It’s a nice trail with some hard-to-find cover along the way. There are great views at Eagle Rock and more trails to extend your hike. However, California’s drought has left so many of these trails dry and burnt. It is depressing to witness and should cause us all to give pause when driving our SUVs to these trailheads.

Hikenites.la and skyhighhiking follow for weekly night hikes around La. We hiked on 7/9 around 11:30pm. Small group of 7, really nice trail, glimpse of many terrains, easy ascend to the top. Nice views all around. Hiked down the fire road. Easier but not much to enjoy. Really nice weather since its been really hot during the day. Saw some deer by where we parked. No mountain lion sightings. Safe all around.

Great moderate trail that goes through some brush and trees with a great reward at the top of a fantastic view of the Valley on one side and the ocean on the other side. I would do it again!

This was one of the more scenic hikes I’ve done in LA. The views (on a clear day) are amazing and once you hit the peak you get a nice [reward] panoramic view of the shoreline and cityscape. I clocked in 7 miles from start to finish on this one. I would rate this as an easy to moderate hike. It’s an incline for most of the way up (not TOO steep but does give you a workout) but there are many parts of level ground. What makes it a bit more strenuous is the distance. The trail is exposed so bring hats, wear sunscreen and bring water. I went around 2pm and ran into hikers/bikers maybe every quarter mile or so, not too busy. Saw people coming up to the overlook point from different trails so assuming many other trails lead to this peak.

Nice wooded trail, the walk was very enjoyable with the sound of birds along the way, I did this hike on May 19 and the weather was perfect.

Great trail, beautiful views! Would put this towards more moderate but well worth it. We got there early, 8.30am Saturday morning and were only a couple of other people around. Got a lot busier on the way back around 11am.

Beautiful hike. Single trail heading up with plenty of shade. Great views so take your time and look around. The caves at Eagle Rock are neat. We arrived at 8:30am on a Saturday and paid $10 for parking. Parking was wide open. When we returned around 12pm the parking was very full. Bathrooms are very clean.

One of my favorite hikes in L.A. if you want to make this hike more challenging, there is an alternate route that will turn this into a 5 mile loop. From the main entrance on los liones, go left and down to cross the concrete. Follow the trail and about 50 meters in you will see another trail on your left that goes up the steep hillside. From there it is 1.4 miles to parker mesa overlook but be warned it is quite steep. You will gain 1300 feet in 1.4 miles, expect to cover this distance in 45 minutes to an hour depending on how many breaks you take. Shoes with good traction are recommended. I take this way up and the regular easy way down to make it a loop, going back this way is not recommended as it is quite steep.

Challenging but runnable climb, maybe not quite as exciting for hiking but I would still hike it. Part of the the backbone trail that runs across all the SM mountains so I’m glad I know it. Also be sure to continue at least to the fire overlook by making a right at the top of Hondo, behind the old radar tower, it’s a beautiful view.

Arrived at the trailhead at 815am and was able to snag a free parking spot on the road. Took the fire road up as it was before the sun got too hot. Little coverage, but beautiful views. Eagle Rock was empty, only one other gal at the top. Make sure you sign the journal in the ‘cave’! Took the Musch Trail down, which was only single track and quite overgrown. Only saw a few places with horse poop. Not too many people at all. Overall the trail was great, I would do it again. But where were the ocean views????

A moderate hike, mostly uphill. Try to start in the afternoon after the fog is lifted otherwise you won't get much of a view.

Beautiful views, I would do this trail again.

Im a big fan of this hike and of Topanga State park! The whole area is neat, but Eagle rock is the crowned jewel with it's caves and panaramic views. I prefer taking the Fire road (best views) to eagle rock, but Musch trail is nice too, and a good change of scenery.

Loved it. If you take the left side first you get a beautiful view of the ocean at the top.

Really pretty drive and views! Gets pretty windy so make sure to bring a jacket. Definitely a good idea to have the exact $5 for parking, and a pen! This was a great escape from the city

The views are fantastic!! Good calorie burner too

Pretty boring. Goes through a lot a shaded scrub. Go to Trippet Ranch right nearby instead

This is a moderately difficult hike. Steep up hill and down. Beautiful views are your reward.

We loved the varying scenery of this hike and the step incline at the end to make it a true workout. Perfect length for a Sunday morning hike and just wish I knew it was a $5 parking fee so we could have had exact change. Don’t be fooled by the dirt one way road, there is a nice parking lot once you get to the end.

Beautiful hike with some nice little shady spot along the trail. We explored the caves just over the lip of Eagle Rock and found a cozy nook to laze in for a while.

Great hike. Beautiful views. Not exactly easy though.

It was a bit confusing to find the starting point, but once we got on the trail it’s pretty smooth hike.

great hike. lots of shade, the rock is cool. would have been a 5 but some track was a little overgrown.

Lovely and shaded for a lot of it and you’re rewarded with a gorgeous view in all directions! Convenient parking and clean bathroom facilities in the lot were also nice perks. Would definitely do this again!
