Hiked on 2/16. Beautiful day and trail conditions were good. Trail was well-traveled and snow-packed, Yaktrax were helpful. A few sustained uphills got the heart pumping. Looking forward to doing this hike again! A note that in the winter, Mountain Base Road in the park is closed, which our Google directions didn't know, so it ended up taking us on a long way around the park to the trailhead- pretty drive though. On the way out the directions were more direct.

Hiked in thick snow on 2/15. Highly recommend snowshoes and getting acclimatized to altitude for a couple of days before hiking. Stunning views of the continental divide from panorama point and lots of changes in scenery. One of my current favorites!

Great area with a restroom at the beginning. Trail was clearly marked and easy to navigate. No need for snowshoes - trail was decently packed. You’ll post hole if you step off the trail though. Yak tracks would be advised due to some steep sections.

I hiked yesterday (2/13/20) and it was a beautiful day! The trail hadn’t been used in awhile it looked like, as we had to remake the trail through the deep snow with our snowshoes. But it was amazing! Peaceful trail through the woods. We were the only people it seemed. Snowshoes definitely needed right now:) Will be doing this trail again soon!

Did the hike to James peak on 2/2. Couldn’t have been a better day. Even though it wasn’t windy at Mary’s lake, it picked up once you climb elevation. Considering it’s the dead of winter I’m surprised how easy this was being almost a 14’er. Although the trail is hard to keep with so definitely download a map. I only wore micro spikes the entire way and didn’t need snowshoes. The views at the top were incredible but also shows how little snow we’ve gotten in the mountains ... climate change in effect!

Strong moderate trail with lots of good incline to get your heart rate up. Recommend traction as it’s pretty icy!!

No views, in the woods the whole time. Snow packed as of 1/25/20. Feels like an endless loop through the woods. Decent workout, but underwhelming.

Gorgeous trail I thought was fairly easy - no scrambles or technical aspects. Trail was wide, well groomed, and snow packed the entire way. Strongly recommend traction devices as it was a little slippery in the few uphill bits and snow covered the trail for the full length. We went on Sun of the MLK day weekend and saw a couple cars at the trailhead, but didn’t see anyone on the trail. It was so serene with lots of great views. It’s always great idea to call or stop at the visitors center during winter where they can give you information on trail conditions and the best route to trailheads. They advised us that Mountain Base Rd was closed. The alt route was to continue up hwy 46 to 119, then take a right at 119 and continue to Gap Rd. Take a rt on Gap Rd and then you can catch the trailhead off of Reverend’s Ridge campground or continue down a bit and catch a trailhead at Panorama pt.

I drove up yesterday 1/23/20 and Mountain Base Road was closed. Will attempt this trail at a later date. A park pass for Golden Gate costs $8/day.

Hiked this on 1/20/20 and was the only person there. Extremely icy at a few points, but beautiful! 0.8 miles in the tire tracks in the snow stopped and the snow was past my boots. Snowshoeing past this point would have been fun if I had them with me.

Sunday 1/19: Nice easy/moderate trail- started out with patches of ice...micro spikes encouraged, but my friend got around the icy areas fairly well without, just takes longer. Snow pack once up to Mule deer trail made it very easy to walk on trail. We turned around at the homestead and valley. Lots of pups.

Hiked this today. Very well marked trail, snowy&icy. Microspikes is a must. Strava said 11.1 miles with 1687ft of elevation gain.
