A wonderful trail! Slightly longer than what AllTrails says, but worth every step. One of the best we’ve ever tackled.

Loved this trail! It’s uphill for 3/4 of the way, but the lake at the end was worth it. We hiked during a light rain - trail was slippery with mud as a result, but manageable.

Great little hike with plenty of Aspen and Pine views.

Had a great hike! Some steep parts, over all it was easy. Watch the weather, as we left there was hail, no problem for us, but some people were hiking in t-shirts and sneakers.

Loved this easy hike through majestic aspen groves! The lake (pond) is beautiful!

Similar to comments below, the mileage is wrong on All Trails ... It’s nearly 2 miles longer round trip. But wow - what a breathtaking hike!!! There are panoramas and landscapes in clear view throughout 95 percent of the hike, along with unforgettable rock formations and a “key hole” formation than indicates you’re more than halfway to the lake. We hike regularly, and it took about 2:30 to the lake and 1:45 back with some light jogging on the return. Be sure to get out early if you’re doing a day hike (ideally by 7 a.m). Storms routinely roll in by 1 p.m. This is a stunning and underutilized hike you will never forget. We’ll be back!

My recorder shows 5.2 miles so unless the All Trails took short cuts, their distance is short(4.4 miles). Beautiful lake, worth the difficult hike. We backpacked in with enough gear for 2 nights. Had a trout dinner both nights. She said she would do it again even though it was “brutal”. She carried about 35 lbs on her back so I’m proud of her. Heard some coyotes yelping, saw a lot of deer, a marmot, and some beautiful birds. So far, my favorite hike in the Pagosa Springs area.

Nice, easy trail. Has a little climb at the beginning. Beautiful mature aspen groves. The lake is very cloudy, muddy looking, (from mineral runoff?), guess that's where it got it's name. We were the second vehicle there at 8am, probably saw 25 people by the time we left a couple hours later.

The climb at the beginning of the trail until about 3 miles in is significant - about 2500ft of vertical. I completed this trail with my wife and dogs on 7/19/18 and the trail was easy to follow and had been cleared. The scenery is amazing once over 11,250ft - this has to be one of my favorite hikes in Southern Colorado. Highly recommended.

We loved this hike. You climb up and hike through an Aspen Grove then end up at the lake which is beautiful. There are are several Creek crossings but they are easily crossed.

loved this trail, my wife and I hiked out and had lunch by the lake. There are a few steep spots, but not too difficult. the lake is up against some beautiful mountains.

This is beautiful. Wildflowers, aspen trees, mountain views... can’t ask for any more! We hiked even though it was raining and it was still worth it. Even saw some baby ducklings at the lake!

Great hike! Did this hike 20 years ago with the children, still just as pretty. There are some awesome awesome aspen groves along the upper portion of the route.

7/2 seems to be lightly trafficked and not particularly beautiful/noteworthy until you start to approach tree line which I'd say is about halfway. From there you've big views with lots of flowers all the way down to the lake. Overall great hike disappointed I only just found it. Took 4.5 hours there and back. Road in is rough but 4x4 not required.

Always up going out, but worth the hike. Keep telling yourself it’s all down hill on the way back. Would be great for a one night stay with stars overhead.

Drove up in my wife’s minivan. No problem. Consistent climb from start. Trail clear. Once on ridge views are simply unbeatable. Made it to lake in 1:20. Back to car in 2:20 total. Wasn’t hammering, but worked hard. Great views, easy access. Highly recommend.

Great trail well maintained , opens to a beautiful patch of aspen ends with a really great view of the lake - peaceful. We’ll do it again must be great in the fall.

Amazing wildflowers.

June 27- I only hiked 5.6 miles, but it was beautiful! Downed trees have been cleared from the trail. The first 2.8 miles is almost all uphill, but it was not terribly steep. I saw a great variety of wildflowers. Parts of the trail are in the open and parts go through pine and aspen forest. Also some interesting rock formations. The last 2 miles of the drive up to the trailhead was quite rough. I made it okay in my SUV, but 4 wheel drive would have been better.

Great trail! We did this with a toddler (mostly carried the toddler) and a 6 year old. The lake was a beautiful spot to enjoy some water before making the trek back down.

This is a beautiful trail. When there is average snowfall the road will not open until the first week of June, however it is already open for 2018. Parts of the trail are a bit steep, overall it is not too difficult. The trail is 1/2 mile to the lake. You are at about 9,500 feet in elevation.

Great easy trail, the first portion is kind of steep but opens into a patch of aspen trees. Very easy and the lake is beautiful. Bring big spray, lots of mosquitos near the lake.

Hiked this trail on 5/9, absolutely amazing hike! The hike there is beautiful and then of course the lake itself is almost surreal.

The trail looked as if no one had been on it yet this year. It’s a more difficult hike with lots of snow, fallen trees on the path, and streams to cross. I would recommend waiting until late summer to do this hike. We barely made it 2 miles when the trail was completely lost. Lots of fresh bear tracks as well.

We wanted to do this trail but found a road closed sign when we came to junction close to trail. We went ahead and walked the closed road which had : ft of snow. We enjoyed the walk and the beautiful scenery. We did not make it all the way to the official trail.

This trail was beautiful - some parts were steep and rocky but it really leveled out and all the creeks were lovely on the way to the lake. Easily marked.

We took our two year old on this trail. It is pretty easy, steep in some spots and just long enough. Really beautiful!
