I actually drove Medano Pass in Chevrolet Suburban 12 years ago. the sand dune portion was tricky in that vehicle. Looking forward to driving it in a RZR.

Lovely hike with lots of trees. Only had time for about two miles in. Water along the trail was perfect for the dog. One tick spotted.

One of my favorites. Good Jeep trail with great views. Number of water crossings before dropping into Sand Dunes. We entered from Westcliffe side and then came back.

We had a great hike, only saw a few others along the way and did not have any tick problems. We took precautions - tick spray, hair tucked into hats, long pants. Checked ourselves, brushed our hair before getting into car. It's truly a beautiful hike and I would recommend it.

Do not hike this tail. TICK WARNING!! Consider yourself warned.. iMay 25-27th 2017 we dispersed camped pretty close to the trailhead. Ticks were decently bad camping. Much worse in the trail. If you want to be grooming g yourself and dogs for days after for ticks then go ahead and hike it!

We did this hike on May 24th, 2017; a year with unusual snow load for this area. Therefore this was a "mud season" hike and everything was still dormant. The amount of pine trees, which had died due to the beetle kill made this trail look really trist. Before we ran into the snow banks higher up, there was a rather long section of scree covering the trail, much like one would encounter above tree line on 14ers. This was very hard on our older dog! This trail also holds two records for us: we have NEVER seen that many moose droppings and moose signs in our lives (we spend most of our time outdoors), and we have never encountered more ticks in our lives. Since this was a cold day and mud season, we did not bring bug spray (our fault). By the time we got back to our camp, we plucked over 50 ticks from ourselves, our dogs, inside and outside our backpacks. Thankfully our dogs are treated with Frontline, but several ticks still attached before they died off. I felt a bite on my neck and within the second it took me to grab the tick, it had already attached! We spent hours to "groom" EVERYTHING, and still found more ticks the next day. WE WILL NEVER SET FOOT ON THAT TRAIL AGAIN!

Medano Pass was an awesome way to drop into great sand dunes!

Starvation creek was amazing! We were literally the only people on the whole trail yesterday. It is pristine, beautiful, and a fairly easy hike.
We forgot big spray and regretted it as there were tons of ticks -- make sure to bring some! Also, use a 4x4 or AWD SUV to get there- road is rough.

Short hike with a beautiful view. The first part parallels i-84 for a while then cuts up. Pretty steep going down, not difficult but may be harder with little kids or if it's wet out.

Starvation creek is a great alternative to the silver creek descent. Its prehistoric feeling, tight in spots winding through trees, and fast. This is a must do option after riding the "classic" monarch crest trail. The only bummer is you miss out on rainbow trail but its quicker if your pressed for time for some reason. Bottom line........ Do it.
