amazing trail. The terrain is easy, but with the elevation this is not quite an "easy" hike like some others I've seen on this app. There was still some snow at the top, and with the rising temps it was a bit slippery coming down, but well worth the climb to get the 360 degree views.

camping

This Fire Lookout is now a private campsite rentable through the US Forest Service. The people in the lookout tower are not FS employees. They are paying guests. It's the paid campers whose cars are parked at the gate. We should all try to respect the privacy of these campsites so that the guests can get the most out of the experience and if the guests enjoy it, it will be a profitable venture for the Forest Service that has just taken a hefty budget cut. Let's try to be respectful by not expecting to tour a camper's private space. If we want to tour the tower, we should rent it, and in doing so, we will help to preserve this really cool history. Thanks!

There were many mountain goats which their young in the parking area. This is very exciting and they are used to seeing people and being near them, however I witnessed many people petting them or chasing them around. This is not okay. There should have been rangers regulating this, unfortunately they were only monitoring the parking lot. So if you plan on taking the drive and exploring the top please be respectful of the animals, observe from afar and stay out of their way. This is their home and we’re all just visiting. Also, if you see any of this behavior take place don’t be afraid to say something, just to keep everyone safe.

This was a wild goose chase. This is not an official trail and as such there is no trailhead. This is actually forest service road 262 also known as Cinnamon gulch road. You can drive most of the way to the top. If you try hiking you will probably get mowed down by a jeep or a dirt bike. There were plenty to go around. It is actually a beautiful drive and was very easy in my larger 4x4 pick-up. Once we made it to the end of the road we did search for an actual marked trail. On the way down I spoke with some forest service personnel and they confirmed there isn't one. Don't forget to drive the surrounding roads as there are many old mines with beautiful views nearby. We ended up hiking part of the Argentine pass trail which is just up FR 260 from this spot.

Great trail. Incredible views. Worth the hike.

Beautiful day. 95 degrees in Denver, was about 75 on Devils Canyon 4x4 Road. We did the full loop plus a couple of side trails. Lots of fun. Jeep Wrangler 4 Door with 4” lift and 35s made it very easy, But I haven’t been off-road driving in years, so still had a blast. Lots of fun. Beautiful views up top.

My daughters and I hiked this trail and it was breath taking! The way up can be a bit of a challenge if you aren’t used to the elevation but back down only took us 20 minutes. I can’t recommend this trail highly enough! You’ll love it!

This hike has a steady incline but nothing drastic. It is exposed in several parts, so start early and bring the sunscreen. The views at the top are just amazing!

Nice little walk. Pretty lake. I'd go out and back rather than loop and walk down the off-camber side of the road. First trip into that area, was a nice place to start!

Not very interesting or very fun.

Great day. Snow is still blocking the peak, but you can climb over and hike some of the continental divide trail.

Great view at the top!!!

Beautiful winding trail, with wild flowers and the occasional ground hog. Chief Mountain views are well worth the effort. I suggest getting there before 8am, the trails are kind of narrow and I starts to get pretty heavily trafficked late morning.

Beautiful day today on this short, but somewhat moderate (on the uphill) hike. Views half way and further towards top were amazing! In the midst of so many wildfires across our state, the skies were very blue with pretty white clouds. The parking area was very crowded at 9:30 today, lots of people on trail. Happy to see almost all dogs leashed and lots of families out! I love this hike (in ALL seasons) because it feels a little like a 14-er, but much easier and accessible for non-acclimated hikers.

Beautiful views perfect morning walk

This is a short hike from the parking area to the top. Top was chilly and windy, so bring a jacket on this one. We hiked a little side trail on the way back down that takes you along a ridgeline. There were wildflowers, marmots, and chipmunks all over the place. Highly recommend it - It was nice to get away from the crowds!

Hike was relatively uphill the whole time but was a quick trick to the top. Would rate between easy and moderate; I’ve done hikes listed as moderate on this app that were easier (flatter) than this hike. But it is short and to the point and can be knocked out in about two hours. Great views at the top.

scenic driving

Completed on Thurs 6/28. There's a checkpoint about 14miles from the summit, where admission cost $15. Up until the checkpoint the drive is scenic and relaxed. Once you get past the checkpoint the road changes; becomes narrower, no barriers and far more bumpy - the driver has to be awake! Having said that, the drive is a lot of fun - great views where you can see for miles. There's a couple of area's to stop off on the journey up; viewpoints, a little shop (I think, although we didn't stop and go in), and Summit Lake. The road takes you to a parking lot just shy of the summit, so you can hike the final 100ft or so. My group and I certainly felt the altitude up here, but there were also a lot of younger kids who seemed fine! Make sure to bring some warmer clothing, as although it was about 80deg down in Idaho Springs, it was cool enough for us to throw on jackets and pants at the summit. The view at the summit was truly amazing and well worth the white-knuckle drive up!

Fantastic views near the top. Fun little day trip running all the spiderweb trails around. We did this all in a stock SR5 4Runner, not sure why it’s listed as “moderate”.

This is a great hike with stunning views. My adult sons picked this for us since it was "easy" and I'm not a regular hiker. The incline was a challenge for me so for someone not used to the mountains I would call this a moderate hike. We started the hike around 11:15 am and there wasn't many people there. It took us about 2.5 hours.

It was a fun trail. It gets technical in areas and very rocky. Make sure you find spots to pass people, it can get very narrow. Overall it was fun, but a little more challenging than expected.

Wow these views are really beautiful! Pretty easy hike with a steady incline! Once you clear the trees you can break right for a cool lookout spot! We started later in the day right before sunset and only saw one other person!

Great trail a little challenging with a stock jku. Just pick your line. Had fun

Awesome road, still snow at the top so can't go all the way up. Overall easy except for the hairpins where there is loose gravels.

I really enjoyed this hike. It was a nice steady incline, but not too steep. We started around early, around 7:30, and there were only a few people on the trail with us. However, by the time we started heading down there were a lot of people on the trail. The view from the top is amazing, just get there early.

Holy smokes that view is somethin else.

Short easy hike for beautiful panoramic views! Tons of flies on top of the mountain for some reason. Don’t leave your food, pack in pack out folks! Limited parking along the pass. Easy to miss the trailhead as it is directly off the side of the road.

I have hiked this trail 12 times over the years..eight times with my grandsons. At first they were carried up but by 3 they walked it. Gummy bear rewards helped. It was fairly crowded so parking spots on the side road were at a premium. Easy hike. Love the alpine tiny flowers and the Bristlecone Pines. And the views...amazing. Well worth your time...and so close

Short hike close to Denver with incredible views from the top and cool rocks to climb or just hang out! I do disagree with the “easy” rating. I hike once per week, usually 4-6 mile hikes that are rated moderate. I found this to be just as hard if not harder. It is short but you do climb almost a 1000 feet in a short amount of time, so for me not easy but very doable:...it was really hot today which always makes a bit more difficult:-)

Gorgeous panoramic views for a relatively short hike that is also close to the city. Wonderful route for the novice hiker or someone new to the area. A leisurely enjoyable route for an experienced hiker.
