Good hike, one creek is flowing good so you have to go up and around, lots of water running down parts of the trail. Lots of snow still but a lot of trail marking footprints to help out. Was a splashing good time!

Spent one night at Crater Lake 5.27.20 I would give the trail a few more weeks to thaw out unless you don’t mind post holing. One section of trail about a half mile from the lake got a little tricky due to snow pack. Was nice having the trail and lake to ourselves. Wear gators, bring gps and trekking poles. The trail is obvious for the most part with our tracks in the snow.

A few patch’s of snow towards the top with a sprinkling of mud, amazing views

I hiked to Crater Lake during the summer of 1973 and spent 11 days there with a friend. The scenery was spectacular. Most memorable were the hikes under the moonlight toward the saddle at the top of the ridge overlooking the Animas River Valley. The air at that altitude is so clear that you could clearly see the other side of the valley, about 6 miles away. The hike getting there was not easy, with gear for 11 days, but the trip stands out as a highlight of my life. Also, we did not catch any fish in this high mountain lake.

Gorgeous trail at every turn! About 3 miles up is when the snow starts to appear. I only hiked 6 miles in, stopping at the base of the steep rocky section because it was too snowy. Still an amazing day hike, even if weather doesn’t permit the summit!

Snow packed 1/4 mile into trial. Need spikes if headed up and GPS. Looking forward to returning soon.

enjoyed it. we only made it to the base of the rocky spots, we started too late in the day. looking forward to the challenge of climbing to the top, but I think I'd rather go with a guide.

Excellent fall hike. Round trip to Crater Lake is 11.7 miles. Crater Lake is a beautiful alpine lake under towering peaks. Took us 7 hours including a 20 minute lunch stop at the lake (we are in our 60’s and live at 500 feet elevation). Lots of great views along the way. About half of the hike is rocky with the other half a combination of sand and pine needles. Lots of horse manure to dodge along the trail. We didn’t see any other hikers. Had the trail to ourselves.

Oct 11. Dry trail conditions Amazing views above tree line all the way! Windy and cold close to peak. Very steep near the top. I live at 8k and frequently hike steep trails, but the altitude on this trail from American Basin slowed me down. I’d like to come back when wildflowers are in bloom.

I only did the first 3.5/4 miles of the trail, but the leaves are gorgeous right now! I highly recommend getting out there in the next couple days if you can!

I hiked this trial the first week of October when the aspen colors were at their peak. The views of the snow capped mountains were amazing. The trail, which is really more of a service road, follows the animas river from Howardsville to Middleton. I was fly fishing along the way and caught several small brook tout about 6-8 inches. There are also several beaver dams visible in the river along the route. There are a lot of mine tailings along the trail which you have to walk through making the path rocky is areas. Abandoned mine buildings are visible along the trail.

This trek will not disappoint. My first 14er, and it was a fun experience. Be prepared for frigid and windy conditions as you approach the ridge line.

Not sure why it’s listed as hard. Very easy if you know how to drive and you’re not in a Toyota RAV4. Scenic. Fun inclines. It attracts people who don’t have trail knowledge or manners.

We parked way down below the 2wd parking to make this a 7.5 mile hike round trip. Conditions perfect - be prepared for walking on lots of rock and pulling yourself up on a cable. Not technical but there was ice on the rocks. A favorite destination.

My favorite 14er so far! It was a beautiful day yesterday and I had such a great hike. The trail is well defined and a stop at Lake Sloan is a must. We came in from Lake City and the road is still rough in some spots, but manageable.

I hiked up this, 5 miles of DH on engineer

Camped on the side of this road, absolutely wonderful scenery

Hiked this 8/20/2019. The trail is well-groomed, starting out in forest with switchbacks, then loose forests and finally into meadows. There are two smaller up-and-down bits that are not especially challenging before the final push. One section of the trail had lots of blowdowns—a little puzzling how this happened but I imagine it was pretty spectacular whatever it was. I did have a swim and though it was a little chilly getting in it was fine after you take the plunge (ha ha). Very few people on the trail, mostly just at the lake. If the elevation gain wasn’t super strenuous it was 11.6 miles by my tracker.
