Short day hike with incredible views! We saw three other people our entire time hiking, so if you're looking to get away from the crowds you'll definitely enjoy this hike!
The road to the trailhead may be inaccessible due to snow, so that's something to consider if you are planning on hiking this during the winter. If the road is inaccessible due to snow, it may tack on an extra 3-4 miles one way.
When we went, the road had a good bit of snow on it, but nothing a Subaru couldn't handle. The snow made the hike a lot harder than it normally is. We did the hike without YakTrax/Micro Spikes or Snow Shoes, but I'd definitely recommend them due to sections of steep rocky terrain that we found difficult to grip in snowy/icy conditions.

Wonderful hike! Took my 60 year old parents on this and they loved it. It is very steep for the last half mile, but otherwise a very gradual income. Being a jacket for the lake, the wind has quite the chill. Perfect amount of sun and forested shade on the way up.

Short but sweet! A real gem!

The three seniors in my group, 79, 83, 83, found this trail very difficult. I used the elevation readings from my iPhone to calculate an elevation gain of 1,080 feet.

enjoyed this hike however, be aware the trail around the lake can be difficult to keep track of.

Great hike for beginner backpackers staying the night. Great spots on the entire south side of the lake. Found a spot that was fenced in by trees to camp with a nice fire ring. Great for teaching a pup off leash. Weather was incredible

lovely and quiet hike. challenging. great drive up...lots to see en route.

Lovely, fairly easy hike to a beautiful clear lake. Def take the trail around the whole lake. It’s worth it! Beautiful day on 9/21. Didn’t arrive at the trailhead til noon and made it up pretty quick. This is a great trail for families.

peaceful no people...fall

Beautiful lake and trail. The trail is a lot of up and down and lots of different terrain. There is no huge climb just up and down. The end of trail is another parking lot (with bathroom which is good. ) But the return hike doesn’t offer any new views so we were a little disappointed. Beautiful place to camp and appears people like to fish in the lake. We never saw anyone in the trail so if you like quiet trails .. this is great. If I did it again I would go about 5 miles in and then back.

Hiked this trail on a Thursday. I saw only two people and that was on my return. It was a gorgeous sunny day and the gold leaf aspens on the side of the mountain were beautiful. The lake was great and trail around it is a single track trail that gives you great views of the lake. I thought this was a nice and easy trail. Bring a lunch and eat it on a rock by the lake.

Some steep sections, but by the time it starts to wear on you, you're already at the lake.
Made it up to the lake in about 40 minutes with a handful of quick breaks to catch my breath.
Beautiful views, especially with the fall colors in full swing!
Saw about 8 other groups of people, including some folks camping on the lake.

Absolutely gorgeous hike! Starts off flat, with very steep last 0.5 miles or so to get to the lake. The end was a bit too difficult for my parents, who are not experienced hikers/do not live at altitude. Rocky footing on the trail throughout that can be slick when wet. Your shoes will definitely get wet if you plan on walking around the lake.

Fun hike. Smooth, great country.

flat for 1.5 miles then really steep for .5
we backpacked mon- tue and saw about 10 groups going up the trail and 10 going back but only 3 sleep overnight. the lake is so big that I did not see that many people up at the lake

bring big repellant but they are not that bad.

it is beautiful

Fun hike through the beautiful fragrant forest of pines. Trail is a somewhat rocky ( not scree) and has a nice but steady incline to the lake. Few stream crossings but we were able to cross without getting our feet wet. The trail around the lake gives several different viewpoints.

Some steep sections but well worth it.

It’s a pretty lake and the walk offers nice views.

Really enjoyed the hike.... lots of forest and open vista. Views are really nice al no the way and the lake did not disappoint! We took trail around which gave views from above the lake... always great perspective!

Great run

Great hike with rocky trail... be sure to wear good hiking shoes! Well worth the full trail around the lake...great views from different angles and to get above the lake is nice!

The hike up to the lake is beautiful, there is a variety of terrain and the change of surroundings which keeps it interesting. It goes from an all forested area to more open spaces with better views of the mountains. There are a few creeks to pass over so wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. The pebbles on the trail can be slippery in some places too so be careful when coming down.

Great “1st Backpacking” trail. Elevation profile is a little deceiving as you do most of the climb just before the lake. Around the lake you will find several “developed” camp spots with fire rings and logs to sit on. Absolutely gorgeous. Rained all morning so plan appropriately. Most people know it rains in Colorado in the afternoons but at this altitude and locale it can rain all day in late summer/fall.

Trail is an old Jeep road so it’s wide most of the way and easily passable with a pack. Lots of people frequent this trail but it’s a great hike with a gorgeous payoff to reward your hard work. Camping around the lake is recommended!

This a beautiful trail and I wish I'd had more time to enjoy it. The views are INCREDIBLE. A few people were out but not crowded. I would have liked to have seen more wildlife but that's my only complaint. Definitely recommend!

Gorgeous hike. Lots of good wildflowers. Not too hard and lots of short flats to break up the steep uphills. Very lightly trafficked. Nice if you want to stay away from the crowds. Would recommend. Parking lot was pretty small so maybe get an early start.

What a beautiful trail! Portions of the trail open up to the sandy, sometimes rocky shoreline and other sections are quite secluded thanks to the trees. There are some pleasant hills and a few more rocky down/uphill spots that were really fun! Would have rated higher if there weren’t so many campsites along the trail, but that’s definitely a plus if you’re looking to camp by the lake!

A great easy hike around a lake that is over looked by Mt Massive and Elbert. Beautiful views around the lake, a nice acclimation hike.

Fun with great views and solitude on a weekday afternoon. Cool mining cave on the way up, too!

Nice lake but nothing spectacular--consider it an average Colorado hike. We actually did this hike on July 21 from a different TH, which you can get to by taking the FR107 (high-clearance 4WD road) north of Lake County Rd 9. My review is for that TH. By going from that TH, it cut the total distance of the hike in half to about 3 miles RT with about 400 feet elevation gain--this was the perfect distance for our 3-year old. But going this way, you do have to hike uphill on the way back, which is not ideal for young children. The trail goes by the Continental Divide Trail and you hike mostly on the Colorado Trail. We had to climb through a few rock fields and over some boulders to get around to part of the lake, but nothing unmanageable or scary. We saw chipmunks, squirrels, wildflowers, and only a handful of people, most of which came up from the Timberline Lake TH. Mosquitoes were around a little bit throughout the trail and were the worst at the TH. With our leisurely pace and lunch break at the lake, it took us about 3 1/2 hours total. The TH isn't too far from the Leadville Fish Hatchery, so that was a big after-hike hit with our boys.
