This is a very nice trail for an intermediate hiker or even an athletically inclined out-of-stater. I recommend completing the trail counter clockwise as it leads you to wonderful views after hiking through mellow forest. Passing a few historic buildings, you end up at a very light rock scramble that is sure to bring some fun to the hike and makes a great pit stop to take in Mt Evans and other mountain tops. I did this hike from 9am-1230 with plenty of breaks and saw about 10 people along the way. There were a lot of spots with ice that made for a dangerous hike without spikes.

Good trail. As a flatlander, I’m still adjusting to the altitude in Denver, and it was a good climb to push me, but not over do it. We used our micro spikes almost the entire hike. Not enough snow to need snow shoes. Some mild rock scrambles.

A quiet and peaceful hike. Didn't encounter anyone else the whole hike. There is still plenty of snow on most of the trail but most of it is packed down. I brought microspikes but never needed to use them.

So quiet, so serene. Only a couple inches of snow so used microspikes the whole time. I was the first human on the trail. Followed coyote tracks first mile in. Had to do some route finding but that's why I have AllTrails! Am 99% sure I was following some kitty cat tracks on the lower Horseshoe trail portion. So sang Old Macdonald pretty loudly until I saw 2 ladies on the trail. Awesome day!

Nice snowy day with light flakes. About 3 inches powder. Some icy sports. Hike up grouse them up mule to rock outcropping. Heard the highway noise a bit the whole way. Just saw 5 people and a few nice dogs. Beautiful snowy day hike. About 4 miles up and back.

Trail is in pretty good shape as of 12/7. Some areas are dry but others are very icy, I recommend traction at the least. Snowshoes probably not necessary right now but Frazer Meadow has very deep snow. Also the gate at Mountain Base Road is closed for the winter so you cannot drive all the way to the trailhead that the Mule Deer trail gps directs you to. I started at Blue Grouse and met up with Upper Mule Deer. There are several blown down trees lying across the trail, probably from the wind storm the week of Thanksgiving. They can be navigated around easily.

The front side (we started on the steep end) was very sunny - we had to take off layers as we went. The peak was stunning and views were incredible. The whole trail seemed uphill though that's obviously not possible, but the first side up was very uphill. We used microspikes/yaks. The peak required a short scramble. It was a bit windy up there but not unbearable. The other side, on the way down, was shaded, colder, and the snow was a lot deeper. We probably could've benefited from throwing on our snowshoes but made it down without them. This loop was really magical, challenging without being unenjoyable, and scenic. Recommend!

Beautiful day for the great views of the Black Bear trail but the backside was very icy. I cut through to Horseshoe trail which also had some very icy parts. Microspikes would've made this trail much more enjoyable.

Great trail, snow and ice at the beginning of horseshoe, nice meadow at the top. Bear claw had snow, a rock scramble at the top, muddy coming back down. Hiked this trail in regular hiking shoes, could have used yak traks at the start of the hike. Was there on Saturday 10/26.

Lots of trail signs, which was helpful especially in the really rocky areas going up black bear trail. Plenty of shade and extra windy today! Beautiful views of snowy mountains at the top. No bathrooms at this trailhead just as a heads up.

Completed this trail with "Blue Grouse and Mule Deer Loop". Beautiful short trail. Lost a car remote while I was hiking, if found, please bring it to the visitor center. Thank you! 10/13/2019 #51

Beautiful, 3 cars at the parking when we got to the trailhead at 9:15am. The AllTrails map was off, follow the blue trail line. Lost a car remote while I was hiking, if found, please bring it to the visitor center. Thank you! 10/13/2019 #51
