Last weekend (7/7-7/8) backpacked from the Bayview Trailhead to Middle Velma for the night. Great hike! Definitely a steep incline going up, but beautiful views and flowers along the way. Be sure to stop at the lookout halfway up the initial incline for a stunning view of Emerald Bay. We took a detour to Dick’s Lake (not on this map), then continued on to Middle Velma to camp. Once we got to Middle Velma, we had a beautiful view, great swimming, and a warm evening. Bugs didn’t come out until sunset. Beautiful hike back down— recommend poles. Definitely a great weekend trip!

This trail is excellent.. We are not expert hikers neither do we hike often but it very doable. It starts off with a climb up so don’t take off at great speed pace yourself.. My husband has a bad knee but was able to do the whole hike., he did wear a strap. The views are wonderful. It was a Friday morning we started off at 10.30am got to Emerald bay for lunch walked up to Eagle Falls just behind the beach and we returned back to DLBliss at 5.30 pm after a short stop to dip our feet in the lake. I would highly recommend this hike....it is arduous and probably longer than I anticipated when we set out but so worth it. A great day.

This trail is really easy for an active person. The terrain is flat and easy to walk on and the trail is very obviously marked. There are restrooms available as well which is nice. Love the water at the bottom and the short walk up to eagle falls!

This is definitely doable in regular running shoes and great for kids. I did this with my son when he was 3 years old and again 5 years later.

I came from the PCT heading north to Bayview Trail just past Upper Velma Lake... I assumed It was going to be an easy way to get back to a Parking area where I could take the Trolley back into town. I was completely Wrong!! The scenery is absolutely beautiful, so i hope this review helps.. I thought the trail would be well marked and a bit easier than it was... Once I began to take the trail I couldn't believe how hard it was to follow. After a long day of hiking this was away more challenging exit point than I wanted. I lost the trail a few times and then luckily picked it up again. My phone GPS didn't work here. Thank goodness I had my poles to cross the river. I assumed all of this trail would be clearly marked aka a more Tahoe family friendly route. I left the bayview trail to Eagle Lake trail where there is a posted sign, but if I had wanted to follow the bayview trail all the way down...I am not sure were I would of even gone at that point. Make sure you have a good understanding of the trail before you leave your start point. Happy Hiking!

Great moderate 2.5-3hr hike, the lake was full and lillies were in bloom! Be sure to go to the very end as there is a beautiful open field of flowers leading to the lake.

Loved this trail! Took the Lighthouse Trail to start which is the steeper way. You can access the Rubicon from the lighthouse parking area. Gorgeous views! Great way to really get a sense of the area. Do not believe the signs that say parking is full. You can park in the lighthouse area most likely.

Easy hike but worth the trip to see the beautiful Vikingsholm at the bottom.

Loved it. Was kinda hard for me but I’m out of shape. Did this in 2015.

Easy loop trail. Wide, flat road. Watch for bears in this area.

Really nice trail. There is a paved trail that leads out to this trail that starts Sugar Pine area that you can bring leashes dogs on.

Beautiful views, but not for the person with bad knees

Easy paved hike with amazing and iconic view of Emerald Bay. Relatively steep uphill to return to starting point.

We were a group of 11 people - ages range from 10 to 58 and everybody had a great time. Very doable. Spectacular views and well kept trail. Congested towards Vikingsholm but otherwise a great hike.

A fun little hike. First your hike down which is easy. Then you hike back up. Beautiful lakeside views at the bottom along with the castle. The uphill is definitely difficult but relatively short. I would say it's a moderate hike. I saw a lot of children and older people doing it just at a slower pace. More can be found on my blog (https://www.brisul.com/blog/2017/6/22/vikingsholmtrail)

Nice easy trail to walk on. The incline is steep coming back up but the path is smooth.

Vikingsholm is a joy to descend. The level of enjoyment of the ascension is dependent on how much cardio you do. In all seriousness this trail contains some spectacular views and the house at the bottom is truly unique. As with other trails in the area parking is a premium so arrive early or expect to drive around waiting for a spot.

Did this hike 5-3-18 hardly anyone there. I did get there early around 9:30 am plenty of parking. I parked a bit up the road to avoid the 10 dollar fee. This hike was not as hard as it was stated or sounding. Granted I do hike some what frequently the incline was not really that bad at all. Made it back up pretty quick and there are plenty of places to rest should you need it. When you get to the bottom you can access the water which is nice. Never saw the house or whatever I was on a time constraint and wanted to enjoy the water and views. Great little hike early enough in the season I was basically alone the whole time. More people and the parking lot was pretty full by noon.

Fantastic and unique landmark!!! Loved seeing the architecture and beach views and the island!! Also had immediate access to Eagle falls and the Rubicon trail!!!

Beautiful hike. We went during the week, and the trails were nearly clear. Mild to moderate intensity, but amazing views. Saw a lot of wildlife Just past Emerald Bay. We plan on coming back to hike the rest of the lake.

Great weather when we visited, great views of emerald lake
Going back up is steep

Amazing views once you get to Rubicon and head towards Emerald Bay. Bit slippery in parts with the snow so make sure to wear appropriate shoes.

It was a great hike today not much snow!

Great trip,
Limited parking, a must see castle! Thanks

I was huffing and puffing on my way back up (I blame it on the altitude) but it was worth the views!! Lots of kids, being carried, and plenty of dogs.

Spectacular view with fresh water coming right out of the mountain

Beautiful views of Emerald Bay! My husband and I were able to complete it with our 2.5 year old in his pack and our 2 month old in my front carrier. It was a little tougher on the way up because it’s pretty steep, but definitely doable. You can continue on the trail down to emerald bay and see Vikingsholm castle. We brought lunch and ate at one of the picnic tables. Vikingsholm is only open to tour in the summer, but it’s still beautiful to see.

Hiking down pavement isn't my forte- lots of non hikers on this one. The view and being right on Lake Tahoe is awesome and gets you right up to the shoreline. We continued to Emerald point which is more of a trail with minimal elevation change. Back tracked up to parking lot. The elevation going back up to the parking lot is the challenge and can get you out of breath if your not physically fit.

Beautiful views of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, and Vikingsholm. Easy hike down; slightly more strenuous going back up, but well worth it!

This hike is one of my favorites on the West Shore! During the off-season, the trail is clear and you are able to really enjoy the spectacular views. I have done this hike a few other times, in the summer, and it's a mess with all the tourists.
Note: they are doing controlled burning at DL Bliss right now, so you have to park at the top lot and walk down. That alone tacks on an extra mile or so.
