Definitely some challenging incline areas for true novices. We did the loop clockwise & towards the end, there were some areas not clearly marked due to trees falling, but that was a challenge my kids enjoyed! Also some boggy/wet areas but those will dry out in due time.

Hiked this on a sunny 41 degree day. Trail is well marked with blue blazes. Several stream crossings with well-placed stones. I am 67, wife is 66 and we found this to be enjoyable. It's more than just a walk in the woods, but not overly strenuous. Some nice canopies of tall laurel. Road to parking lot is heavily rutted, so we parked on River Road and hiked in the short distance to the trailhead. Lots of trees were down from winter storms but it was obvious that the preserve managers had been there clearing the trail.

Go after a decent rain to see the Falls at their best. Really beautiful surrounding area

Beautiful trail series with waterfall, bridges, and skyline views. Took a few questionable turns but made it back to original trail. 4.2 miles overall with extra turns. Trails need some updating and clearing for the warm weather, but otherwise this is an absolute must!

Awesome hike, great all day adventure. Steep hills reaching the halfway mark and then pretty steady easy incline all the way to the end

Nice trail with some moderate challenges, especially along the river bank. Great vista view on clear days. Note: For best route following, do NOT use the park's orange blazes as they only cover the main route - not the more interesting hike.

easy trail. good views. the castle was closed when we went.

Beautiful. We made a few short cuts, and went to the waterfalls from the parking lot at the end.
Really nice trail.

Nice family hike with family and dog. Waterfall was the best park. Busy, popular spot. Nice for picnics too.

Perfect hiking weather the day we chose to hike this well marked trail. Challenging yet fun trail. Was surprised that we did not see another hiker the entire trek. Well worth checking the trail system out.

The trail wasn't well marked, but it was beautiful in the snow.

Great view of the river below when the leaves are gone.

Ideal for a short hike. The trails are not marked too clearly at times but lots of foliage and great views.

This place is gorgeous! I loved it all. Trails well marked, amazing waterfall! Highly recommend!

Great day!

We picked a perfect day to hike this trail. The trail is well marked but you need to pay attention due to several intersecting trails. We did the trail in 4 hours and 15 minutes. We did not see another soul during the trip,

Absolutely lovely

Very busy

The orange trail is good for hiking.. specially the steep climbing of devils oven ..

Was more slick then I anticipated, especially the scramble up the hill to the Devil's Oven. Markers for the first mile or so on the loop if you go clockwise are almost nonexistent.

fun trail , many variations if you want it to be longer, takes about 30 mins of a moderately steep climb to get to the view .. saw lots of wild life taking some side trails back!

Cool place

Too many 3-minute hikers, noise, and picnic pieces. Skip unless winter.

The red trail takes you to the waterfall and overlook - the two must-sees here.

backpacking

Backpacked through this in one day. My original intention was to use this as a testing ground to see how well I'd do with backpacking. For a first time hike with an extra 40lbs worth of backpack, I'd say it was difficult. Without the added weight I would guess that this would have been a fairly easy trail. There is a long portion of gravel road in the middle that does get a little boring, but for what I wanted to learn I'd say this was an excellent hike.

I wish I could give this a 3.5 stars. It's nice, not great, no outstanding features but the fern beds everywhere are nice. You're also very unlikely to see anyone else while you're out there.

Our family followed the white trail to the red trail. A couple of semi-challenging inclines for kids and out of shape mommies. Beautiful scenery and water sounds.

Well marked trail. There are some steep areas on the trail that would be hard for younger kids.

Gillette Castle state park is a nice place to visit and hike. You can tour the Castle home then hike the trails. Well worth seeing the building.
Our hike followed the personnel mini railroad that Gillette built, he was an actor who made big money in the early 1900's.
There are many trails on the property, some go down to the CT river, others follow the old RR bed and others wind around the property.
I always like following the RR bed trail. To each there own.
Oh yes, the views from the Castle are amazing of the CT river and beyond!
Well worth it for this alone. Enjoy.

This is a gorgeous state park with trails ranging from easy to the top end of moderate for the more adventurous. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone!
