It was a very nice trail with beautiful views at the top of Ptarmigan Hill. The downside was there was a group of 4 wheelers also using the trail. They stop at a corral area, before the final steep ascent to the top. I didn’t bring water for my dog and she needed the last mile up.

Beautiful day for a great family hike! Trail was in very good condition for early season. We would highly recommend it and the climb on up to Ptarmigan Hill which provided some additional views of this scenic area.

For such an easily accessible trail, it's not crowded.

This is a leisurely walk for the first couple of miles. Most of the modest gain in elevation occurs after the second mile. The snow is gone from the trail, and a path is open to reach the top of Ptarmigan - over 12,100 feet. But the final ascent to the top is steep.

The stream at the beginning is low, and we crossed without incident.

Pretty streams, a pond dammed up by beavers, and mountain vistas await. There are wildflowers on the path, especially near the top. But if you are particularly interested in reveling in a blanket of colors, there are other hikes that offer a greater abundance of wildflowers.

Wonderful trail with gradual elevation. Hiked to the relaxing sounds of a river, and various birds. There were several feet of snow at the final climb of the trail. Need long pants and solid boots for this. I went around much of it. There was also some significantly muddy areas that require good boots. Wonderful view of the mountains at the end of the trail.
Follow the written instructions to find the trail at this time, the trail mapped out has you crossing a river in the beginning and end that is quite deep at this time. So follow the bike path and hike under the highway as instructed.

If you feel up to it, you can go to the to of any of the peaks at the end of the marked trail. The view is worth it!!

Great hike- low traffic- gradual incline and beautiful views. Water along the way for dogs. Easy to find trail head, ample parking and restrooms.

Beautiful. A few places were a little muddy but overall was a great hike. Very slow, easy incline. Wildflowers are pretty.

Great hike off of Vail Pass. Uncrowded trail that meets up with a 4 wheel drive road. We followed the road and then hiked up to the top of Ptarmigan Hill also known as Shrine Mountain. Beautiful views!

We did this trail with hopes of getting up to ptarmigan pass. We did get to the pass but the snow fields kept us from getting to the top of the mountain. Beautiful views and we had the place to ourselves. We parked at the rest area.

Great ski/snowboard mountain. Wide variety of terrain for all skill levels, and the snow is typically great. The wind can be a little rough at the summit with plunging temperatures, but it is well worth the trip if you can get a discounted lift ticket. Full price is outrageous.

Great hike but I never found the trail. Where the gps coordinates take you to is not a trail head. So my dog and I just hiked up the Gulch. Beautiful views and Beaver dam about half way up

Park at the top of Vail Pass in the rest stop parking lot. Instead of walking down the bike path to access this trail, recommend starting at the east end of the parking lot where there is also access to this trail. (Small sign there.) Easy hike. Lots of wildflowers. Beautiful views and open meadows. Just takes a couple of hours at a relatively slow pace. You can go farther as well.

We went in 2011 ( good snow year) and skied Spaulding Bowl, which was steep and moguled, and the terrain off of the black bus. It wasn't crowded, but was heavily powdered.
