There is a cairn where the Jouflas trail meets the McDonald trail (on the left), at the area where you can see down into a rock crevice, and it's the only visible indication of where to go. BE AWARE - this leads you off this trail and onto the Jouflas trail. We followed this and wound up getting off the trail and lost... there were a series of off-trail cairns that led us down a non-trail path, which was really annoying!!!! I guess that shows this happens a lot, so watch out! We weren't able to complete the hike. Luckily, we connected to the Jouflas trail and looped back around to get a great view from above, but we were hoping to hike in the creek, and get to the water. We were able to see another group make the same mistake and lead them toward the correct trail though, so at least we prevented others from doing the same. Pretty trail and area, but have to give it 1 star because of the misdirection on the trail.

We are not physically challenging ourselves this trip (broken hand) and this was perfect. GPS said loop trail was 1.8 miles from parking area with about a 200 foot ascent. Plenty of benches to rest and enjoy a not terribly inspiring view but you can see all the way to a Utah mountain range 60 miles away. Wildflowers were pretty. Saw one fossil.

Beautiful flowers and very out of shape people friendly

Nice quick hike and well marked trail. Beautiful wildflowers in spring!

Beautiful trail. Weather was mid 60s and warm in the sun. Welcome breeze on the ridges. This is an easy to moderate hike with no edges which is very important to me.
Started at around 12:00 and finished at 3:00
The views are stunning! Love the bright greens in the springtime and there were flowers starting to show. I highly recommend this hike - preferably in the spring and fall and not on too windy of a day.
Hardly anyone else on the trail so it is nice and quiet.

Amazing little hike!! It's short, flat, and easy. Don't let the view from the parking lot deceive you. The hike drops into a beautiful sandstone canyon filled with petroglyphs and flowers. The walls echo the voices of time, and the river flows with the magic that only the colorado can contain. Check out the alcove near the river, but don't stop their. The views of the canyon from the river are icing on the cake.

Did Steven's loop about a month ago, I think it was 2.8 miles, a lot of fun with slot canyons and a good view of the Colorado.

Good for kids

It's ok but go early to beat the heat

This is a very short, easy hike, but it was great because there are signs that explain the geology, etc. of the region and you get to see dinosaur bones and fossils! We saw a lot of families with small children on it, but it was just my husband and I and we really enjoyed it.

Excellent hike with amazing views of the Colorado River and surrounding mesas and mountains. Only saw one other group on the trail. Access roads are gravel and dirt but are easily passable in a normal car. I hike relatively quickly and the hike took 3 hours, 15 minutes so I would allow for up to 4 hours if you take time along the river side to stop (which is well worth it).

This is a great hike near Grand Junction, CO. We stopped here for a hike on the way to Utah and the general Moab area. To get the best of this hike you need to climb the 1000 ft. to the top of the rim above the Colorado River. Take the trail to the West at the junction of the loop trail that is 1 hour into the hike. This is the easiest way to get to the top. Due to the incline and 4 hour trip, my wife would say that this is more moderate than easy, but a great hike for all. Young children (under 8) are not likely to make the full journey.

They rate this trail as "hard". That's a F$!#ing understatement. If you are a beginner mountain biker you are going to walk. A ton. This trail is beautiful but extremely technical. There are huge panoramas the entire day. Do you enjoy carrying your bike up 400 foot hills covered in loose rock? I hope so because you will get your chance. I set out to do the entire Kokopelli but cashed in my chips after this leg. The campsite at Westwater is very primitive, but AMAZING!!!!

GREAT TRAIL. VIEW WAS AWESOME. CLIMB IS A PRETTY GOOD ONE FOR THOSE OF US THAT OUR SHAPE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. MY GPS CLOCKED JUST A HAIR PAST 7 MILES FROM CAR, UP AROUND THE LOOP AND BACK DOWN. HAD LUNCH AT TOP, RIGHT AT THE 3.5 MILE MARK. VIEW NORTH DESERT ALL THE WAY AROUND SOUTH TO THE LA SALS. TOP OF TRAIL IS MILD AND RELAXING. DID NOT SEE ANYTHING THAT SAID NO DOGS, SO THE LAB WENT WITH ME. DID SEE A NO BIKES SIGN.

Ease of access as you fly by on Route 70 is a great feature in getting here. I did this at twilight and completed under moonlight. Nice n easy hike, interesting but very short considering. More of an attraction than a proper jaunt.

I am just beginning Mtn biking but husband is very experienced: We started at Lion Loop trail head, it was just to tough a terrain for me. However, my husband did Moore Fun Trail and loved it, it is technical especially for a first ride of the season (March 6). We headed down to Rustler's Loop it was a fun run with all sorts of technical situations easy enough for me to do (mostly.) We had a lot of fun, great overlooks of the Colorado River. Once we finished that trail my husband headed over to Mary's loop to finish up his day, he enjoyed it said it was fun. I hope to make it back next week, it was tough for a beginner but a great ride too! I am giving this a four star as it was my first experience, my husband though says its a five!

Pretty remote, don't forget water. Once on the mesa was just a nice stroll, getting up and down was the beast. http://goo.gl/maps/F1Ep3

Just finished the entire kokopelli trail from Fruita, CO to Moab, UT. Pure amazing. We cut off after the first day to do the western rim trail, and I was in awe the entire time, definitely an amazing cut off for technical biking during the trip. If there is a best time to do the trail it is now. All the roads have been incredibly maintained. The la sal loop portion even got freshly paved!! Incredible climbing and heart stopping downhill. If you haven't done it, do it now!!! Thank you to South Park Adventure Guides for bringing me along!!

This trail Being right off Highway 70, Is an ideal stop for a one hour hike. I would not recommend it to drive To,only as a rest stop or passing by. The history of the dinosaur and its tracks are really nice to see As well as some the skeletal remains.
