Great workout, Beautiful Trail

You can't park on the road or at the trailhead. 3/4 mile hike from the highway but nowhere to park there either...elitist region...

I'll plan to go in July next year when the wild flowers are more ample, though they were still decent today. The mile steep uphill from the river to the trailhead is no joke, but definitely the only difficult part of the hike. Lots of water to cross.

I found these directions good: Take Gothic Road (135) north past Mt. Crested Butte for 4.3 miles. Bear right past the Snodgrass Trailhead parking lot and descend into the East River Valley for another 6.5 miles past the town of Gothic until you reach the signed Rustler Gulch road. Turn right and drive this rocky road 0.2 miles to the East River (check the depth). Cross the river [0] and park on the right side, or continue driving on a steep narrow road for another mile to the TH sign. There is limited parking for 5 to 6 SUVs. Cars can make it to the East River (although the road is rough the last 0.2 miles). A high clearance SUV is recommended to cross the river and go up the steep road to the TH.

I would add that the road to the trailhead is on the right, after you pass the Washington Gulch trailhead (on the left) and soon after you go over a bridge of sorts. It's hidden by the tall grass but there is a brown sign that says "Rustler's Gulch ->" There's not much parking on the rough 0.2 mile road before the East River for cars who can't make it over but there is ample parking just before that road on Gothic Rd.

Gorgeous trail. We went last year and the wildflowers were beautiful. My husband and I hiked it. In case you are a first timer like us- do note there are a lot of bikers on the trail. With it being such a narrow trail, we had to move out of their way which became a little bit of a pain because we also had our dog, but still well worth the beautiful hike.

Amazing wildflowers & single track !

Beautiful! I definitely recommend having a four wheel drive vehicle to take you up the steep road to the trail head. If you start further down at the parking lot then the first mile is a strenuous uphill climb. There are several large streams to cross along this hike so be prepared to take off your shoes and wade through the water. We went in July. The views and wildflowers were like none other.

We started out around 8 am, choosing to hike up the mile or so road to the trailhead. The hike was amazing despite the ample water and mud everywhere. We ended up taking off our shoes two times to cross water/rivers. We thought the end of the trail was the old miner's building. Turns out we should have gone further to see the falls. Only negative was the flies everywhere. Wish we had brought bug spray.

Awesome trail. First half mile is a pretty constant climb. Wildflowers everywhere on the way up the first 2 miles. Right at about the 2 mile mark there is a stream crossing. After that there were still a few patches of snow but they are for the most part avoidable. Upon reaching the 3rd mile mark, there are spectacular views looking through Gothic Canyon with the Maroon Peaks across from you. Continuing up the trail was dry for the rest of the way until reaching the chairs overlooking Washington Gulch.

Nice views, lots of wildflowers, and lots of flies due to horse dung on the somewhat muddy trails. There are a number of options as to trails, from fairly easy to steeper. It was my first hike in Crested Butte area.

This is a great trail - not too difficult - winds through meadows and aspen and pine forest. You'll have to share parts of the trail with horses (and what they leave behind). TAKE bug spray - you'll need it in the summer. If you during wildflower season (late June - Late July) you will be amazed. Truly spectacular (especially if it was a heavy snow winter). There is another trail called Snodgrass Trail - same trail head - that branches off to the left after you cross the second set of stairs (over a barb-wire fence). Also a great trail but beware of lots and lots of mountain bikers on a very narrow and windy path. Highly recommend this in summer.

The Snodgrass trail was a great trail! We went the route listed on this app. It is a perfect mix of difficulty, got the heart rate up at times but left us with beautiful views of Aspens and Pines. We started at the trailhead and took a left at the first fork. This was was mostly uphill the entire way, which left us going downhill the second half of the loop. Took our 9 month old Boxer puppy with us and she loved it too!

Did this hike two weeks ago and there was still snow on the trail once you get into the trees. It gives you a perfect view of mount crested butte and the surrounding valley.

Trail partially under water at about .3 in from the trail head. Also lots of downed trees in the trail at about 1.4 in.

Brutally steep first mile, but evens out thereafter. Great views throughout, and nice change between forest and open areas.

Great way to see all the ecological zones of the mtn. Lots of bikes, flowers, aspens and a shallow water crossing at the bottom as a reward is a great way to end.

nice trail and not very difficult. Go past the first lake you see and there is a better lake and view at the top.

We hiked this trail in early October so all the wild flowers were gone, but the views are still spectacular.

A few take aways:

- There is a parking area past the first stream just off Gothic road. If you park below this stream, you can pass across if you head westward and look for areas to cross. The water was about 18" deep.

- The actual trailhead sign is a bit of a hike up a low maintained gravel road.

- The initial trail northward is mostly shallow creek crossings, muddy paths possibly, and some steep inclines.

- As the inward trail heads east, the hiking is actually easier but the trail turns to a single track thats pretty rocky. Regardless, the entire trail is easily Class 1 with occasional Class 2 for some hikers.

- When the waterfall comes into view in the distance, there eventually is an "unofficial" grass path that heads down to the bottom of the waterfall as a sort of shortcut from the main dirt path. Although, that also meant we missed out on seeing the old mine items.

Amazing panoramic views for a somewhat easy hike. A lot of beauty here!

About half way through this hike, I was thinking about writing a mediocre review. We pressed on and are oh so glad we did. The views at the top are stunning. Would be fabulous in the summer with the wild flowers in bloom. However, the fall colors, brisk air and no traffic on the trail made this hike fantastic.
