Hunter Creek Trail is not a loop! The actual Hunter Creek Trail is out and back. In order to make a loop you turn off to multiple other trails and even include hiking on paved road. Silly to call this hike a loop. The actual Hunter Creek Trail is worth hiking..beautiful rushing stream..rocky, inclined hike.

Awesome trail through every aspect of a mountain! Aspen groves, forest, meadows, rock slides. Hiked from the Maroon Bells down beside the Maroon Creek, took less than 1.5 hours. Beautiful!

The first part of the hike was shaded but then after a while it got pretty hot. Also at the end we had some trouble finding the trail. Over all we thought the hike was fun for our family.

Very long a lot of ups and downs but the lakes are pretty!!!

Absolutely gorgeous view but it was pretty steep and I would call it more hard then moderate

We hiked to both lakes a few days ago and this hike was one of the best hikes we've ever been on. We were there on a weekday and saw only one group of people the entire day. We fished at both lakes, but didn't catch anything - there's definitely fish in there but they're very smart. The hike starts at 11,200 and the second lake is at 12,300 so be prepared to be short of breath. We live at less than 700 ft so we were sucking wind the entire time. The hike from Anderson to Petroleum lakes is more strenuous than the first section of the hike. But it's all very worth it!
The first part of the drive from the main road can be done without 4x4, but the last 3.5 miles from the campground to the trailhead pretty much requires 4x4 and decent clearance. That being said, it's an easy 4x4 trail, not too difficult for inexperienced offroaders.
Between the two lakes is a small meadow full of beautiful wildflowers. The lakes, flowers, and views were all so gorgeous. Would definitely recommend this hike.
P.S. - there's two ponds in between the lakes. Don't stop there, but continue up to the left to reach Petroleum lake.

Hiked to both lakes today. Beautiful hike with abundant wildflowers. Also several small waterfalls along the way. A moderate hike and definitely a favorite. An hour and a half drive from Aspen to the trailhead. So worth it. Highly recommend

We did the drive from Aspen to Created Butte on this Jeep trail.. The scenery was a beautiful and the Jeep trail was great. There were some big rocks and narrow spots but overall a great drive. You’d need a 4x4 to do it because of the rocks and other obstacles. I did it in a 2018 Jeep Wrangler and it was effortless for it. There was a guy that came up in an older Montero and he did just fine. I think he’s done it before and has some experience though.

Take the kids. Have a picnic. Get in the water. It’s cold, refreshing, and the kids will love it! Prepare to be bounced around.

heavily trafficked and a lot of road.

This was one of THE most beautiful hikes I’ve been on in Colorado! Anderson lake which is the first lake is the turquoise colored lake. You hike past a few more to get to petroleum which is a deep blue. You have to take a 4x4 road off of independence pass to get here. It’s very rocky and it took about 45min-1hr to drive it in my RAV4. Worth it!

Excellent hike. We did it clockwise in the afternoon, which was great because the first part is then in the shade, and you can see the sunset from the road on the way down. Recommended!

Hiked up to Maroon Bells, it’s a nice gradual incline and goes through some aspens so there is some nice shaded areas. It’s also follows Maroon creek which is nice to hear while hiking. There are some areas that you go through rocky pastures, it was an excellent hike that I would do again!

Flowers are beautiful right now. Great trail, has it all, technical single track, steep grades, shade, sun, perfect training trail.

The trail is the summer road for trucks up the mountain. It isn’t as steep as the Ute trail or other trails up, but we didn’t get a lot of shade and felt challenging for us novices as most of it is at 15-30% grade except for a somewhat flat portion for 0.5 miles or so. The nice part is the gondola ride down is free, and dogs are allowed (we brought our 8 month old German Shepard puppy who didn’t seem to have an issue).

Love this trail as a warm up hike when getting to Aspen and getting acclimated. It is a great cardio workout with a moderate incline and an easy run down into town.

Nice trail; nice views; long climbs. Last part was kinda weak, walked a long ways down a road.

Did this loop after a good 4-6 inch snow accumulation over night. First tracks around 9 am were fine trudging through with beautiful snow covered trees and babbling streams. Took smuggler coming down with great snowy views of the valley below. Got a bit muddier as it got warmer. Great trail and loop! Wubba lubba dub dub!

We went to hike this, but the road was still closed for the winter about 6 miles from the trailhead. We ended up taking a snowmobile tour out of Lazy T Ranch up to Maroon Bells Lake which was fabulous.

My hike was mid-March and starting after taking the gondola to the top of Ajax ($35). I had planned on running about half but between the altitude and loosely packed snow it proved more difficult than planned. I still ran most of the downhills and had a great time. Over a couple hours I only saw two on snowmobiles and one cross country skier. Beautiful views and highly enjoyable!

Due to lack of snow, you have to watch out for ice patches in some sections, hiking poles were helpful. Absolutely gorgeous hike/scenery with mixture if moderate and easy hiking.

Great trail for the inexperienced but still excited for a workout. Beautiful view with easy cut backs. Good for groups

Very easy community trail - this is not a wilderness hike.

Loved this place!! A man jogging e a three legged dog passed me so no one has an excuse to not get out there!

For the sea level dwellers, this is a hard hike! The terrain is easy to traverse however the elevation presents some difficulty. All in all take your time, the view is worth the breathlessness!

Not technically hard, but climbing straight up the side of a ski area isn't exactly easy either, especially at 8000 feet. The views were totally worth it though. We went the first weekend in October so the foliage was perfect

Great View of town! Hike was moderate and not overcrowded

We loved the pretty views on this trail! Very rocky on the first half of the trail, so proper footwear is a must!
