What a beautiful hike! I can imagine that it’s an oven in the summer, but today the weather was perfect. Moderate is an accurate rating, nothing technical on this trail, but gorgeous non the less. I would also recommend a vehicle with high clearance to get to the trailhead.

At mile 4 I turned back because the trail had faded out. Once up on top of the mesa, the hike to my ending point was pretty boring. But I did enjoy the beginning and the ascent because of the beautiful rock formations.

This one so far is probably my favorite in the gorge. A nice long hike, just be sure to get going to avoid hiking in the heat of the day, at least during August. Our last trip was pretty darn hot!

Nice little trail. Well maintained and easy to follow. Offered some cool views of the surrounding mountains

Probably rated as difficult due to it's entire length. The first mile or so up McCarty Bench is moderate, then the trail is a very gradual incline. Once you get up the bench you are rewarded with stunning views of Grand Mesa and the West Elks.

Got to have 4 wheel drive to get to the trailhead at the top. Otherwise it’s 2.5 miles from valley road to the trailhead. Nice weather for hiking but since I had my kids we only did a 3 mile hike. The toughest part of the hike was the sun.

I want to keep this one a secret it was so good. Easy on the body for an almost ten miler and over 2k elevation gain. Just completed this on May 30th and wildflowers galore. A multitude of other cacti and plants were budding and blooming as well. Perfect temps all day, but the wind picked up *significantly* once evening approaches. I hung out on the trail from 1pm to almost 7pm, starting at the Ute Pass entrance which you can take an AWD vehicle preferably up to a campground area/canyon trailhead (2.5 mi uphill). Ute Pass road ends up being half the hike if you start there. only downside is kind of iffy parking down by some cattle paddocks at that entrance.

Very nice trail, very nice wildflowers...

A good workout and perfect hiking temps now. Trail was dry and evidence of a lot of moisture recently. Views are outstanding. Definite elevation but agree with the rati g of moderate.

Good for everyday exercise loop. Light running and biking loop. This loop has outside equipment to workout on... Too cold in the winter- but nice in the summer if you want an easy outdoors workout close to home. Great for spring, summer and fall. Can get muddy in the winter. Thanks!

I thought this was a great first trail to do. I wasnt disappointed. Trail markings were good. Awesome views. Did have a "nice" whiff of cat pee. Not your cat from home neither. This would be an awesome trail run.

it's called the McCarty trail, not McCarthy just fyi

I did not find the red trail that was marked in the map but I did find an ATV trail that was easy to follow. I tried to find it but honestly this is such an odd placement of a trail because it was right in the middle of 2 farm lands. The view was nice and it was decent amount of hiking but trail marking was poor.

Good work out! Not too difficult. Very beautiful.

Rough road getting in with a Buick Enclave, but didn’t need high clearance. Very scenic hike, dusty and dry, so bring plenty of water. Exposed most of the way. Steep only at beginning and at end. Moderate difficulty is accurate.

Gorgeous views. If following this trail you will want high clearance going up. 33 in tires on Xterra was good enough with no lift. Ran into a couple shorter vehicles backing down the switchbacks to turn around. A bit off the trail is a wall that is supposed to have Ute petroglyphs and has a lot of graffiti :(. One or two looked to be authentic but most was much newer. Didn’t see any signs to quarry along this trail and didn’t take the time to explore much. Nice drive and will go back later with more exploration time.

We are preparing for a hike that involves some immediate elevation gain. This was the perfect choice for us. Immediate gain at beginning, so be ready. Hiking poles were nice to have, especially since this is an out and back trail. The downhill is prone to slipping due to loose dirt and small rocks. We only hiked 3 miles in for 6 round trip, but plan to return for a little more soon.

Great trail!

Fun and challenging trail. Hit it early, it got hot climbing out in April!

Took my atv on this ride. Easy ride and then a short walk

Great trail an what a view !!!

This is a good place to take the four wheelers to the trail head then hike the Dinosaur loop. The Dinosaur Quary is not in very good shape. Signs have been removed or are on the ground. The veiws from there are very beautiful!!!!
