road is closed 8 miles from the trailhead 7/3/18

NOT EASY! This trail should be rated as moderate. Roughly 1300’ ascent up narrow bench cuts with loose rock and gravel making up most of the trail bed. My young kids (5 and 8) made the entire trip but it was slow going. Otherwise, great views every once in a while and great exercise. Chalk Creek was non-existent at the end of this section though.

Completed this hike on 6/14/18. This is an easy hike but has a lot of mud to navigate through. The payoff in the end is well worth it and it does not take a very long time to get to the lake. Once we got to the lake we saw a herd of elk to the south a little ways. Great Hike!

It's June 10. It was a great hike with ups and downs. Mud patches here and there but ways around and through it. Beautiful lake!

Nice hike exactly 18.1 miles outside of town. TH isn't marked and there is a paved pullout on the opposite side of the street with enough space for two cars. Early spring conditions included mud (that required wading throug) and some snow patches that you could go around. Lake is beautiful. See pics and more detail here: https://etbtravelphotography.com/2018/06/06/roadtrip-to-the-rockies-hiking-in-buena-vista/

Nice hike and good one for flatland ders still adjusting to altitude. early spring requires you to trudge through a pretty swampy and muddy section, but it is short...maybe 30 feet or so.

Very scenic and it does not take you long to experience solitude.

June 1, 2018 - nice hike, lot of patches of snow 1-2+ feet deep to slow us down, That added more work to what should have been an easy hike. All in all it was worth the scenery.

rock climbing

Usually hike, rock climb and or drive on the trails weekly. Lots of space for different activities. During the summer it can get very busy. During the winter it doesn’t get much snow so it’s good for rock climbing there almost year around.

For the adventurous...take the right fork and head up to Horn Fork Basin.
Camping is usually available right after treeline and you sit underneath Columbia and Harvard.
Probably my fave camp spot even if you don't bag the 14ers.

This is one of many trails in this area but not all of them are on alltrails.com. Some of the lakes don't even have names on maps. Remote and desolate. Amazing.

Lovely day for this lovely little hike. We had it to ourselves, feeling as if you are at the top of the world. Saw a marmot scramble up the nearby slope at great speed, nothing to do with us.

Great bike ride but no guard rails!

Awesome views at top! A very nice hike.

Nice, scenic, lots of switchbacks but great for families. My 4 year old did the whole thing. The views at the top were incredible and we saw 6 Ptarmigan and a Pika.

We drove up to Cottonwood Pass and found stunning views! We were disappointment to not be able to continue down the western side but the road improvements will be nice. Not marked is the trail to Lost Lake. Just below the Pass on the east side there is a small parking area. On the opposite side of the road is the trail head. The trek is about 1 miles with a few elevations changes but worth it! Crossing the streams may require some wet feet but the lake and views are still worth it! Take some water, lunch and maybe a fly fishing rod because you will want to soak up your time at Lost Lake.

Fantastic hike. Our three year old did 90% of it on his own so it was pretty easy and the views are unbelievable.

Took this drive recently as far as the pass from BV. The west side was closed due to upcoming road work. Great views at the top, and there was still lots of snow on the pass. Nice drive up the canyon too. I'll return some day to go all the way over to the other side.

Pretty woods. Nice climb. Not too had for someone in moderate shape. I got stopped by snow right before the top in early May.

This is my home area, great for hiking, biking, off-roading, and target shooting.

on Fourmile Area Trail

Sunday, November 20, 2016

It's a close hike through pinyons and boulders.

I hiked a portion of this trail in early October. It's a great trail to enjoy the fall foliage. Near the beginning of the trail I saw a small body of water with what appeared to be a beaver dam in the center. Then I saw two moose emerge and drink from the water! I thoroughly enjoyed this hike although I wasn't able to complete it due to time constraints.

Have done this drive twice, once as a kid with my family. Most recently in 2011 when in Gunnison area when area with boy scouts. beautiful country. Area is definately a destination.

This drive has it all: beautiful forrest, river, canyon, wildlife and the mountains. I loved it.

Plenty of fun trails to explore, some great climbs descents for new drivers. This area is open to ATVs and bikes, and has several trails specifically for dirtbikes. Amazing views of the Collegiate Peaks near Buena Vista. High clearance SUV recommended.
