You have to trespass on Union Railroad property to get to this trailhead, so if you’re not into that I wouldn’t recommend this one. You are also near the interstate. I’m not sure why this trail is rated as “easy”. It is a pretty steep uphill course!

Saw a few of the wild horses on the trail. Pretty views of the canyon...if not for the power lines.

great trail. only a few sketchy parts. went to the flagpole and back. wonderful views of the grand valley from the top.

The trail seemed to continue past what AllTrails had marked as the stopping point. It was very windy when we went, but we still enjoyed the hike and saw a small herd of wild horses. We didn’t encounter anyone else on the trail, which was nice.

Great hike but you do have to cross railroad tracks to get to the trailhead.

If you’re bringing dogs, this trail might be better done during the cooler months as the trail has little shade. Beautiful trail!

This trail begins just outside of Palisade, CO (not DeBeque) and is a loop of just under 12 miles. You can hike up the Rapid Creek side to Cabin Reservoir, then back down the Cottonwood Creek side returning to the Trailhead. Or you can do it the opposite way, which is what I prefer. I have camped at the reservoir overnight as well. I have seen many tracks (bear, puma, bobcat, coyote, turkey, elk etc) and have captured all of those on trail cameras placed near this trail. Beautiful views, moderate hiking. Hike up the Cottonwood side and back down the Rapid Creek side for best views. Bring lots of water as you will gain 2k in elevation. Bear spray would be a good idea too....

Not the most scenic trail and it’s very hot and dry. The day is wonderful when the wild horses are out though.

Great views once you get up there. Trail is hard to follow at the top.

Really excited about trying this trail with my daughter until we discovered you have to trespass to get to it. Should include in the description that getting to this trail involves illegal activities.

Not the most scenic hike as far as environment goes. But you're very likely to see wild horses along this trail which is pretty cool if that interests you.

This turned out to be just a single lane dirt road that splits off to Hoodoo trail when you reach the end or you can keep going until you reach a point just north of I-70. It's open to cars and several vehicles passed us during our hike. They were only going a few miles an hour so it was no big deal. This hike was decent as exercise but otherwise uneventful with nothing to see. It gets its name from the layers of soft coal embedded in the rock. There are other trails in the area that are likely more challenging and interesting.
