A trail around a lake, wherein small rocky "islands" sit. Most of the hike is very easy but there are some short, steep, rocky inclines throughout. Small trails shoot off the main course, which are also fun to explore. There is a beach and pit toilets located nearby. The main parking lot for Sylvan Lake also features the trailhead for the strenuous Harney Peak trail. Beautiful and scenic, with lots of landscape photo ops.

We were not prepared for ironedge trail. We took the direct trail up to Lake Charles and Mystic Lake and thought the hard part of the day was over. Little did we know the climb (and route finding) we had ahead of us. It was a little confusing and we had to use AllTrails 3 times to orient ourselves back on the trail. Would make sure you know what you’re in for. I did two 15 mile hikes the weekend prior, so I would say I was reasonably prepared for this trip and it definitely got to me when I was having to trudge up to the ridge line 9 miles in. Would recommend starting with ironedge trail and enjoying the bliss of the lakes, knowing you have a simple downhill after that. All that being said, we did this hike on 10/5/19 and it was peak aspen season. The drive out was stunner and being on top of the ridge gave us full views of aspen groves on both sides. It was totally worth it. Just v long. With getting lost a little, we clocked it at 13.2 miles and 3,250 gain.

We walked to the trailhead a little over a mile from where we were staying in town. Nice hike! I won't do it again and don't recommend it super highly simply for the noise. It was early on a Sunday, and you could hear I-70 pretty loudly the whole time and airplanes flew overhead about every 25 minutes. I think I would come back as a mountain biker since noise isn't a huge issue for that activity, but it was certainly distracting and took away from a meditative hike.

Beautiful hike. Apple says it was 5.42 miles round trip and 1,142 feet of vertical. Took 2.5 hours

Love this trail! We went up and stayed Saturday through Monday. We pretty much the only ones up there. Beautiful area and so peaceful. Great fishing, views, and trails! The colors are just starting to turn.

Great hike. Perfect if you’re looking for something to do while all your friends are climbing down in Lime Creek. The trail is a little longer than the All Trails mileage, so be prepared for an extra mile or so. Pretty heavily trafficked Labor Day Weekend. On my list for backpacking. There were some great campsites up by the lake. Can’t wait to go back!

Hiked this loop 9/7-9/8. Hiked counterclockwise to Mystic Island Lake. Take the larger trail to the right for longer trail to lakes. I usually love going up but this time I was exhausted by camp? I camped on the Western shore 100 yards above small "island". Weather was perfect and mosquitoes were not too bad with repellant. As far as a fishing report...there are tons of fish present. However, they are very very curious but finicky. As a result only caught 2 rainbow and 3 cutthroat trout. I think "catch and release" has jaded these guys. Who can complain in this scenery? The loop hike is much more picturesque counterclockwise. The longer side of the loop had much less water but there is a well at the Backcountry rental hut if you get in a pinch. On a final note. Pay attention to the weather. Had to hump it getting to trailhead to beat rain. Drove out in a downpour passing loads of unhappy cyclists.

Nice trail to some pretty lakes. Took me about 2 hours to lake Charles then another 30 min to Mystic Island. I went out and back the lake Charles trail, feet and ankles too sore to try the ironedge for the return trip.

Huge climb in miles 3-5.

Nice mountain single track trail. during high flower season it would be fantastic. met only 4 people on trail but no wildlife. will be back again 2020 mid July. Great quite campground at trailhead.

One of my favorite trails! Fishing was fantastic at Mystic Island Lake. Since it was late summer the small feeder streams were easy to cross. I started at around 06:15 and was fishing by 09:30.

Very pretty , but couldn’t complete it as it was overgrown.

Wonderful easy trail tho we only did a few miles in before heading back (bc 10 yo was just well, frustrating. And he did a 5 mi trail to Piney Falls the other day!) Anyhow, myself w a 17 yo and 10 yo enjoyed the great trail, mostly private, w amazing views! Shade from the trees was definitely appreciated! Beautiful wildflowers, forest throughout, butterflies, and again, the views and peacefulness of an uncrowded trail! Do the whole thing if u have time and proper gear and companions. Lol

Worth the hike, Lake Charles was beautiful. Wasn't too bad little mud, water and snow to navigate through.

Difficult and all uphill, but worth it

Encountered mountain lions on trail on two separate instances. It was pretty terrifying. Definitely not a good hike with pets or small children given the big cat presence. Also mosquitos were very bad and trail extremely narrow in some parts.

The trail can be difficult to follow and there’s still some snow around 10k ft. Mosquitoes were savage. However, the views are epic and it was worth it.
