this trail can lead to many different ones

Dirt road to trailhead, went in a compact sedan and made it — slowly. There is a huge trail system here and this particular route was just okay. Yesterday there was a bit of snow on the trail but no extra traction devices were needed. Where the trail ends on the all trails map above is in the middle of a trail with no view or lookout to speak of. Luckily we met a nice gentleman who told us to continue straight take a right on the dirt road, then take the first trail off to the left and explore around the boulders on Chautauqua peak. The views were alright nothing out-of-this-world.

The trail cuts through a meadow/Gulch which I’m sure would be amazing in the summer with all the wildflowers. That is when I would recommend completing this trail. I likely would not return in the winter.

We really enjoyed this trail. Also glad we brought the 4 wheel drive vehicle for the road to the trail head. It’s a steady up or down trail, not much flat. Today there was still some ice and snow on the trail. We met only one other person on the trail.

The lion-share of this hike is an uphill service road. Pretty hard on two kids. The pay-off is gorgeous but I wish there was a more interesting, less drastic uphill, to get there. Will go again in the summer, using a different trail, to see the lake.

The trail runs on a gravel road for most of the hike but then becomes a narrow trail towards the top. Along the trail there are Spruce, Fir, Pine, and Aspen trees and at the top you will get good views of the surrounding mountains and Palmer Lake. Trail 360 on YouTube

We did the entire trail until we got to the "balanced rock" at the top of rhe hill. We recorded a total of 7.5 miles for the loop. Beautiful hike

great little hike with a nice view at the end! will definitely do this hike again.

Nice quick trail. Southern Colorado geology is amazing, so it was worth the trip.

Quite beautiful this time of year!

I really liked this hike, great views with lots of wild flowers. The trail was not marked very clear with a specific trail title at the beginning. Some areas of the trail not clearly marked, that could get some one lost on the way back. I use a Garmin watch with bread crumbs tracking on all of my hikes and trail runs to keep from getting off the trail and lost on out and back trails. Over all beautifull hike I will defiantly do again. Very secluded not a lot of foot traffic. I carry bear spray, just used common sense. Great Hike I would include in my Colorado Springs area top 10.

found some wild raspberries

Good trails, easy terrain, poorly marked trail markers and a lot of unmarked sub trails

hiked this today, not "easy" as in an easy hike, but easy trail to walk on. it starts with all uphill for a little over a mile. Not a good first hike for newbs. Overall great hike with beautiful lakes and wildflowers.

Smells like piss the whole way and has real nice graffiti. Other than that it's real nice.

Nice long loop. Started at Mt Herman TH therefore 1st 3/4 of loop was well wooded and quite enjoyable. Walking up the road the final 1/4 was less so. Lots of crossing trails along the way so have a good map or follow all-trails track closely.

Gorgeous. Worth the Effort. Look for the Reservoir Trailhead, as it's not called Balanced Rock. The first mile is tough and steep. A great trail run.

Amazing trail but do be careful. Saw a momma and not so baby bear in the aspen grove across the bridge once you're south of the whole resevoir. timid browns that scattered quickly but keep an eye and ear out.

A beautiful trail. Lots of wild flowers.

Hiked beginning of June. Great hike. Gem Lake is a great pit stop for a picnic

trail itself was enjoyable but views were little to none and it ended at an offroad trail. we just prefer trails with something at the end to enjoy

Would have rated it higher if there had been a lookout

Great hike, although at times quite the incline that goes for a while. Pack water for the pups as they can't get in watershed ponds.

Several places to stop and picnic along the way as you make the hike up to Balance Rock. The road up after the 2nd gate is a bit rutted so make sure you watch your step. The view is worth it.

It was amazing

Beautiful hike through the woods on White Ghost trail and around the mountain. I came down the mountain on Mt. Herman road which made the return trip a bit sketchy with cars going up. First half of the hike made it all worth it. My phone tracked 13.5 miles rather than the 8.9 that All Trails showed on the app.

Awesome Hike! So beautiful with breath taking views. I would actually rate this as intermediate, not moderate. We started at the trailhead from Mt. Herman Road, about 5 miles total. Next time we will plan accordingly so we can do another .25 miles to Palmer Lake reservoir. That would be an awesome way to top of the trip. We also loved that there were not a lot of people on this trail.

Definitely farther than 9 miles. Fairly easy hike but you spend 3 miles walking on mt Herman rd which is fairly dangerous. I suggest (if there are 2 of you or more) parking one car at the lower parking lot and one car at the top lot (just before you go on the actual trail to skip this part and cut out the long, hot, uphill, dangerous gravel road walk.

Went the reservoir route- added about 2.5 extra miles to the hike. Beautiful easy uphill, breath-taking views at top, but treacherous about 1 mile down hill descent from the top of the mountain.
