The trail is the summer road for trucks up the mountain. It isn’t as steep as the Ute trail or other trails up, but we didn’t get a lot of shade and felt challenging for us novices as most of it is at 15-30% grade except for a somewhat flat portion for 0.5 miles or so. The nice part is the gondola ride down is free, and dogs are allowed (we brought our 8 month old German Shepard puppy who didn’t seem to have an issue).

Love this trail as a warm up hike when getting to Aspen and getting acclimated. It is a great cardio workout with a moderate incline and an easy run down into town.

Nice trail; nice views; long climbs. Last part was kinda weak, walked a long ways down a road.

Did this loop after a good 4-6 inch snow accumulation over night. First tracks around 9 am were fine trudging through with beautiful snow covered trees and babbling streams. Took smuggler coming down with great snowy views of the valley below. Got a bit muddier as it got warmer. Great trail and loop! Wubba lubba dub dub!

We went to hike this, but the road was still closed for the winter about 6 miles from the trailhead. We ended up taking a snowmobile tour out of Lazy T Ranch up to Maroon Bells Lake which was fabulous.

My hike was mid-March and starting after taking the gondola to the top of Ajax ($35). I had planned on running about half but between the altitude and loosely packed snow it proved more difficult than planned. I still ran most of the downhills and had a great time. Over a couple hours I only saw two on snowmobiles and one cross country skier. Beautiful views and highly enjoyable!

Due to lack of snow, you have to watch out for ice patches in some sections, hiking poles were helpful. Absolutely gorgeous hike/scenery with mixture if moderate and easy hiking.

Great trail for the inexperienced but still excited for a workout. Beautiful view with easy cut backs. Good for groups

Very easy community trail - this is not a wilderness hike.

Loved this place!! A man jogging e a three legged dog passed me so no one has an excuse to not get out there!

For the sea level dwellers, this is a hard hike! The terrain is easy to traverse however the elevation presents some difficulty. All in all take your time, the view is worth the breathlessness!

Not technically hard, but climbing straight up the side of a ski area isn't exactly easy either, especially at 8000 feet. The views were totally worth it though. We went the first weekend in October so the foliage was perfect

Great View of town! Hike was moderate and not overcrowded

We loved the pretty views on this trail! Very rocky on the first half of the trail, so proper footwear is a must!

We actually went up Cooper Creek Road which is the left fork at the end of Castle Creek Road (Pearl Pass goes off to the right.) Beautiful Sunday afternoon stroll. The old mining road is closed to motorized vehicles but open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. It's in good condition and takes a gradual uphill grade for 5+ miles, at which point it gets much steeper as it climbs to the mine. There used to be a gate with a no trespassing sign at the base of the steep climb to the mine but if it still exists, we didn't make it that far. It snowed yesterday so the fall colors highlighted by the snow were spectacular. Other than two other parties at the beginning of our hike who we left behind quickly, we were alone for the entire time until we got back close to the parking lot. Expansive views with tons of photo opportunities.

Beautiful aspen turning on mostly smooth rounded peaks. nice smooth road, a few technical parts, we turned around before the actual pass tho (which is more difficult with a shale shelf road). few minor water crossings. panoramic views and gorgeous scenery abounds. Minor traffic, mostly motorcycles and bikes.

This was a fun trail! I didn't complete it due to not carrying water and wanted to keep my run short. Definitely rocky in some areas. But can't wait to come back and do the entire trail probably hiking. This was my first trial run and the altitude kicked my butt!

Up Hunter Creek was a delight for an urban community. There were boardwalks where wetlands needed protection and several bridges crossing the creek. Heavy use speaks well of the community's commitment to to outdoor activities. Coming down Smugglers Road was not very exciting. The bottom of the route was not well marked back to the trailhead.

So today we hiked out Richmond Ridge again. This long hike connected the Richmond Hill trail off the top of Aspen Mountain to Express Creek, off of Castle Creek Road in the Castle Creek Valley near Ashcroft. If All Trails let me search trails to select, I'd tag it to Express Creek. This 15.5 mile hike involves a car shuttle (don't forget your keys like we did) and should be done while the Aspen Mountain gondola is running unless you want to add on the 3+ mile hike up Ajax. Richmond Ridge or Richmond Hill Road involves a fair amount of up and down and is mostly in pine forest for the first third of the hike. But when you get to the views, oh the views! There is some serious climbing as you pass the Barnard and Goodwin Greene huts but it's so spectacular you almost don't mind. Then the descent down Express Creek. Be sure to turn off the main road and follow the old road down which is now closed to all but hikers and horses to skip another epic climb. Two drawbacks of the hike are having to share a lot of the hike with ATV vehicles, dirt bikes and jeeps and the fact that after so many miles, the hike down to the Express Creek trailhead feels like it's never going to end. But the views make the distance worth it.

Easily accessible from downtown Aspen. Head up hunter Valley first, then down Smuggler for about a ~4 mile alt. Route that finished right down Aspen with great views of Aspen mountain at the end for your reward

Great and beautiful hike. Easily accessible from Aspen town. Went up smuggler in the hot sun with two kids (10 and 12) which was difficult but the rest was very enjoyable.

Nice 8.9 mile out and back on Richmond Ridge from the Sundeck. Since we got a late start and we wanted to catch the last gondola down, we went as far as we had time for. Lots of meandering up and down mostly in forest but with views here and there. The trail is a road so you'll be sharing it with dirt bikers, four wheelers, and mountain bikers. (If only All Trails didn't make it too easy to accidentally delete a recording.)

Nice steady hike, great views of Castle Creek from the top

This is a really nice hike. It can't be beat for convenience as it starts right in town and immediately ascends up along a forested creek. The initial ascent is steep but the climb is much more gradual once the trail reaches the valley floor. It then winds through meadows interspersed with aspen and pine groves. The views both upvalley and downvalley are expansive and mountainous. I did it as an out and back, going all the way to the end of the 1992 trail.

The trail was very nice and scenic for the first .6 of a mile from Maroon Lake. Once the trail (1982) mets up with 1983 then there is a lot of horse traffic and droppings to navigate. The hike is easy and very doable with the right foot gear.

Only walked down the trail...the 3.5 miles...one star is for the first part of the trail that was scenic...before we hit the rock hillside that hurt our feet so bad even with hiking shoes...then the next 3 miles were completely muddy and covered with horse poop with no scenery far away from the water...horrible hike...
