Lots of snow up there still. We did the whole thing in snow shoes, part of it we needed them for and part of them we could’ve gotten away with Yaktrax or something similar. Right now you more or less follow snowmobile trails up along the route, but sometimes the snowmobile paths veer off the trail route so keep an eye on your map if you care to follow the trail more closely. Certain areas, especially in the beginning, have been so skied and snowmobiled out that it’s hard to tell where the trail goes. But overall a great hike — challenging but not too strenuous. And the little hut at the top makes for a great place to rest before trekking back down.

A favorite hike of mine. Yesterday 08/11/2018 was my second visit to this trail. No matter the season, the views never disappoint.

The trail was too hard for the girls and I for cross country. Would maybe have been better with fresh snow but there are areas around for the to just play on the skis. It was a ton of snow, just a little to crusty and steep.

Heads Up—Trail is STILL closed due to muddy conditions.

snow shoes or cross country skis are required in winter. walking is not allowed. very easy access off main road 10 minutes from Pagosa.

Trail packed down enough until just past cabins for both peaks. Need snowshoes after that

It was a perfect day for snowshoeing. No wind!. Snowshoed above the tree line, and the views got better and better. It was a very nice bluebird day.

Did this a few weeks ago as our first snowshoe trip. Snow was great and had a blast! Didn’t take us more then 3 hours

Hiked it this afternoon. No signs of foot traffic anywhere above 12,000 feet made for a tough ascent and descent for that matter. Needed snowshoes above the Iowa mill.

Great for trail running

great snowshoe trail and had a moose visitor

We went when there was snow on the ground. It would have been helpful to have snow shoes or spikes, but boots were sufficient as prior hikers had packed the snow enough. The hike starts out all up hill which was pretty exhausting but the views once you get to the lake are so incredible. It is one of my most favorite hikes I’ve done. There are so many things to look at and explore around the lake. People were also camping.

The hike back to the car is super quick as it’s all downhill!

awesome trail with great views. Our boys brought sleds and had a blast sliding down the trails!

Family and I come here alot. Great for picnicking, walking, biking and there is also a couple playgrounds. Great views and a couple eagles love to hang out at this lake. Definitely no hiking, but still enjoyable.

This was one of our back up "safe" hikes (away from avalanche danger) but it ended up being more fun and scenic than we expected. The views of RMNP from the peak were amazing!
Trail was maybe 25% mud and 75% hard packed snow/ice in the forest, and then deeper snow closer to the peak. Lots of footprints made the route very clear. Microspikes were not necessary today but we did use them on the way down just to make it easy. Snow got pretty slushy later in the day. Perfect spring weather and no wind!

Sat Mar 16, 2019: access road is drivable with standard car. Parking was a little snowy but most spots were accessible. Restrooms open. Trails are snow packed; we used snowshoes but some people were just in boots (and a very few on skis). About 16” snow. Beautiful day, 36 degrees and virtually no wind. A nice easy trail, a few minimal ups and downs. A couple nice mountain views through the trees.

(July 2018) Stunnng views and quite rewarding, though pretty much a steady incline til you reach the summit - just to then see that you can actually keep going further and higher - though not on this particular path / trail - but another. Seems to connect with another one. Only saw two pairs of hikers on the way up and down with beautiful weather - though no shade.

Super snowy, but mostly packed along the loop. There were folks snowshoeing, but I did just fine in my boots. I brought my spikes with, but didn't end up needing them. A few fat tire bikes out there, and limited crowd. Gorgeous day!

Hiked this on the 17th of March and lost my keys on the trail please contact me if you find them!

Great hike though, beautiful trail especially with the snow.

Beautiful walk up to Twin Cones yesterday. No trail after about a half mile from Broome Hut. A pleasant walk up to the ridge, then the wind hits you. Snowshoes required after hut. Enjoy!

Alltrails has it wrong. This is NOT a loop trail. It is an out and back trail. It goes all the way to Genessee. There is only signage until mile 3.5. It could be considered a balloon/lollipop trail if you do the Clear Creek overlook around mile 3. Very snowy and icy for most of it yesterday. Ran with my microspikes. See Hiking Project for a better description. Beautiful, secluded trail through the trees though.

Trail was closed due to "muddy conditions"

Brought my dog out on this trail today (3/12/19). Beautiful quick hike we took in the middle of the day. I saw some people snowshoeing but I did not think they were necessary. I’m glad I brought my micro spikes for the way down, but still, they weren’t really crucial for a good experience. As long as you have good tred on your hiking boots or winter boots you will be just fine. It was quite windy up at the summit, but rest of trail was very nice with no wind at all.
