Beautiful wander through the fall woods.

Beautiful hike through the forest, 9/21 the trees are just about done changing, unfortunately we missed the golden aspen covered mountain most of the leaves were gone, but there was still a few left to enjoy! (Pictures posted) You hike 2 miles in to view the scenic mountain side, still worth the trek though because who doesn’t love walking through the forest. Parking lot and street parking were full, trail traffic was moderate.

Beautiful fall hike! Like others said, you have to hike maybe 2-3 miles in before you start to get views of the really spectacular solid sheets of aspens covering the hills. After Helms Lake you don't see aspen, and the trail is a little hard to follow through the bushes (willows?), but they add some nice yellow color to the beautiful mountain views. My phone and FitBit both measured 18.9 miles round trip to Abyss Lake, quite a bit longer than the 15 miles All Trails lists.

Absolutely stunning in the fall! The aspens are perfect shades of yellow right now, 9/17, and in order to see them blanket the mountainside, you need to hike about 3 miles in. Totally worth it. And it's nice and shaded all the way until it opens up...you walk through a few aspens in the trail, but holy moly, that mountainside. There's a beautiful stream, too. I've shared some pictures :)

There are a lot of aspens about midway. In full color right now.

Finally did this hike last weekend as a solo day-hike. Started the hike around 11 a.m. and and passed maybe 20 people on their way down. Had the lake all to myself once I got to the top! Abyss Lake itself is nothing overly special, but it was pretty cool to see the backside of the Sawtooth between Bierstadt and Evans. Very steady elevation gain. This is an amazing hike to do in the fall to see the foliage! The leaves were just about at peak last weekend, so I imagine this week to go if you want to see them in their prime!

Amazing fall colors today!!! Love this hike!

Trail starts off pretty grim with lots of downed trees and hiking along the road for a bit. i almost turned around after the first mile mile but glad I didnt. The aspens are nearing peak colors and you'll know when you get to the end as it's really beautiful and colorful. Loved all the water crossings. Take a picnic and lots of water. Dip your feet in once you're done! My milage counter was around 9 miles round trip.

Nice trail. Steady uphill, but it had a gentle grade throughout the whole trail. Not very many people, which was nice. The top provides great views of Rosalie Peak and Mt Evans.
Road into TH fits a single car with the exception of a few pull-offs. Parking lot fits about 10 cars.

Wonderful hike but LONG!!

Great warmup along the creek and road, then pleasant up and down hike in dense forest interspersed with Mountain meadows. Water the whole way!

short, easy, pretty hike right off 285.

Beautiful! Saw a young stag at the beginning. Loved the beautiful aspen grove midway through. If you go a little past what AllTrails mark, you can follow cairns all the way to summit. There were fallen trees on the trail, just be careful!

Was a blast a few weeks ago for an overnight backpacking trip. We ended up going to the lakes and back down to find the best campsites. Water was plentiful, the nicest campsites were towards the beginning of the hike. Enough people on the trail to not feel completely isolated but no issues getting any campsite you want. Great spot for snowshoeing as well if the road is open in winter

Incredible trail with beautiful views of high mountain cliffs, aspens, and an alpine lake (or two). My 11 year old cousin and I backpacked in a couple miles, set up camp, then hiked to Helms Lake and back. Excellent choice for a one or two nighter.

Great hike. Beautiful 360 degree views

Beautiful hike and perfect for dogs. With parking about 2 miles from the trailhead, the hike is over 9 miles. So nice to hike along the creek and you cross over about 10 times.

Really loved this trail. It was 60 and breezy and beautiful. We went on August 19, 2018. Saw a few people but very peaceful and lovely. Loved walking next to the creek the whole way!!

Backpacked in to Helms lake 8/6 - 8/7. A bit marshy getting around helms lake but the trail was in good condition and relatively easy to follow otherwise. Lost a blue nalgene somewhere in the helms lake area.

Awesome trail with dispersed camping spots easy to find. Light elevation gain for first 2.5 miles and then it increases significantly thereafter. Excellent camping right after the first creek crossing at 2 miles in. There are flattened logs to walk across so no getting wet during the creek crossings. We went further and camped just short of Helms Lake (5.25 miles in) in the tree-covered area. Wonderful views and a few dispersed campsites easy to find.

Great Hike , close to Denver .
loved hiking next to creek all throughout the time.

great cascades, beaver ponds, flowers, birds, meadows

Nice quiet hike along a creek. Opens into a meadow with nice views. Then the trail continues through a large aspen grove. We went about 2.5 miles and had to turn around due to the time.

Lots of shade, which was perfect for our pug who we brought along. We went just about 2 miles then turned around. The sound of water below was awesome and the view when you get to the open field is beautiful. We arrived at 830am in a Sunday and there were only 2 other cars in the lot. By the time we made our way back we ran into a few small groups of people and the parking lot was full (it is a small parking lot though). I’d suggest getting there early at or before 8 on a weekend if you are looking to be one of the only ones on the trail. But it did not feel overly crowded like some other hikes in the state. It was perfect!

Average hike. River and stream. Hot in July.

This trail was great. Lots of shade, you walk along the water, great for dogs. The wildflowers are in full bloom. Make sure to get there early as parking fills up. There is no trash service at the trailhead. Lots of backcountry spots along the trail.

Great trail, beautiful scenery with ample camping. We wanted to camp up at Helms lake but it was extremely buggy so made our way back down. It wasn't an overly crowded trail and finding camping was pretty easy.
