Rigorous uphill climb no reprieve but the views are beautiful.. do not forget to climb down from top to view the falls. This trail is very rocky with lots of rocks ... so adding to the degree of difficulty to the steep gradient throughout . start the hike early as the heat in summer and even late spring gets you..Parking is an issue so get dropped off or take the early park bus and get dropped off.. It is hard hike up... Round trip back s close to 7.8 Miles not 5

This is my first time going to Nevada falls. I've done the Vernal Falls part of the trail multiple times. I loved making the entire loop. It was a beautiful hike that I can't wait to do again.

Up up and away. Phenomenal views of the valley throughout most of the vertical hike. With a pack it was pretty grueling, but everyone made it with 3 liters of water each. Everyone was quick to refill at the top and chug once it was ready. The dip in the river was extremely rewarding. Well worth the effort for the views. A very busy trail with a lot of day hikers, but that’s the valley so nothing out of the ordinary there.

Did this trail as part of a backpacking overnight to Eagle Peak. This is a rough trail to do with packs because there is so much elevation gain in a relatively short time period, but the views are beautiful!! We started on the trail at 4pm (8pm sunset in July) and it was really nice to be in the shade for most of the way. Definitely would recommend this as an afternoon hike to avoid sun on the trail.

Parking was very difficult, as can be expected for Yosemite Valley in the summer.

First time to Yosemite and First hiking trail...I loved it great work out..

very difficult hike, rocks very brutal on feet, ankles, and knees! recommend hiking poles, ankles hiking boots. views are great! bring at least 2 liters of water, and snacks!

Holy incline! But holy views! Love it! Went in May and not very crowded so I enjoyed myself.

we just finish the trail in vernal waterfall, it's so beautiful there and I will give 5 stars for the trail!

Possibly my favorite hike in the world!

Honestly...the view of the falls is best at the "halfway" point. The "pool" or streams at the top were refreshing but holy moley the elevation gain destroyed me at the end. I guess I had a different experience because I am 5' 11" and over 250 lbs. Coming down one of my knees started to give out so I'd recommend braces for whatever joints you have issues with (i.e knees, ankles, etc). PLEASE TRAIN FOR THIS HIKE IF YOU ARE OUT OF SHAPE, YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T. Also be sure to have hiking shoes if you need the extra grip (I definitely did).

Great warm-up hike to start your day. Do this hike every day of your visit to get the juices flowing.

Family hike in mid June...on a Wednesday. Got to the trail head parking lot around 8am and there were still a few parking spots left. Much later and we would have ended up at the Yosemite Village lot.

You’re looking at this hike because you know how amazing the waterfalls are so I’m not going to comment on that other than it’s definitely worth going all the way up to the to of Nevada Falls.

We followed the Mist Trail up to the top of Nevada Falls. There was plenty of people on the trail but It wasn’t crowded that time of day. The steps heading up to Vernal were very wet (from the mist). It took about 3 hours to get to the top of Nevada...we were hiking with our 11 year old twins and 8 year old daughter. It was tough for the 8 year old but she made it with minimal complaints. We had lunch at the top and then decided to take John Muir trail back down...HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!! Looking at a trail map it added about a mile on to the hike vice going back the way we came, but it avoided having to go down the wet stairs and going against the traffic coming up. I’m positive it was faster then heading back the way we came. The John Muir trail joins the Mist Trail about 0.5 miles below Vernal Falls. Once we got back on the Mist Trail (now about 1pm) it was very crowded.
If you are concerned about the wet steps or step switch back you can take the John Muir trail up as well, but you will miss Vernal Falls and some great views along the Mist Trail.

Wonderful views of the whole valley a very good scenic hike. The trail it self is hard if you don’t like climbing stairs this trail is not for but if you power thru it it is worth the soreness. Start the hike early to avoid the heat not much shade from the sun and bring plenty of water no stops for water. Ended up finishing up at Yosemite point

More than 200 floors! That's what my device said. Yes, this is hard to strenuous. It was not the latter for me coz I started the trek in the early morning 4 AM and ended by 10 AM. People starting after the sunrise will have to face the sun while climbing up. The falls were powerful given it was spring and there was a lot of ice left on the top. The wind is too too cold and you instantly cool down when you reach the top. Please carry a thermal jacket for just the summit. Carry plenty of water and snacks. My recommendation is this : Go to Yosemite early morning on Saturday and reach there before 8 AM. Stand in the queue of Camp 4 if you dnt have reservation and get a place. Setup your tent and start to hike at around 10. Reach the base camp by 4 or 5 PM. Rest of the entire night and head back to home the next day. This has always worked for me during the weekend getaway including peak hours.

Beautiful views. Weather changes in a blink of an eye and more and more mist as you’re getting closer to the waterfalls

This trail was quite the experience. It was difficult but I loved the challenge. The views were amazing and worth every step.

Best hike ever! Took misty rail up to vernal falls and it was very crowded all day. Make sure you go early to avoid the crowd.

Finished this hike in about 5 hours with lots of stopping and admiring the waterfalls. I was very thankful we only went up the Mist trail since the stairs seemed somewhat precarious/slippery to go down. If you’re inclined to spend more time on this hike, bring a swim suit! There are great pools both at Vernal and Navada falls, but of course be extremely careful of the strong currents. Both falls were really beautiful, but if you had to do only one, Vernal is really impressive and beautiful. Luckily it’s also an easier hike :) I did this hike 5 month pregnant and did fine. There were also several kids doing this hike. If you’re in reasonably good shape, it’s very doable. Give yourself the day, plenty of breaks and water, and you’ll see some of the best of what Yosemite has to offer!

Long hike! Great trail. Amazing views! Definitely swim in the upper falls pools. Take the Yosemite point trail for a view of the north dome and a great panoramic it’s an extra 40 minutes round trip.

Strenuous but worth the breathtaking views!

Beautiful hike! From the valley floor to Vernal is harder than Vernal to Nevada. I enjoy using the JMT to avoid the stairs on the mist trail, especially coming down. This is a popular trail and you will be around a lot of people.

Great hike. Didn’t take as long as I expected. Take lots of water because several of the switchbacks are in the sun. I went 7 and made it up in 3 hours and I am not a super fast hiker. Extended my hike on to Yosemite Point. Worth every step.

Awesome hike! Totally worth climbing all the way to the top of Nevada fall.

Have hiked a lot of Yosemite over the years and of course there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The low rating on this trail is all about the relentless down on a decaying trail to mirror lake. If you want to check out North Dome from the valley floor I highly recommend going back the same route you can up via upper Yosemite trail.

Awesome views but bring good shoes because the path is filled with slippery rocks (very early to slip or roll an ankle)! Also would recommend an early hike and getting back down to the floor before the trail gets to warm.

Really fantastic trails are kept up lots of wildlife beautiful views a little hot quite a few people but you can’t beat it !!! The falls are magnificent an absolute must see

We hiked up to Vernal Falls via mist trail and then over and down the John Muir Trail. Recommend this route if your not going any further.

We went early morning and would highly recommend as on the way down was VERY crowded.

Amazing views / don’t forget to stop and look around as every turn is spectacular.

I found the first portion of this hike from trail head to bridge to be the most difficult. I enjoyed the steps up to the falls and loved the views looking back from the John Muir trail.

Beautiful hike to warm up before hitting up Halfdome. We started from Taft Point and went clockwise to Sentinel Dome.

Bring water, bring food. Leave at the crack of dawn or else the sun will bear down on you by 11. Squirrels are fatter on top than on the trail... don’t feed them.

This is such a beautiful trail and it’s the one that started me on a hiking craze! The stairs were very doable, and if you work out a few times a week you’ll be completely fine! The views are so pretty going up the trail and it’s a huge sense of accomplishment climbing up the waterfall! We climbed up to the base of Nevada falls and then backtracked to the John Muir and took that route down due to time constraints. It’s worth noting that it is quite a bit more climbing up steps to reach the John Muir trail from above Vernal Falls, however I’d still recommend that route rather than going back down the steep steps of the most trail. Can’t wait to complete the entire trail up to the top of Nevada falls one day!
