Explore the most popular birding trails in Connecticut with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Nice, well traveled trail, clean and easy to follow. Very steep incline in the beginning which leads me to believe why it is marked moderately hard. A lot of people with dogs off the leash so it would be hard for birding but otherwise a great day hike.

This was a truly beautiful hike. I started at the Mashamoquet Meadow Trail and first made my way to the Ledge Trail, then went all the way up to the Grassland Bird Conservation area. It was beautiful rolling hills of meadows and fields, with some wetlands and wooded trails mixed in. Outstanding views. Haven't seen anywhere else in CT like it.

great day out. we took out time and did almost eight miles. nice scenery.

Easy trail around the reservoir. Felt safe by myself.

Beautiful hike...muddy streams in some spots. Our two girls (11 & 12) did fine though.

poorly maintained! poorly marked! broken glass beer cans. don't waste your time!

This is a great place for a small east hike. There is a trail that loops around the lake. You can go kayaking, fishing mountain biking and picnics there. There are also back trails for hiking. One will bring you to the top of West Rock, where you can see over New Haven. Another trail will bring you to baldwi drive which is a paved road that was closed years ago but it's still a hiking trail. Another trail will bring you to Paradise Preserve aka "The field of Dreams". please not the state cut down that big tree at the field of dreams two years ago. I hike Lake Wintergreen daily,so i know it by heart.

some of the trails that break off this loop could use some love, but it's a beautiful short hike.

starting off at trail head ended up pushing/carrying bike to top of hill. what appeared to be a bridge has been wiped out and will eventually need fixing. once on the main loop ride was nice plenty of gradual drops and only a few ups to speak of. careful on back side as there is a couple trees that trail goes through that take some navigating, and finally the return back to trail head was quick all downhill. ended up walking part of it do to steepness and bridge being out. overall good 40min ride.

Besides the goregous waterfall, the trail was filled with mosquitos and spider webs. broken down trees blocking the paths. Nothing is regards to a view besides the waterfall.

Everything was great, just an absurd amount of gnats constantly in your face. Trail was easy and beautiful. A few spots to get down to the water. Will definitely be going back with my dog!

The Lantern Hill trail is perfect for a first foray into hiking. The trails are clearly marked and an hour in the forest passes very quickly and pleasurably.

Used to run in these trails in the late 90s early 2000s. Came back for the first time in years and it didn't disappoint. the kids loved it. we will definitely be back.

July 2018. Very buggy. overgrown Trails with lots of trees and branches down, definitely not marked as previous reviewers have mentioned. however, it is pretty and quiet here.

Not a bad hike.

River views very nice.

Beautiful trail with great summit views. I wouldn’t call this a moderate hike but it definitely gets your heart rate up.

Great hike. Started at West Lane entrance. Went left at fork and took Blue/Red trail to Blue trail. Nice scenes. Great peak. Took Blue up to Blue/Yellow and cut back across East to starting point. AllTrails said we hiked 4.3 miles and burned 1431 calories. NICE. Definitely got a great workout. Would highly recommend. Can't wait to go back and do full loop.

Easy trail that is basically a road except for the upper vista connector. Lower vista has better views. Both vistas need to be cut back. Picnic tables everywhere. Nice pond for the dogs to swim in.

A really awesome trail with great views. It would certainly be a 5 star review if the trails were marked better. Very easy to get lost. I have The AllTrails Pro and it bailed us out a couple of times.

Great run! I would recommend starting counterclockwise.

overgrown bushes on trail, not really passable:(

First the positives. There are some beautiful spots throughout this hike. I saw 3 different species of butterfly and all sorts of wild flowers, apple trees, and grapevine. There are places you can sit and enjoy nature's splendor. Most of the hike is clearly labeled. The negatives. Part of the hike is very rocky, trees are down and there isn't a clear path. I took my mother (who has some slight knee problems) and she had a hard time with this hike. Also unless your dog is an experienced hiker I wouldn't recommend this hike for them.

This is a meet up spot for men. Not family friendly. Wish it was because it’s a very nice trail. We did it but were very uncomfortable when we returned to the parking lot. I googled around and confirmed what I thought was going on.

Great view, scenic area. Nice trail.

Easy, short (1.5 hrs tops) for fast paced hikers, slow incline, light blue trail overlooks Dawson lake otherwise route is mostly below tree line / flat

My dog and I went on this hike two days ago. I would definitely say this hike it more of a beginner one than a moderate one, for the terrain. For those looking to hike it, definitely download the map before you do. There were a few times a couple trails intersected and I was thankful for the map. I do have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the purple trail to the river. The river spot is really pretty and seems perfect for a picnic. I didn't enjoy the red trail as much, so next time I'll probably take the purple to the water and back to the parking lot. The trails were the best I've been on so far, super maintained and really well marked!

Beautiful place. I took a left on to a single track trail after a few hundred feet of gravel trail. It paralleled the highlighted rout above and let to the same tower lookout. Then continued on the m&m trail to Hartford rez no 6 for a swim!
