beautiful peak, but tougher than expected. saw a lot of other hikes even though the weather wasn't great. I'd probably do it again though!

Note that the last section of this trail is actually part of the Fern Canyon trail. For some fantastic views, hike just a bit further than the turn-around point .... you will be glad you did!

Amazing hike with good technical areas. Go in the snow if you really want a good challenge, but to get to the peak you’ll definitely want trail spikes. Lots of trails to link onto too. definitely one to add to the books!

Beautiful trail with lots of variation in the land scape. I took it clockwise but next time I will probably do it the other way because coming back down was very steep and I’d much rather do that on the way up. On the plus side the way down had some just absolutely incredible views that I may not have appreciated had I been climbing up!

A great short hike. A little icy in places after snow.

We started this hike to the Mesa/Fern Canyon from the Shanahan Hills trailhead. Saw only a few other people/dogs on an Autumn weekday hike; always nice to feel like we have the quiet woods to ourselves! Beautiful trail — begins on a wide and easy trail and becomes more rugged. Be sure to wear hiking footwear.

NOTE: to complete the ‘Mesa loop,’ you actually need to leave the Mesa trail and get on the Fern Canyon trail. It’s gorgeous — do it! And, keep your eyes open for the ferns!

Beautiful hike! There are still some patches of snow/ice/water, but not a problem with hiking boots. Ran into just a handful of hikers and runners.

Quick intense incline off the bat makes for a great way to raise your heart rate in a short amount of time. However lots of loose rock/dirt make it a bit of challenge to get back down safely.

Trail was closed today. Hiked this before with my dog and she loved being off leash with the cows. Special dog tag for voice control needed for off leash capability.

Didn’t actually do left hand as it was closed due to mud. So did sage instead, which was also incredibly muddy.

Super easy for a Jeep, mostly just good views, there’s a couple spots along the way to pull off and check everything out.

Tough trail for beginners. Definately a good workout. This is also a very popular trail.

Lots of snow this morning! Make sure you are prepared if hiking in the snow. About half the trail I was second person then almost all of Flagstaff on the way back down was breaking trailhead. Snow ranged from 2-3" to about 8"-10" deep at points. Waterproof boots are a must. I did wear spikes but didn't really need them for the most part. Not a ton of views due to currently snowfall. But there were several spots where it was still very pretty despite minimal views. I would def do this trail again when it isn't snowing. Worth the hike for sure.

Great trail without a lot of loose rock and fairly easy footing. Steady inclines and great views made the hike really enjoyable. Parking can be a bit tough but the hike is well worth it!

This trail should not be rated as easy in my opinion.

Plan to park on the street. Hikers quickly move away from the residential area and into more natural surroundings. Maintained trail scattered with rocks, for a more rustic feel. Morning sunshine shows off the mountains the best! We saw a few people, but mostly had the trail to ourselves. Gorgeous views. Loved listening to the wind course through the Lodgepole Pines!

great hike. took the kids 3&5. I would say this is a moderate hike only if you are doing the final climb to see the cave entrance.

Awesome hike. Not overwhelming hard but tough for moderately in-shape folks. Mostly climbing steps. Gorgeous view at the top.

Great hike! 'Moderate' rating is appropriate. Signs and trails can make it a little confusing at the beginning, so following the mesa trail signs not the ncar trail signs. It's a pretty steep hike in general. 2.4 miles OUT and 2.4 miles BACK. Last 100' was too steep for our group of 2nd graders. Beautiful views amongst the flatirons. Still worth going even though we could see the cave at the top.

Trail was not super tough. I would highly recommend using spikes. I did not and was fine. Just watch where you’re stepping. Though my wife did use spikes and said she felt much more comfortable coming back down. There was an incident with a dislocated hip. Not sure if it was from a fall or whatnot, but it is better to be safe than sorry. As you get further up trail you run between dry land/rocks and icy areas. The end is def worth the hike up. Just be careful!!!

Good, easy hike - little surprised to see it was moderate. Nice views! Only negative was a good chunk of the drive up was unpaved, and it had rain/snowed so an unanticipated muddy car.

Scenic short hike!

This hike was amazing. The first half was very smooth and simple, then it turns pretty rocky for the last mile or so. The very last bit was absolutely the best part though. I saw other people posting that the last 100 feet or so was a climb, so I was expecting something along the lines of boulder hopping. Boy was i wrong! It was a legitimate climb! I would say it was about a 60ish degree angle, which was exactly what i was hoping for! Most of the trail is great for most dogs, and older kids too! I will 100% be going back!

Beautiful trail. well maintained and not much traffic on the trail today because of the cold may be. But the parking lot is full as there are lot of trails starting at the same place. I have parked on a close by street. It snowed a bit while I was there and it was beautiful

Gorgeous, nice short walk with some stairs.

trail cranked me
