Beautiful trail! Not super difficult, we took 3 kids. Lots of trees for shade. We loved this hike! Will definitely do it again sometime. The trail head is about a mile (give or take) from the parking lot we walked and did fine. 4x4 or high vehicle needed for driving after parking lot to trail head.

Pretty trail, a nice and easy walk. Very shaded

Great hike. Very good trail for the first 2 miles. Trail gets steeper and there is more snow, water, mud, and rocks in the trail for the rest of the climb. Don’t miss the turn to the right, up the hill, maybe 100-200 meters after the cabin There is no sign for the turn

Beautiful hike- perfect distance from top to bottom. Trail is in great condition. Dogs had a blast!

Top is still snowed in.

Nice trail. We were on foot and had a lot of competition with bicycles. It was not a problem, just unexpected. Despite the charred trees after the 2018 fire, the views were majestic. This one was nice this time of year due to the lower altitude- no snow.

Really beautiful trail with quite the change in scenery. Aspen forests, open meadows, canyon cliffs and pine forests. The trail descends at first and then it is a stead up and down all the way to the Animas. We backpacked in and camped right along the Animas which was beautiful (took us 2.5 hours to get there). My only complaint is that next to no one was wearing masks. We brought ours and it took us 0.5 seconds the equip them when encountering others.

Beautiful hike. TONS of aspens. Definitely a lot of ups and downs in elevation. So be prepared. Also some narrow portions of the trail with steep drop offs.

beautiful trial! lots of up and down so be prepared - it isn't just a straight drop into the valley.

7.6 round trip. Fun, challenging incline and well worth it!

Excellent trail to hike. Road is blocked off due to construction, but it's an easy walk from there to the trail head at the campground. This trail offers a sample of all kinds of terrain typical of this area. The western part of the loop is relatively level with some low hills toward the south end. Green, grassy glens with wild flowers are frequent throughout the entire loop. The south part of the loop features an old mine site with a placard describing some of the history there. The western side has more elevation changes but nothing difficult. Also, much of the trail on that side follows a creek that is flowing full right now. Great for dogs and kids, too.

Nice hike. Not busy today, 2 mountain bikers and 3 hikers. Diffidently a mountain bike trail but interesting. Nice area with beautiful views. The hike up and down from Hogsback is a bit serious, steep, narrow, loose soil, drop offs, exposure. I used All Trail for navigation. Signs at major trail intersections, none at the trailhead.

The weather changes rapidly at the top, so be aware of wind and rain, but the view is beautiful! The trail continues at the top, leaving room to explore the cliffs. Great trees for hammocking!

Steep climb that starts by a major highway, but totally worth it as you climb up!

This was a nice hike from Purgatory Ski Resort down to the Animas River. The trail is shaded and well marked.

Challenging hike with a huge reward at the top! Conditions were very good today (5/17/20) with the remaining snow field very manageable. This will be a regular hike now that I’m a Durango local!

Beautiful trail. Almost completely dry, lots of water, and amazing views! Goes down into a canton so coming back you go up but it’s not very strenuous besides a few switchbacks.

Terrific trail. Easy to route find and gorgeous views. Definitely a good one for someone from out of town adjusting to altitude or, like me, recovering from a longer hike the day before. Ample parking at the trailhead.

Constant elevation gain, and the heavy breathing and heart pumping was worth it for the view at the end-- absolutely breathtaking!

Very nice trail. I enjoyed the variety of the trail; rolling forest, meadows, rugged rocky terrain with cascading creeks. There are numerous other trails in the area. I took a pic of a trail placard and uploaded it. I needed to use All Trails to stay on the correct trail. Currently they are draining the lake. Working on the dam/road/???? The road is blocked off a half mile short. There is a parking area right there on the South side of the road. There is a trailhead right there for the Aspen Loop

Very poorly marked trails - lots of metal posts with nothing on them. I enjoyed it and did fine with All Trails Pro, but 3 separate couples stopped me to ask how to get back to their cars. For such a clearly popular trail, one would think they would have it marked better. Flowers were gorgeous and 1 stream crossing.

Awesome trail! - Went ahead and took the west trail by crossing the creek. High tide and extremely cold! Make sure to bring water shoes and some extra clothes if you’re wanting to cross -although I wouldn’t recommend as the current was pretty strong-. A lot of the snow has melted compared to last week when we did this hike on the east trail but there are some patches here and there. It’s a bit muddy from the rain as well. But it didn’t deter us and we enjoyed the scenery! We spotted a marmot as well! If you’re looking for a great place to hike, it’s Cascade Creek!
