We had a blast. I think it is more along the lines of moderate with the last half mile difficult. there are several down trees along the trail. there is a stack of rocks where you make your final right turn to head up to the lake. the sign is there but not very well marked. the lake is beautiful and cold. the fish weren't biteing for us but we saw others catching some. moose were spotted at the lake and on the trail.

Great trail! Make sure you do the sleepy lion trail up. When you hit Hull ranch do not go that way go to the right where you will find the summit of the trail and a gorgeous view of the lake. We almost missed it and went the Hull route. There’s not a lot of shade on the last 2 miles back so be prepared for that.

WOW. This is definitely one of my favorite hikes and I will hope to be doing this one again before the snow flies. Loads of wildflowers and several water crossings. The trail follows the river, so there you get to enjoy the sound of rushing water the entire way. My 7 and 10 year old hiked 6 miles no problem. Lovely family friendly hike. Lots of dogs. Please keep them on a leash as we had a few encounters with some overly friendly dogs.

Pay the $7.00 to use the toilets at the campground. It is worth it and clean! Best kept vault bathrooms I've seen!

It’s a very nice trail !!

Great hike, a few steeper spots but generally easy. We saw almost no people on the trail which is increasingly difficult in the front range.

Great distance and elevation for beginners who want to get some incline!

Did this yesterday. They did a great job fixing this trail up, there's still signs along the trail of erosion from the flood, but the trail itself is in good condition. A fun mixture of up and down the entire way, and the homesteads/artifacts were awesome to explore! It's a good reminder to never take anything from these sights, but it was cool being able to look at the artifacts up close. Lots of sharp rusty metal and glass around the ruins, so watch your step, especially if you have kids. Also a LOT of poison ivy, so stay on trail and cover your legs!

Beautiful easy trail! Got there about 11:30 on a Sunday and the trail wasn't too crowded. Very shady and cool for a summer day!

This trail is dope. Beautiful views, waterfalls, it’s fun to hike, and there are great places to take photos for you IG

The homestead meadows and trails up there were a great surprise. Wasn't expecting too much from a trail that starts on the side of busy highway 36. I'll be back to explore more of the system.

Took my wife to start her getting into shape for more strenuous hikes; moving here to Lyons from NY. About 1/4 mile from damn we encountered a nice size black bear. My wife freaked a little and turned around, couldn’t convince her to keep going. So beautiful a trail, I’m going back.

Such an incredibly beautiful trail! I love that it is dog friendly, because my pooch absolutely loves to hike. We love trails that have water, and this trail has a river that you follow all the way to a reservoir. We also saw a black bear on our hike! Thank goodness it was on the other side of the creek from us. Very neat place.

Once again you can never tell what the rating system AllTrails uses.i would say the rating of moderate doesn’t seem to fit. I would rate the climb in to be difficult. The distance to be easy and the descent technically challenging. Morning rides are less packed and 5pm everyone and their brother/sister hits it after work. High traffic for sure on weekends and evening. I’ve seen lots of people carrying their bikes up hill and going ass over apple cart on the descent. Some may say it’s the line you take. There is some truth tho that.
I would tell my friends to ride it in the morning. that it’s lots of fun on the down hill and the climb is a challenge. It’s a trail short enough to do laps. Enjoy!!!

Sleepy Lion trail is beautiful - stunning views of the dam and Longs Peak, meadows with wildflowers, morning shade in the trees and we had it practically to ourselves on a Wednesday morning. I brought it down to 4 stars because to do the loop you hike back on a dirt road which is nice enough next to the creek but not 5 stars.

Tricky to find and stay on the trail. Make sure to be tracking/mapping

Trail repairs were well done. This is a great hike. Only one section, more than halfway, which is rocky and steep for one-half mike. Meadow is beautiful.

This is a beautiful trail. Pretty easy and makes for a good walk through the woods. Would be a great trail for trail running and kiddos. Trail runs right next to the river and stays within the shade of the trees. If you’re looking for a more relaxing “hike” this is the trail.

I absolutely love this trail. Wide open plains, trails around the foothills and narrow trails through the trees up into the mountains. Riding through the foothills of Lyons is just so beautiful. I heard watch for rattlesnakes on the rocks by the trails but haven’t see any. I love it here!
IMO horses need boots or shoes for sure through some of the really rocky areas. It’s mostly smooth sailing but I still wouldn’t go without them. Parking for trailers is an easy pull through.
GPS to the trailhead was off for me it was about a mile further up ahead on the right. Almost missed the turn into the trailhead. Because I thought I had past it. I pinned it for the next time. Watch out for trail closures on the website before heading out. Closes a lot because of muddy trails after a rain. Approx 9 miles. Happy Trails!

Nice trail. We didn’t do the hummingbird switchbacks today because we were looking for a quick hike. Saving it for next time. From the sleepy lion loop you get a nice view of the reservoir from up above. You also get to walk along the river. Not too difficult. Some steep parts but plenty of flat stretches as well. The sky did turn dark behind us and we heard thunder while on the way back while the sky ahead was perfectly blue. There are bathrooms just past the parking lot. Obey the rules—there was a ranger very vigilantly watching.

Great trail! Worth it to find the wildflowers and waterfall.

This trail is an easy hike with a very gradual incline. It's mostly shaded with a few flowery meadows along the way. There are some great spots by the river for photography and bird watching!

Great, dog-friendly front range hike. Got to parking lot around 8am and it was only half full. Took us 3 hours with a few stops for our pup, but could easily be done in 2. The switchbacks to the reservoir are worth the effort - nice spot to have a snack and relax for a bit. This seems to be a pretty quiet trail comparative to other hikes in the area. It does get pretty sunny and warm, so bring plenty of water.

Good trail for a good run. Not too rocky or steep. Perfect temperature as well. Not very busy at all. I will definitely be back.

Absolutely fantastic hike. This one has it all. With option to keep going further into hall ranch trails at the top. Was about to turn around at the top of sleepy lion in the large field before the view of the dam due to inclement weather but so glad I pushed forward. The sky went from dark most of the afternoon to a full 180 of afternoon sunlight. The river and dam portions are astonishing.

Great summer trail next to river. People were taking dips and cooling down. First part of trail is a road but then the loop is a great true trail with nice views.

Such a beautiful hike with amazing scenery. Good mixture of rocks and road. Make sure to do the Sleepy Lion Trail. Will be back for sure.
