Beautiful hike! Definitely needed snowshoes/spikes the whole way and the trail is difficult to follow. We followed the trail on the app to point us in the right direction since there were no footprints or signs to follow. Round trip it was 8.4 miles (not 7) and was hard but view was beautiful! Snow the whole way and had steep rocks to hike over.

Trail is snowy but doable. It’s a good hike, the views are great at the end. Although, the “end” of the trail on AllTrails isn’t truly the end when you’re hiking, you could continue if you want and make it longer.

Hard hike but beautiful views! Make sure you have gps cuz it’s easy to get off course at the avalanche.

Hiked a few weeks ago and it was beautiful. There is a section of the hiking path that was destroyed by last season's avalanche. When tou get to that section, you will divert up and around the fallen trees. Still able to complete the hike though!

Saturday was a beautiful day to explore this trail. Great temperatures and the sky was so blue in contrast with the green and yellow foliage. For my first hike of the trail I’d say it was rather well marked and in good shape. As has been indicated, the 2nd avalanche area was a bit of a challenge but manageable. I enjoyed walking along the stream and hearing the little waterfalls for a majority of the lower hike. It is strenuous in several spots but I’d put it on the lower end of difficult .. hard but not crazy hard. The lakes .. wow .. I could have stayed there all day soaking in the view. There is plenty of lake side spots to have a bite to eat and not really see another soul. The drive down from I-70 was amazing .. the yellow aspens were such a wonderful start to the hike. The roads off of 24 were in good shape, but I’d imagine at other times of the year they would be a problem. I was glad to have a SUV but a car (rental) would be fine. Watch your speed as the ruts and rocks can sneak up on you in the shadows. This is definitely a trail I’d recommend.

Beautiful trail. Challenging scramble to top of fancy peak then it mellows out

I went up the Fancy side first and glad I did. The views really wowed in this direction. Finished in 4 hours but I was trying to move quickly and didn't stop for any period of time. Would definitely recommend planning for 6 so there's plenty of time to stop and enjoy.

Start at the Fancy Lake Trailhead. Uphill climb thru forest, at about a mile cross Fancy Creek which will lead to Fancy Lake. from Fancy Lake it is a difficult and rocky scramble up to Fancy Pass. You are rewarded with amazing views both directions. Continue to follow the trail down and then up to the Missouri Lakes Pass where you are again rewarded with great views down to the lakes. An avalanche has downed 100s of trees in an area shortly after leaving the lakes. Stay to the left to get thru this area. You will end up at the Missouri Lakes Trailhead in the same parking lot where you started.

I'm giving this hike 4 stars because although it's very beautiful there needs to be better signage at Fancy Lake that indicates where to go back down to the trailhead. I ended up unknowingly going do French Creek thinking it was Fancy Creek, and it added an extra hour plus to my hike, and that was only because I started running once I realized I was in a different part of the valley from the beginning. There's plenty of signage up there, but it's all useless advertisements and trail recognition that doesn't help at all. Make sure you take the trail that goes around the lake to continue the Fancy Creek trail if you're coming down to Fancy Lake!

was great, very pretty a lot of lakes kinda difficult. beware of the avalanche

Beautiful hike. Little altitude gain. Lots of shade. Well marked and easy to follow! Great for the dogs. (Easy on their feet, bring water though for the pups)! Some colors changing on the back half of the hike when you get towards the valley. Mostly you’re in the trees, the hike is just missing scenic overlooks or a spot for lunch with a great view.

I did the whole loop counterclockwise, up Fancy pass first then down Missouri Lakes. I was told that was the correct way to go, a lot more downhill after the pass. I got here around 12pm on a Sunday, I passed 8 people the entire loop. The avalanche area isn’t bad, the trail made is easy to follow it just goes up & around a bit. This is a great trail, from waterfalls to the pass, the lakes & even the remnants of avalanche was fascinating to me. It took me 5 hours and 45 min but I took my time & stopped to take plenty of pictures and had lunch. My feet started to hurt the last mile, and in total it was over 10 miles.

This was an amazing hike. We hiked up fancy pass and down Missouri Lakes. It’s beautiful with views every step of the way. We think it’s a little over 9 miles.

Avalanche field is mostly clear but we took a higher route above it. My friends and I did a full loop from Missouri lake and up and over Missouri and Fancy passes to Fancy lake then back down to my truck which we highly recommend if you feel inclined! Trail is definitely not moderate the 3 of us we have lived locally for almost a decade collectively and felt it was not for those who are not that experienced. Took us 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete the full loop

Gorgeous. Make sure to start at Fancy trailhead, you see the best views this way. Definitely around 11 miles.

Keep following the trail downhill past the planned end about .2 miles to a wide opening with great views of holy Cross and surrounding ranges

Hiked this trail this past weekend and it was gorgeous. No bugs. There were two avalanche spots as indicated by others - the second was intense but definitely passable. There were some large fallen logs and trees you'll need to semi climb carefully maneuver over. I'm 5'2" so there were a couple spots I used all hands and feet, but found still, nothing hard.

Very challenging awesome at night

We started at the Fancy Pass Trailhead and ended at the Missouri Lake trailhead. This trail is amazing and I definitely recommend it for those who enjoy “loop” hikes with a new view the entire time. We only saw a couple of other hikers the entire trip and the weather was beautiful and basically no bugs. The hike up Fancy Pass was not terribly hard, a little snowfield and scree scrambling towards the top, but the views were phenomenal. The hike down to Missouri Lakes and up again very easy and the lakes are really a sight to see. There are still wildflowers. However, the avalanche debris is NO JOKE. You definitely have to do some scrambling to get through the downed trees (but is very cool seeing the effects of nature)! The rest of the way was cake. I wasn’t sure what to expect for distance (between 8-12 miles??) but the Garmin clocked 9.4 miles RT and the Apple Watch clocked 10.2 miles RT. Overall, highly recommend.

amazing views! highly recommend ..

This trail was gorgeous! Plenty of climbing and moderate walking as well. The alpine lakes were so beautiful and the wildflowers stunning. We had read other reviews about the trail being out due to avalanche area, but we found the alternative trail to the right up-mountain was well marked and easy. The climb to the pass past the last lake was well worth the view. Took us about 5.5 hours with breaks and snacks.
