy access. One our favorite places to go

This is an easy dog friendly and family friendly hike. It's a short 2.1 mile hike that is so green and lush in May that it makes one think that they are in Ireland. The parking at the trail head is very limited. We found room for 1 car only!! See included Photos. The plaque on the huge boulder near the end of the hike was a nice touch.

Hiked this on a sunny 41 degree day. Trail is well marked with blue blazes. Several stream crossings with well-placed stones. I am 67, wife is 66 and we found this to be enjoyable. It's more than just a walk in the woods, but not overly strenuous. Some nice canopies of tall laurel. Road to parking lot is heavily rutted, so we parked on River Road and hiked in the short distance to the trailhead. Lots of trees were down from winter storms but it was obvious that the preserve managers had been there clearing the trail.

Go after a decent rain to see the Falls at their best. Really beautiful surrounding area

Awesome hike, great all day adventure. Steep hills reaching the halfway mark and then pretty steady easy incline all the way to the end

easy trail. good views. the castle was closed when we went.

Perfect hiking weather the day we chose to hike this well marked trail. Challenging yet fun trail. Was surprised that we did not see another hiker the entire trek. Well worth checking the trail system out.

We picked a perfect day to hike this trail. The trail is well marked but you need to pay attention due to several intersecting trails. We did the trail in 4 hours and 15 minutes. We did not see another soul during the trip,

Cool place

backpacking

Backpacked through this in one day. My original intention was to use this as a testing ground to see how well I'd do with backpacking. For a first time hike with an extra 40lbs worth of backpack, I'd say it was difficult. Without the added weight I would guess that this would have been a fairly easy trail. There is a long portion of gravel road in the middle that does get a little boring, but for what I wanted to learn I'd say this was an excellent hike.

I wish I could give this a 3.5 stars. It's nice, not great, no outstanding features but the fern beds everywhere are nice. You're also very unlikely to see anyone else while you're out there.

Gillette Castle state park is a nice place to visit and hike. You can tour the Castle home then hike the trails. Well worth seeing the building.
Our hike followed the personnel mini railroad that Gillette built, he was an actor who made big money in the early 1900's.
There are many trails on the property, some go down to the CT river, others follow the old RR bed and others wind around the property.
I always like following the RR bed trail. To each there own.
Oh yes, the views from the Castle are amazing of the CT river and beyond!
Well worth it for this alone. Enjoy.

We came the week before the museum and castle were open for the summer, so I can't speak to those, but the trails were sub par. They mostly just intersect across a small section of woods. There's a good view of the river and the castle is cool on the outside. I wouldn't recommend here for the hiking.

Really easy and had a great view.

Beautiful view, lovely place to go see, but it's not so much of a hike, when you drive up you see the building right away it wasn't as exciting to just see it and walk away

This is a very scenic loop. I'm not sure how I would rate the difficulty as although you do start off going downhill to a view of the pond (and often interesting bird life within) most of the last two thirds is all uphill of varying degrees, through some beautiful woodlands. I can push through this in an hour at a fast pace, but if I am being more leisurely, this is typically more like an hour and a half. It is a well marked trail with occasional nature facts posted, but some parts can be swampy or overgrown depending on the season. And unless you have a solid, high riding car, forget about going into the parking lot; its a rutted off roading adventure. Its hard to find from the street.

Short, easy trails that are usually full of people and children. The trails in the woods are not well marked. When I feel like a quick stroll it's nice with some lovely views. But it's not great when my dogs and I have serious energy to burn, or when I don't feel like company.
