This is a 26 mile route from Lake City, CO to just south of Ouray. It took me 3;47. The eastern portion climbs slowly and is relatively easy with multiple abandoned mines and beautiful vistas. the pass tops out at 12,800 feet then climbs further as you head west. The western portion is steep in places, full of bare rock and boulders, and very treacherous. There are narrow portions with steep drop offs, at least a dozen hairpin turns, and many sharp rocks. My jeep Grand Cherokee bottomed out at least a dozen times.
My recommendations:
4 wheel drive low is absolutely essential
Do not drive the western portion of this road if there has been any rain. It gets very slippery.
High road clearance with short wheel base and low center of gravity would be ideal.

Definitely one of my favorite passes in Colorado. I lived there for about 7 years and have traveled over many. This one is not difficult at all with the exception of a spot or three. A must is a side trip from Camp Bird to the west up to the base of Mt Sneffels and the high alpine lakes there. IF your lucky and are there end of July early August you might catch the wildflower explosion. On a good snow pack year it might not be clear until end of July. On July 4th, they have the July 4th Ski Race at summit of the pass. Fun event.

Fairly easy trail but one of our favorites in the area. We did it in a stock jeep unlimited sport with no problems. Great views. Passes by the waterfall they use in the Coors commercials.

Great trail lots to see not very hard, some off angle places that want to take it slow, I almost rolled my Jeep due to my own ignorance of playing around

This IS the place for taking pictures. We will go back with that in mind. We prefer the Ouray to Yankee Boy to Imogene to Telluride route. Late lunch in Telluride. Then your preference back.

There's a few spots on the west side of the pass that are challenging but doable in just about any 4x4 especially if you do this side going down. Honestly, I think an expert driver might be able to do this whole trail in 2 wheel drive if done East to West and in a short wheelbase vehicle so they didn't have to use reverse. The miles and miles of views both horizontally and vertically from both the pass and Oh Point are more than worth the drive.

Miles and miles of big rocks. High clearance and low range is simply a given. At times in the Jeep we found ourselves leaned sideways enough to have at least one passenger end up crawled up on top of another lol. Maybe having to do that while edging along near cliffs at times was a bit much. It was raining and all those rocks were slippery so that might have caused some of the worry too. This is a trail where parts can get broke. We saw one blown tire and one totaled ATV. Although this trail isn't famous like some others, I would say it's very memorable!! We really can't say there was anything about this trail we would want to see again if we weren't going to Poughkeepsie.

It's a beautiful drive with lots of waterfalls, nothing to difficult for stock 4x4's, some tricky switchbacks that may need a spotter and a few tight shelf roads but lots of areas for passing. Enjoyable.

Matthew, I think you could do this since you have plenty of clearance.

If you want something challenging....do Black Bear Pass, it's only for the experienced, seriously.

Happy Trails!

Got to the top of Imogene and it started sleeting and 10' of visibility. A little sketchy at times, but great fun. We parked at the top and within 10 minutes it cleared up and we saw spectacular views of Telluride.

Twice through in a 2017 Ford Raptor. Some fun/tricky spots. You definitely want a high clearance 4x4 for this trail.

Question for anyone who has done this. I have a Dodge Ram 2500 Power Wagon. I have lots of clearance, 35s, lockers....but is there any section of this trail that my width or lack of turning radius will make it impassable? THANKS!

This road is also County Road 31. With another route option on County Road 31a further up the road. When you come to the CR 31a sign stay left on CR31. This way will take you to Yankee Girl mine and then you can continue from there. A little further past Yankee Girl there are other mines and the road turns right into a switch back and looks kind of steep. Sometimes a little messy with some mud. This in the only semi difficult section of the whole road. But it's not that bad and worth it so just go for it. Any good 4x4 or suv can get past. Then continue down the road to remains of Red Mountain Town. You can see what is left of the old jail house and after that the National Bella Mine. At the intersection at Red Mountain Town you can go straight for a shorter route that goes back out to the hwy or turn left. I recommend left for more scenery and adventure. Once you go left and over the hill turn right and finding the rest of the way is easy. There are other mines and history to check out on the other side roads. For example by turning on Guston road before you get to Yankee Girl you can go hike to American Girl mine or hike to the old turn table which is where the trains would turn around. Both are worth it. I hope this helps you and that you can enjoy this place like I have.

Amazing views from the highest pass in Telluride!! We departed July 5th from Telluride and went up and over Imogene Pass to Ouray. There were at least two sections of the trail we had to veer off to avoid the very slick-icy trail. The trail had not been completely cleared but with a couple slight detours we were able to navigate off and back onto the main trail.
Once we reached the peak, the trail down to Ouray was free from ice. We had two creek crossings on the way down. We removed our shoes for both icy-cold water crossings.
LOVED the view from Imogene Pass.

Hopefully, I'm headed up there 7/11. Will a long bed 4X4 truck make it?

Fun drive. First time four wheeling. Own a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, no lift. Got high centered on a snowy patch at the top and needed some friendly folks from New Mexico to help pull me out. Flowers were not in full bloom though. Looks like they are going to be great in a couple of weeks. I'm new at it, but I'm guessing this drive is not too tough for the experienced drivers. Definitely gets more challenging and fun at the top. My kids (teens) loved it. Lots of great places to stop and take photos.

Beautiful basin. Still snowed in a the top, can't reach the last quarter mile or so with vehicle and would need to hike trough snow. Only small flowers, while I've never seen the full bloom, I expect it's still a couple weeks until the larger flowers open. Was a great afternoon picnic for the family.

Drove and hiked portions of this trail in September 2015. Portions are rocky with high clearance a must. Fun driving, fun hiking, elevation kicked my butt, and beautiful scenery.
